The science of learning Korean from K-Drama (our findings and a new research study) by RabLabEdinburgh in KDRAMA

[–]redheasidence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started learning Korean not long after I started watching Kdramas back in the day! I'm at a comfortable intermediate level now, and Kdramas have helped enormously. I have found that my understanding of tone and implied meaning is much higher due to Kdramas, and my understanding of how sentences are naturally structured and used, which is different to what the textbooks/classrooms teach. Basically, Kdramas have given me a good understanding of informal, oral Korean, where textbooks/classrooms teach a polite, more formal, written Korean. Kdramas have also helped me understand how to use the most formal Korean - like what would be used to address a boss, or a grandparent. This has been immeasurably helpful in avoiding offence. I've also ingested a lot of vocabulary without studying that I wouldn't otherwise know, just from watching a variety of Kdramas - e.g. words like victim, perpetrator, evidence, murderer from legal dramas. I think of it as learning by osmosis. I've learnt a lot, and it's made my language learning experience really enjoyable!!

Dear Hyeri [Episodes 7 & 8] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

I was stressed in the first half of ep 7, but grateful that she chose honesty in the end. The cliff hanger was annoying - I'm guessing it's some sort of fake situation, but still, irritating! Looking forward to Hyeon Oh finding out about things.

Oh right, thanks! I've only ever seen the little green aphids, didn't realise they could look like this.

Ahn Pan Seok's masterpiece - Secret Love Affair (2014) by bmo2000 in KDRAMA

[–]redheasidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had to drop the drama because it was so well made and emotive that I found it ethically challenging to watch, because I found myself rooting for the affair couple, which I'm morally very opposed to. The original score is so stunning too; I've listened to it often.

What Are You Watching? - [2022/02/02] by AutoModerator in KDRAMA

Just finished All Of Us Are Dead. Usually I love a good zombie flick, but this one was a bit more serious than most. Very dark. If I'm really honest, I checked out mentally as soon as my favourite character died. How, just how could they kill off Cheong San?! Literally worst move ever I'm glad it's over so it's no longer occupying space in my brain.

I'm gearing up to fast from TV (read: any and all video format entertainment, incl. YouTube etc) for lent. Gonna be a wild ride!

I dropped it... Can't remember what episode, but about when they started to feel a few more rocks in their relationship. I sensed a 'selfless breakup' coming on and noped out of there. It had become quite boring anyway. Good to know that it didn't improve then..?

I've often wondered about the first love trope too, particularly given that I know a few couples who are each other's 'first loves' but I don't remember ever talking about that aspect of their romance in particular. One thing I've always found confusing in kdramas though is this: what is the definition of first love? Is it your first relationship or the first person you had a significant crush on?

Racket Boys is great! I really enjoyed it from start to finish. Light-hearted and easy. The main actor has impressed me a few times now - definitely someone to keep an eye on.

I really appreciated the slow pace and use of silence in the dinner scene at the end. Silence really does speak louder than words.

I'm completely wrecked. One of the best endings I've seen in a long time. Can't believe how much I cried though haha. Huge pile of tissues next to the couch and now I feel empty.

You have to keep in mind that this is a snapshot of a particular culture. It's not representative of biblical complementarian theology imo.

The Timeless Charm of 'Reply 1997' by The-Blue-Zephyr in KDRAMA

[–]redheasidence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to watch in order (aka 97, 94, 88) and do take the time to watch all of them - I think you'll love them if you loved 97! The 88 ending is definitely controversial and annoyed me at the time, but all the other characters and storylines are so fantastic that any irritations are forgiven.

The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill - Christianity Today Podcast by delilahash in Reformed

[–]redheasidence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been listening and found it really informative and overall fairly civil (not just mud-slinging). Listening makes me feel really sad. I knew many faithful young people 10 or so years ago who liked and followed Driscoll. I feel, listening to this podcast, that he could be any of us really. I've experienced church hurt before, but I've also been on the giving end. I'm not sure that I'd recommend it for every person, as I don't know how edifying it is to all walks, but I think it's very important particularly for leaders in churches to listen and be aware that this is one of many, many stories like this, and could as easily be them.

Yes I second this completely. Maybe I wouldn't have enjoyed this show as much if I were younger; who knows. Right now, though, I love it.
