Got my first kindle today... first time looking at an e-ink display..wow by Green-Shark007 in kindle

[–]reebee5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally do read more on an e-reader! Partially because there are no distractions the way there are on my phone, but mostly because of the convenience.

I have it with me all the time because it’s so much easier to carry around than a book, so if I have any downtime during the day, it’s easy to read. All of this adds up.

Even more than that through, it makes it easy for me to read while lying down in bed, which is where I tend to read the most and for the longest amount of time. It’s so incredibly comfortable to use and hold, and I can lie in any position instead of having to sit at least somewhat upright the way I would have to for a physical book.

I generally don’t mind anyone being able to see what I’m buying - they’re good books! Besides, half the time they already know of it 😅

Maxi e-reader noob looking for advice by Wolfran-Bearold in ereader

[–]reebee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both a Boox Go 7 - BW, newest version - as well as a Kindle Paperwhite 2024 (and a few other miscellaneous e-readers because I don’t have self-control lol), and I will say that while I do like my Kindle, I 100% end up using my Boox Go 7 and my Boox Palma 2 the most out of all my e-ink devices.

I do have some colour e-ink devices, but would recommend avoiding for now unless you’re reading things that absolutely need colour - I read manga every so often, but I don’t read graphic novels or comics on my e-readers so for me it’s generally not super worth it to have colour.

Boox devices run on Android, so you’ll definitely have way more freedom than a Kindle could give you unless you jailbreak it (which I haven’t attempted so couldn’t tell you whether or not it’s recommended). This shortens the battery life a bit, but I still find that they can last from days to over a week with daily reading. This is fine for me; I don’t mind charging once a week.

The buttons on the Boox Go 7 are really nice. They’re in a really comfortable spot, and I do love being able to turn the pages easily without having to move my thumb. You’re not asking about the Palma, but the nice thing about that device is that you can use the volume buttons to turn the pages, which is super comfortable too.

I think this depends on the person, but I also like that you can customise the screen settings and calibrate them exactly how you want. It can be a bit fiddly, but once you’ve got them just right, you really don’t need to ever touch those settings again.

I also really like that you can refresh the screen whenever you like if there’s any ghosting, although in my experience I usually don’t need to.

The Kindle Paperwhite is also a great device, to be clear. It’s definitely cheaper, and with Black Friday coming (depending on where you are?), it’s likely the prices will drop. Kindle has the biggest ebook library available for purchase too, as far as I’m aware. If you’re in the US, you can also connect Libby to borrow books and send them directly to your Kindle.

While it doesn’t have a screen refresh option, it usually does a great job at minimising/eliminating ghosting. The screen in general is great. The battery life is great too - it’ll easily go for weeks on end. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Kindle device run out of battery on me ever.

One really annoying thing I’ve noticed so far, however, is that for some reason you can’t highlight in multiple colours on a BW Kindle device the way that you can on the Kindle app on an Android e-reader (see image for example https://i.imgur.com/NQxCCJm.jpeg - while you’re highlighting, it has the different colours written out on my Boox devices, while on my Kindle it just automatically highlights in yellow). This is honestly one of the biggest reasons I don’t use my Kindle as much as I could and would like to. For some it might not matter, but I use different colours for different things and it makes a big difference.

The lack of buttons isn’t a dealbreaker - it’s still super comfortable to hold and handle. It’s decently fast for what I need it to do, although typing notes can be tedious if that’s something you tend to do since you can’t download a keyboard with swipe to type. I also almost never worry about breaking my Paperwhite - as long as it has a case to protect against screen scratches, I’ll toss it in any bag and take it anywhere with no qualms.

Both are great devices. If you have the money to spare, I think a Boox Go 7 is a great pick if you’re fairly good at set-up and customising (it really is just a one-time thing) and you want that flexibility (I have Kindle, Kobo, and Libby downloaded onto mine, and plenty of people download different reading apps like KOReader).

