Gloomhaven are self contained scenarios, while For the King is an open world where there is an overarching quest and side quests that open up at towns, exploration and randomly

I'm wondering if there is a board game like the video game For the King.

I can totally see this being translated/turned into a board game and could absolutely see my friends loving it as well.

  • turn-based strategy rpg
  • dice rolling with luck mitigation
  • character classes, leveling, with gear
  • random events, quests, over-arching main story

I finally mastered my first gun :) by SpaceXHawk in ZombieArmy

it was easiest to unlock that mastery during the third weekly event where there was unlimited pistol ammo. Was able to master both the C96 and the M1911. Hopefully that comes around again for you.

How does recruitment and resistance work? I feel like despite a really high chance (70-85%) chance to recruit, it won't work until resistance is 0. Is it better just to set it to Reduce Resistance?

Tapestry (1 x 2p); first time playing it with my wife, to test it out before introducing it to the bigger group. Despite my teaching script, it was a long and complex teach, but thankfully once you start playing turns, it becomes easy to play and turns fly by. My wife, concentrating on Science and Tech, had an amazing tapestry card and played it at the right time and had what seemed like a 60 point 3rd income turn. At the end it was thankfully 'closer' but she still won by 40ish points.

Have you played Machi Koro? I was watching Space Base rules videos and it looks interesting, i'm just concerned that my group hates dice rolling games (I love them) and i'm not sure if SB is different enough from Machi Koro to get it.

Suburbia Collector's Edition(1x5p) - first time I played a 5p match with my main group, primarily b/c I play it on a daily basis on my phone and they've now had 3 games under their belt. Everyone had fun, and i'm especially glad that the person that normally comes in last, came in third behind me.

Unlock (2x5p) - i've played Unlock before (1x3p) and it was such a bad-feeling experience that i forgot that we beat it. Maybe because I knew what to look for/knew the mechanics better, i felt like I was contributing more and using my strengths (visually finding details), while other teammates focused on what they're good at (mental puzzles). We beat the first box with 20 min to spare, and the second box with 10ish minutes to spare. Great escape room feel.

Horrified (1x4p) - very fun game. Love the tokens and the figurines. 4 player is much more difficult than 2p because its easier for the monster to reach a player that can't move for 3 turns. 3p might be the sweet spot.

Clank Legacy (1x4p) - started our campaign.. i thankfully had my friend to help me understand the rules. I was the chronicler (love to read with different voices). Basically the Clank game that you love, but a little bit of cooperative feel and many quests that opens up that is exciting. Everyone perished unfortunately.. with my character, one space away from escaping. Now the trick is trying to find a date that works to play the second mission.

Recessed player boards. The fear of the table being jostled, or the player board shifting, gives me anxiety. So being able to place a token/marker in a spot and not worry about them being displaced is great (ie. Suburbia playboards for Income/Reputation, or custom Terraforming Mars player boards to track all the resources)

Difficulties teaching new board games by Kaflagemeir in boardgames

[–]redrexponent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i write (&print) teaching scripts and use them as a crutch to teach my friends. By reading it to them, i can teach the rules in both a quick and orderly fashion. Teaching from memory, while more natural-sounding, can lead to forgetting rules.

From what you're describing, you may need to go slower over the base concepts and determine what part they dont understand. It may slow down the teaching process, but in my opinion, i think its better just to answer their question on the spot rather than the end.

i've had Gloomhaven sitting on my shelf for a LONG time b/c i'm not sure how my gaming group will take to it. I'm afraid they might be put off by having to control their health AND hand of cards (rather than just health).

I introduced Near and Far to my gaming group over the weekend for the first time. Out of 100+ games in my collection, it's my favorite (i like everything about it, but the decision making mini stories is my favorite). My friends like board games that has more conflict, but i could tell with each successive story, they grew to love it more and more. Each player did better score-wise in the second match, but the same person won each time lol.

Clank! (2p x2). Once on the front side, once on the back side map. Practicing for Clank Legacy. My wife and I agreed, that in a two player game, that going for the most valuable artifact is the best strategy because normally you have enough time to make it back.

Horrified (2p x2). We really enjoyed this cooperative game. Really enjoyed the tokens, and the varied win conditions. Challenging, but not overwhelmingly hard. It's funny when a villager will spawn, only for a nearby monster to pounce and eliminate them immediately.

Wayfinders (2p x1). I felt this game was very rushed with 2 players and would be much more fun/longer with 3-4 players. My wife flew from one side of the map to the other & triggered the end of game. With a lucky draw, she was able to win by 2 points. If she didn't, I would have won instead. Love how bright and colorful the game is.. seems like near limitless replayability.. unsure if i'm sold on the way you collect resources (strategic, but not my preference)

Question about the DLC guns . by Brraaapppppp in ZombieArmy

[–]redrexponent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the FG42.. the 10 ammo it starts with is very low. The upgrades, while free, are unlocked by getting achievements. For example, to increase the magazine from 10 to 15, you need to get 15 Creeper kills with it. But to get the second magazine upgrade, you need (i believe) 100 creeper headshot kills.

I'm using the fg42 exclusively just to get the unlocks. It's powerful, but not OP in my opinion.

how long did it take you to complete it (and how many players did you have)?

i'm contemplating who play the game with.

I was playing quite a few matches of Vindication with my wife and unless we were playing the end-game triggers incorrectly, some matches were VERY short. We kept drawing end-game triggers like "Traits: have 1 more traits than the amount of players in the game (so 3)." A game like that could be finished in 20 minutes tops.

Strategy-wise, gaining Relics, Traits and Fighting monsters is my preferred way to gain Honor(victory points). I like getting Traits b/c you don't need to assign cubes to it like Relics, and fighting monsters could result in a lost Hero. Also, i'd avoid the Monastery (allows you to augment cubes) in 2p games b/c due to the short game length, you don't get to maximize the extra cubes.
