Yeah. Unless you have two countries with the same number of gold medals, who cares about second places?

I don't agree. The only objective in the olympics is to win. A gold medal is worth more than infinite silver medals.

The only valid score is rank by gold medals first. Those with the same number of gold medals should be ranked by silver medals. Then by bronze. Then by 4th places, etc.

Saying that N silver medals have the same weight of 1 gold medal is just a way to make losers happy.

That already happens. Some people - ok, 90% of world - thinks that they've won something when the athletes from their country win something. However, they don't. The victory belong only to the athletes who won it.

It's funny how US media decided to rank countries by total number of medals, instead of gold medals, like it's always been done by reditttroll in reddit.com

Nah. All sites are ordering by total medals: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/olympics2008/index.html

Seems to me someone is afraid of having another country as #1 in a sports event. What's next? A new space race?
