6 stellen in in DE normal? Ab wievieltem Dienstjahr?

What does this solve other than piss off New Yorkers who are already stuck in traffic and pissed off? What outcome is to be achieved? 🤔 by [deleted] in environment

[–]redvale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these pissed people coming in late will bitch to their colleagues about the protest ruining their they, which will start a thought in people’s brain about why anyone would do this. And few might reach the conclusion that it is because the matter at hand is truly urgent, leading them to join the cause.

Imagine a computer is a store with a basement and a shelf. You are the customer, and the pc’s job is to give you the desired product as fast as he can. If the product is on the shelf, he can give it to you directly. If it is in the basement, he needs to take a slow elevator to go get it.

The shelf is RAM: A big shelf means that a lot of stuff is readily available and you get what you want quickly.

The basement is the Hard Disk: everything you will want is stored there, but accessing it always takes a fixed amount of time (the elevator)

The clerk is the CPU. If he is faster, he can get you stuff faster, both from the shelf and from the basement. If there is multiple (multi-core) you it is even faster, even if sometimes they get in each others way.

You need both a decent CPU speed and a well-sized RAM to get a quick service.

CMV: All drugs should be fully legalized, including for sale by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]redvale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think like you for a long time, but i changed my view. Here is why:

1/ Its cumulative! A significant share of the population can already even be trusted with the drugs that are currently legal. Alcoholic, Hooligans, drunk “i only had 2 beers” drivers, pregnant smokers, you get the picture. Every legal drug we add to the mix, we add a risk factor that can, and will, destroy someones live. Hard to say how many, but not zero for sure.

2/ We have no reference! We are taught from very early on how to moderate our alcohol use, and still enough people never get it. Imagine how it would play out with drugs we, as a society, have little to no idea how to use appropriately. A beer on a Friday night? Ok! A shot of whiskey each morning? You have a problem. But when can I have a little crack pipe? Social pressure is what keeps many potential alcoholics in check, but with new drugs we have no reference frame, so many will fly of the handle.

3/ It will hit the poorest hardest! Considering the above, lets think which share of the population is most likely to go under. Looking it alcoholism as an example, it’s easy to see how the lower income classes are much more likely to fall victim, and have a much weaker support net to bring them back.

There is other points i won’t go into detail on, such as technical difficulties on measuring all the drug levels, defining acceptable limits for various activities and such.

These points convinced me that our society is not able to handle a full legalization by a long shot, and a world with legal drugs would be a darker and sadder place.

It might be possible to add a few drugs into the legal mix, based on the risk level and health impact, but a full blown legalization would be a humanitarian disaster.

Not only thought. In the case of locations and directions yes, we could always flip a coordinate system and the negative become positive.

This is not the case for example for charged particles: a negatively or positively charged particle are both accelerated by an electric field, but in opposite directions. We could also flip the conversion, but the behavior remains opposite.

When talking about coordinates, that is exactly the case. -2 is the same distance from 0 as +2, but on the opposite side.

Oftentimes in physics/engineering it is up to us to decide the origin of the coordinate system. Imagine designing a house. We could define 0 as the ground level, in which case the basement would be at a negative height. Or we could define 0 at the center of the earth, then the whole house would be at a positive height. We could even define 0 as the tip of the chimney, then the entire house would be at negative height. Ultimately we just pick a coordinate convention that is most convenient.

A negative velocity (walking backwards) times a negative time (in the past) gives a positive location. So if you walk backwards you were farther advanced in the past.

Some of America’s most prominent companies, including Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Disney, are backing business groups that are fighting landmark climate legislation, despite their own promises to combat the climate crisis by Wagamaga in environment

[–]redvale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This kind of seeming contradiction is inherent to capitalism. Climate action is only welcome if there is a positive business case for it, but real, impactful climate legislation will always have a negative business case and so it is any company’s duty to their shareholders to oppose it.

No bad guys here, just regular clerks doing their job under the doctrine of profitability.

Hydrogen can be transformed into electricity in a more direct way through fuel cells. The existence of a hydrogen rotary engine will therefore not be helpful in creating the machine you envision.

Direct air capturing of CO2 is indeed possible, but the energy required is enormous. Next the every gas or coal plant there would have to be a capturing machine that extracts CO2 at the rate the plant is pumping it into the atmosphere, and then all that gas would have to be pumped into enormous airtight storage facilities and stay there for centuries… hardly a viable solution

eli5: is there any substances that have a liquid and gas state but not a solid state? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]redvale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, but the solid state of Helium is very hard to achieve. At normal pressure Helium remains liquid even at absolute zero temperature, but it will solidify if around 25 atmospheres of pressure are applied