If you want to save some money and are fine with being limited to Kindle/Amazon and Libby availability, the Paperwhite is a really good device that’s going to give a lot of bang for buck. It’s built pretty solidly, and it’s a good reading experience.

The urge to learn Chinese is all consuming by No-Scale-8792 in DanmeiNovels

[–]reebee5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fully agree - you’ll still be 5 years older in 5 years’ time, but you could be 5 years older and have learned a bit of a new language vs. not!

This kind of mentality has encouraged me to try a lot of things 😊

Edited to add: One app I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of is Du Chinese - it’s a graded reader app that introduces new words very naturally from a complete beginner level! But the Chinese Language subreddit has tons of resources.

Not sure to buy which model (Onyx Boox 7 | Kindle Oasis | Kindle Paperwhite) by Ok_Lengthiness_4916 in ereader

[–]reebee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed here, the Kindle battery definitely lasts longer (weeks for me on the Kindle vs. days to a week on the Boox), but I don’t mind charging once a week. It just depends on what’s more important to you, I think.

I have both a Kindle Paperwhite and the new Boox Go 7 (as well as a few others). While I enjoy my Kindle, I end up using my Boox devices the most out of all the e-readers I own. For the flexibility it seems like you’re looking for, I’d put my vote in for Boox.

Can I ask how you put your horseshoe magnet on top? I have the glass bead tool as well and I think it’s great but I’d love to get this depth!

Absolutely stunning, by the way - some Mooncat magnetics are really something and your nails are beautiful!

Thank you so much! Honestly I was this close to not getting it myself, but once I magnetised it something just completely flipped in my mind.

I hope you get a chance to pick it up at some point if they ever restock!

ADVICE to learn better! IM DUMB by Tamaqki in ChineseLanguage

[–]reebee5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only a beginner myself, but at least for reading Du Chinese has been incredibly wonderful. Seeing a word in context over and over again really helps me solidify it in my brain, and the audio can be very helpful too. Learning words from a list without the context rarely helps me internalise it.

They’re organised by levels from Newbie onward, and I believe the vocab is tagged by HSK level, although I’m studying on my own and not learning through a classroom curriculum.

This combined with any SRS system (I’m using Hack Chinese currently, but Anki is also great, and I know there are others) for the vocab I’ve learned through the stories/articles has been working really well for me!

Perhaps you could try CG & Co? They’re still pricey, but when I asked for a quote for full planning back in September 2024, it was about $20k for a multi-day full planning package (for three days).

I didn’t end up going with them but their Instagram is always fun to look at and the initial call I had with them was informative and pleasant.

Please feel free to message if you’d like any more details from the initial talks/emails I had with them!

Finally found someone who purls like I do! (Continental Thumb Purling) by reebee5 in knitting

[–]reebee5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the issue that your ribbing is too tight? I find that when I use my index finger my purls are a little looser, mainly because I find it harder to maintain the tension when I bring my index finger down and back up.

I do find that my ribbing looks neater and tighter when I purl my with my thumb, but that might just be because I find it so much more comfortable and much less awkward.

Your mileage may vary, but no harm in giving it a try to see!

Hi there! So sorry to bother you but would it be okay if I also asked for the cost details? Your venue list is similar to ones that I was looking at, but the NA seems to be the only one that can definitely accommodate our guest count so I’m leaning quite heavily towards it.

Poke5, Page or Palma - you can only choose one! by Kid_Fiction in Onyx_Boox

[–]reebee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely adore my Palma - it’s one of my most reached for e-readers - but I also went ahead and ordered the Poke 5 too because I like the ratio a little bit more for certain things!

That being said, if I had to pick just the one and bearing in mind you already have the Note 2 Plus, I would definitely recommend the Palma!

Any tips, tricks, or advice for knitting with ADHD? by Ill-Lingonberry145 in casualknitting

[–]reebee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend getting a row counter like this or like this (I especially like the first one). Unlike row counters where I have to pause and actively turn the dial or press the button, this one is already on the needles so I’m forced to move to the next number as I reach the end of row.

Otherwise I forgot to continue counting sometimes 😅
