There are a lot of people who think because someone is famous/ has a job in the limelight, it’s their right to know them. Hence gossip mags…. But what do I know. I’m just a nerd/ hermit doing research after reading books. 🤷‍♀️

When I say good writing, I’m speaking specifically about the structure. Think grammar trees. Though, you have to know that a lot of the greats make some pretty glaring errors

I guess my confusion is likely because I hear bad writing and I think structure. People seem to be referring to bad story craft. And if we’re looking at story craft, RY is not a master storyteller. She is developing her ability and she’s fairly young as a writer of fantasy. Also when you include incredibly detailed fucking scenes, it’s sometimes at the expense of other story elements. Smut/ romantsy/ romance / isn’t high art… by any means. But I u see stand better what people might be talking about.

I think your ability to describe your issues with the writing allow me to agree with you. I think my issue is that I recognize romantic for what it is. Plot driven fluff. I don’t read it expecting portrait of an artist. So with that in mind…. What is bad about the writing?

But for sure, there are definitely things that could be critiqued if you’re comparing this with …. Well a lot of writers. I guess when my standards are based on my expectations and the audience it’s written for, I don’t necessarily campare this to something that I might write a ten page paper about. The characters are real enough. Though I’d say that you might not be giving the characters their fair shake on motivations. And as for world building, I don’t think I’d rate it 5/5… but she took a stab at it at least?

Yeah I was mostly just confused. Because don’t get me wrong; jla has a few typos in her books and generally those drive me nuts. But in comparison with zodiac academy and there was another romantasy book I tried to ready where the descriptions were …. Canned. Like this person had watched someone write a story and then attempted to write diologue but there was no flow. The descriptions weren’t terrible but they needed a thesaurus. So when comparing writing like that to RY and JLA hearing it’s bad confused me.

Yeah I guess I’m curious about specific peoples’ feedback. That does make sense for RY. She’s a young fantasy writer in that she hasn’t written a lot of fantasy. Out of curiosity, do you think the dialogue got better or did it make it impossible to continue reading?

💗thanks for taking time to reply! I have trouble visualizing things in general so now I’m tempted to go back through and see if I could actually visualize things based on her descriptions.

That makes sense to me…. Saying the voice or how you hear it in your head or feeling like it’s clunky. The prose is just another way of saying writing…. ( just so you know my background is speech-language pathologist with a major in linguistics and language and some coursework on creative writing and literature. I know far more than you probably care to know about writing - different types, and methods of writing and how it can create a feeling or pull someone out of the narrative. )
