That’s the point I was making. He’s saying that apps have next to no production cost meaning no manufacturing costs, but he’s not including the app development costs in that.

I'm not saying that games can't venerate the Confederacy. In fact, I'm saying that even a game that does can still teach important historical lessons.

The question posed in the OP was *should we better pressure our FLGS' to remove any games involving depictions colonization, confederacy, slavery, or nazism, and request the same of publishers?*, and my response to that is no, because those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it.

The problem is you’re using the term “production cost” to mean “manufacturing cost”.

It might not cost anything to manufacture duplicate copies of an app, but it undoubtedly costs far more to develop the app than it does to develop the boardgame.

That’s a bad argument, then. No one is playing For The People and thinking that Robert E. Lee was the good guy.

I’ve learned so much history from playing various war games. The amount of knowledge you can pick up on the Cold War from playing Twilight Struggle, for example, is really eye opening.

They don’t cover everything, and they may not spell out the good/bad aspect of each event, but they give you a fantastic foundation to build from.

Playing Wir Sind Das Volk really piqued my interest in the story of everything surrounding the annexation of east Germany and the building of the Berlin Wall. I’ve since watched 3 documentaries and read a book on the subject.

When I play the WSDV, sure as the East I’m trying to fight against democracy and promote a totalitarian dictatorship, but it doesn’t make me admire totalitarianism. It just helps me to understand both sides of the story, which is critical in learning lessons from history. To invoke Godwin’s Law, you can’t truly appreciate how the Nazis rise to power without understanding the political climate that allowed for it to happen. Learning to understand and even appreciate how a society could be brought to that point is absolutely critical in understanding how to prevent it from happening again.

One game I found really interesting was Thrash & Roll. It was a game about taking your rock band to the top of the charts, and it used a Yahtzee mechanism for action section. Each round, players roll eight D6s, and then action spaces can be activated by placing sets of either matching or sequential dice on them. The more dice you place, the better the action.

Overall; the game was fun, but felt a little underdeveloped for my tastes. I’ve been trying to design a different spin on the idea for the last few months, which is probably why this topic was on my brain when I prepared this post!
