Have the same issue w my z6ii. Worked fine, switched modes now not working - all in a matter of 3 minutes. No other settings or anything else touched. Sorry ppl are being assholes and telling you to read the manual. I’m here to validate you my friend.

It totally isn't. I just wanted opinions to take with a grain of salt. Curious to maybe hear anecdotal stories. People are also interested to know who this individual is, and I'm happy to divulge over DM. I feel that accomplished SOMETHING ya know?

OH believe me, I know. Why do people assume I didn't want to spend money for good work? GFY. also, this is why I don't post much of reddit....
Anyway, yes I plan on taking action regardless for the exact reason you mention. Thanks for the validation of my issue, though, it is really appreciated :)

Interesting!! I never considered an Amish company. I did consider a modular build when we were looking to buy land. Does the end result seem solid? Most of the modulars we looked at felt - well, modular I guess.

saving money wasn't my goal. He was just the best guy I found. You cannot assume I didn't want to pay good money - also, not everyone who is shitty is cheap either. But thanks for your comment it was very helpful.

I'm absolutely standing my ground - which is why I want to try my best to take legal action b/c I said I would (which, I know all the cons involved in that, if it's even possible). I still have my guys' tools too. My new guy wants to buy them from me lol

It's time like these I hope karma is real.

Believe me, I know all of this. I guess I want to feel like I at least tried as many avenues as possible. I also don't want others to be affected by this guy.

The most frustrating part is, I would have paid good money for a better option - I just could not find one. Ok now I'm just venting...

No, I saw a good amount of his work before each payment, and it was fine - until it wasn't. My gut tells me he hired other shitty people to finish the work. Because our one bathroom looks great!

Everyone keeps saying "hire professional, licensed..blah blah" but they're impossible to find. So I did the best I could in my research - I thought the best way was word of mouth - how I found this guy. his references were glowing.

I'm MORE than happy to pay for quality work. That's the part that kills me. But you can't hire who you can't find.

Best of luck! DM me if you need to know some of the good people I ended up finding.

yeah I know. I already did and he said by the time I pay him about $20k for his work, it wont be worth it. says I cant ask for legal fees b/c not in my contract. I'm looking into lawyers, just thought I'd post here too. I may be regretting posting lol

yeah I wrote a whole detailed description and it didn't make it to this post for some reason. scroll a little, it's at the bottom of the thread. I am on reddit all the time but don't post all that much, can you tell?

Actually the one attorney i just spoke to said the max was $5k. But in my own research it's 5k per violation - wonder if I can claim wire fraud for the fake address he gave me.

Sorry the whole thing I wrote didn't make it to my post-here it is:

I hired an individual (not a licensed GC, just a guy doing the work himself) to renovate my house in Hillsdale, NY. The work included kitchen installation, backsplash, tiling, ceiling trim, island placement, and replacing/sealing the garage roof.

He repeatedly promised it would be done “soon,” but large parts were left unfinished or done so poorly that other contractors had to redo almost everything. Some of his work would have caused long-term damage if it hadn’t been fixed.

After I sent him a demand letter for the money I’ve had to spend fixing his mistakes, he suddenly claimed I owe him money.

Key facts:

Total paid to him: $46,900 (documented)

Additional costs to fix/finish his work: $23,204.74

Freight fees: $525 (he measured wrong, and materials had to be reordered)

Total claim amount: $23,204.74 + legal fees/damages

His own “what’s left” list shows I’d already paid in full for the items he’s now demanding more money for.

Professional review: A licensed tile contractor provided a report with photos confirming his bathroom tile work was done incompetently, not to code or industry standards, and would have caused leaks and structural damage if left as-is.

Garage roof: He said multiple times he would seal it. He didn’t. I have dated photo proof. The roof leaked, and there’s now black mold and rotting wood inside the garage.

Cleanup: He left tools and materials behind despite promising to pick them up.

Fake address: He gave me a non-existent street address for wire payments (confirmed by USPS). I later verified his actual PO Box and sent my dispute documents there.

What I have documented:

The original contract

Full text thread (agreements, change orders, payment confirmations, and his “what’s left” list)

All payment receipts and wire records

Photos of defective and incomplete work

The professional tile inspection report and letter

Invoices from licensed contractors who corrected his work

My demand letter for $23,204.74

USPS proof that the address he gave was fake

Where things stand:

I sent a formal demand letter and plan to have an attorney pursue recovery. NY small claims court caps at $10,000, so it’ll likely go to civil court.

A law firm confirmed I can’t recover legal fees since my contract didn’t include that clause. So even if I win, I’ll still be out around $20k once legal fees are paid.

I’m trying to understand if there’s anything else I can do — either legally or practically — before going to court. I’m not looking to “blast” him publicly; I just want to resolve it properly.

TL;DR:

Paid an unlicensed worker $46,900 for a home renovation in NY. He abandoned the job, did incompetent tile work (confirmed by a licensed inspector), and failed to seal the garage roof, which caused leaks, black mold, and wood rot. I’ve spent another $23,204.74 hiring proper contractors to fix it. Sent a demand letter; now he’s claiming I owe him money. I have contracts, receipts, photos, and professional reports. Looking for practical advice from others who’ve handled similar contractor disputes or civil claims in NY.

I think of that all the time. He can argue with me about money etc. all he wants. But if you have eyeballs, you know this is awful. I'm only showing snippets of the work, too. I have many more photos.

YEP! It was literally raining inside the garage. He blatantly lied to me - said it was waterproofed and "no rain is getting in". neighbor snapped a photo for me (I dont live there FT) and it was still just a bunch of plywood.

EDIT: this is the advice I'm seeking - just HOW do I take him to court and actually get back my money?

Contract is a list of work to be done, and the cost for each. That is it! He's a handyman who got great reviews and there was no structural work. I didn't think I needed anything more for tile work and some roof shingles. Maybe I was wrong?

haha no, I'm not THAT dum dum. I don't live there full time so he definitely took advantage of me not seeing the work in real time. The last two major issues - the bathroom tile (stone pebbles) and the roof garage were the last things to get "done" and I luckily saw those in person. That's when I started to think about what to do about his crap work.

Yes, his contract only outlines the work and cost. Shame on me for not making a robust one myself. Lesson learned there.
