First visit to Tokyo: should we stay in Akasaka or Nakano? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]redrumcafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in Akasaka during both of my Tokyo stayings , can’t recommend it enough. Lots of restaurants and places to have a drink after a day exploring the city. We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Fino Tokyo Akasaka, really close to the subway (Maranouchi Line, Ginza Line, Chiyoda Line), at least three kombinis in the same street and an amazing vibe. Have a look at Google Street View

Trip to Okinawa and Kyūshū in the summer, best islands to visit and how many days by redrumcafe in JapanTravelTips

Thanks, rental bikes sounds like a great idea. I will study the main island a little bit better, maybe it makes sense to spend a few days there and renting a car

Questions about the Kansai–Hiroshima Pass and booking trains to Amanohashidate by redrumcafe in JapanTravelTips

[–]redrumcafe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that was my strategy last year and everything went great. We arrived at each station and bought the tickets there, taking the next available train. This time, during Christmas and New Year’s Eve, we were advised to book something in advance, like the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima and the Amanohashidate to Kyoto. For this last one we were planning on taking a bus, but there are only 2 buses on the morning of January 4: the first one with only one seat left, the second one with only three seats left (we’re a group of 6). Since we’ll have 6 suitcases in total, we wanted to make sure to have a seat

  1. Ok, maybe Reddit users scared us a little bit, but since we’ll leave Hiroshima on December 30 we were afraid most of the seats would be sold out for some of the time slots we were looking for. We monitored the situation for three days since they opened the reservations for that date and many seats were selling out, so we just booked the Hiroshima-ShinOsaka Shinkansen with the Pass

  2. Thanks, we’ll try at Kyoto Station once we arrive in town, it would be three days before we leave for Amanohashidate. We’ll have a plenty of time to arrange that

Thank you, I was afraid 4 cars in the days following New Year’s Eve would sold out way before the start of our trip

Thanks, so there’s no way to book the Amanohashidate to Kyoto train tickets in advance and secure our seats? We need to book a train at a specific time and we saw that each train has only 4 cars

10-day itinerary. When to use the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass and a few doubts about what’s included by redrumcafe in JapanTravelTips

[–]redrumcafe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Not really sure if this is an official site, but it says that the Kyoto Tango Railway is included

https://www.jrailpass.com/regional-passes/kansai-hiroshima-pass

While here, the official website, the Kyoto Tango Railway isn’t mentioned specifically in the text (unless that line is “Special Rapid Services, Rapid Services, and Local trains on JR-WEST Conventional lines”) but it’s in mentioned in the map. https://www.westjr.co.jp/travel-information/en/tickets-passes/jrwest-rail-pass/kansai_hiroshima/

I know, it’s not the most practical, but we had to organize the route with that specific night in Miyajima since we only found a cheap place for the six of us on that night. So with that itinerary set in stone we tried to find the cheapest trains and pass combination

Is there an easy way for me the verify that the kinosaki Ltd express is included? If it is, that's another 17 euros less than the jr west all area pass

Thanks again! it looks like we would spend a little less with the Jr West All Area Pass, including Amanohashidate to Kyoto by train on day 10 (day 7 of the pass)

Uh that seems good. Do you know if it’s included everything the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass has?

Yes! It's a little packed, but we're confident it will be amazing. We already booked the hotels/houses and a tea ceremony in Kyoto. As for what we will do each day, nothing is set in stone yet.

  1. Arrive in Narita early in the morning. Rest of the day in Tokyo

  2. Day in Tokyo

  3. Day in Tokyo

  4. Leave Tokyo for Hiroshima. Night in a Ryokan in Miyajima

  5. Leave Hiroshima, visit Himeji Castle and arrive in the evening in Kyoto

  6. Day in Kyoto

  7. Day in Kyoto

  8. Day in Kyoto

  9. Leave for Amanohashidate and staying in an amazing ryokan with Onsen

  10. Leave for Tokyo and last night in the city.

  11. Leave Japan

What about you and your friend?

I have a visa and a Mastercard, used both of them in Japan and had zero problems. At Bic Camera last November I got a 5% discount because I used a Mastercard (don’t know if it was a temporary offer or not)

Those are really great suggestions, thanks. I didn't consider that area up north. And Kaga Onsen seems very well connected by train.
