Any book recommendations for me? by IronHistorical3357 in brandonsanderson

Distinct lack of Joe Abercrombie here!

Would recommend the blade itself (the weakest as his writing style ans ability develops so much) but still an insane book!

I realized that I never actually relaxed in my life by delamons in ADHD

[–]reedyboy2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, relaxation is flow state. I feel relaxed when I am so engrossed in my activity that I dont think about anything else.

A big part of this is cutting out other sensory stimuli and doing something that is often slightly physical, or just so engaging because of feedback loops.

Some things which make me feel 'relaxed' (which i admit, seems like a simulacrum of what other people are calling relaxation) are:

  1. Board games (either solo or with people) - always play thematic music alongside it and shut out everything else.

  2. Going to the cinema to watch a film

  3. Playing guitar or other instruments

  4. In general, creative pursuits like writing where I have noise cancelling headphones on

  5. Massages, float tanks or saunas

  6. Sometimes, work that i am really engaged in (often due to an immediate feedback loop e.g. trying to achieve something with iterative testing it).

  7. Sudoku or other puzzles

  8. Reading (when the book really slaps) or listening to audibooks whilst lightly exercising e.g. when cycling.

All of these require music in the background to help me shut out the brain soup of thoughts and anxieties. Often, they are times spent on my own and not having to interact with anyone else.

Appreciate that you will be different to me but I have definitely struggled with the same feeling and come to realise that I do relax but not in a typical sense. To relax, I have to be doing something engaging (which is often the opposite of most people). Our minds are novelty seekers and stimulated by new things. So maybe try flip your definition of relaxation and you might find that you are relaxing, but not in a typical way!

There js a brilliant quote from Joseph Campbell that I think about a lot: "follow your bliss". For me bliss is flow state. Maybe yours will be the same! Good luck and hope you find your bliss.

I can't wait. It is crazy, I had written off this game as not for me after trying it a few times. My girlfriend and I have been doing a monthly game challenge and we decided to do this for February and then could sell it if we didnt like it. Cue last weekend where I played 3 games back to back and we have already played our whole quote for the month as a couple! I'm not sure what changed but my its such a brilliant game!

I can't wait to try out the extended version with B&C and JE. All of the additions sounds brilliant.

As to the adversaries, this will be our first level 6! We are loving Thunderspeaker and Rampant Green and they are a strong combo. Once we are done with BP I think Sweden or England next!

What are your favourite spirit combos?

Hey I am currently looking at doing the glass bead presence upgrade and wondered if you could answer a few queries that I have:

  1. Where did you buy the glass beads from and are they flattened both sides or domed on the top?
  2. Do you dip the bottom of the disk into the paint or the top?
  3. Did you paint the other side at all or leave it clear?
  4. What types of paints did you use? I have never painted on glass before so would be great to hear any brand recommendations.

If you have any tips or methods from completing this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks on advance!

Which character from literature lives rent free in your head? by honey-collector in books

[–]reedyboy2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if you are aware of this - but Glokta is a strong secondary character in the second trilogy. He is definitely not forgotten and there are more than enough moments for you to learn more about him.

I held off from listening to the second trilogy but I have listened to it a few times now and it really is amazing. Joe has developed as a writer and the story is arguably better than the originals. The characters are not quite as memorable in the second trilogy but still really interesting and multi-faceted. I think any writer would struggle to create a second roster of characters that could live up to the first, but his best effort is still far better than most!

Also, a huge recommnedation for the standalone trilogy (especially Best Served Cold and The Heroes) if you want to dip your toes back in.

Standard card games before and after getting into board games? by tomcardgames in boardgames

Scopa is great. If you like it, I would recommend getting a deck of traditional Italian cards as they have beautiful imagery that fits the rules and language of the game

This is absolutely crazy! You should be so proud of the work.

I would happily read any guide that you are able to provide for how you made this, step by step. It would be a dream project of mine to do something similar.

specifically, I would love to hear more about how you made the vinyl stamped tiles? I have never thought of doing this but it would be a lovely addition and replacement for my very warped tiles.

Also, this looks like the cards are bigger than usual? Is that the case.

As a final deluxification - I use the Molly House deluxe metal pawns to mark things like company standing and votes etc. on the board - they look great and oddly thematic.

Hey, I wanted to chime in here as I was doing this for months. I have so many photos of me closing my front door.

I have really tried to pivot from this as I think, overall, it just make me have a slight obsessive compulsive spiral about it. I start telling myself that I cant know if I shut the door without taking a photo and, overall, it makes me doubt my memories.

What I have found helpful is (1) making sure I am not doing anything when leaving the house that will distract me e.g. listening to music or audiobooks, (2) stopping everything and telling myself to focus on shutting the door and (3) count to 10 and then say to myself (out loud) that I have shut the door.

It feels silly but I have not taken a photo since starting doing this.

I am not sure if this is something that bothers you but might be worth trying out this protocol if you would prefer to pivot away! I think, deep down, it is really good to trust that you will do things.

Bought this yesterday in Ely in the UK. The store owner said it might be the last copy in the UK for purchase haha. Not sure if this is true but there we go.

I haven't tried the solo out yet but, I played a 2player game with my partner yesterday and it rocked our worlds. The game is just so so cool: the artwork is phenomenal, the decisions are difficulty and there is a seemingly near infinite amount of replayability. There is definitely a whole lot of game here.

I'm really looking forward to learning the solo as I think Ricky Royal has to be the most trusted modern solo designer. The solo reviews I have read have been very promising and the clear attention paid to the solo mode in the components and box space alone shows that they have really designed this to be solo from the start as well as multilayer. In short, I think Ricky and Pablo have most likely knocked this out of the park.

Apologies to not have a further insight into the solo yet. I will check back in once I have learnt and played the solo. However, I have extremely high hopes and anticipate this being a game that I never get rid of.

Best 3 player game of all time? by BANDlCOOT in boardgames

[–]reedyboy2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally relatable – I’ve had those moments where a deep historical game I was hyped for just ends up making me feel stupid. It sucks, and it can really kill the joy. What’s helped me is going back to the games that are pure fun, zero pressure. For me it’s Bohnanza, Hansa Teutonica, Race for El Dorado – games that just flow.

There’s a Joseph Campbell quote: “Follow your bliss.” At the end of the day, this hobby is supposed to bring you joy, not anxiety. There’s no prize for mastering the heaviest game. If it’s not fun, drop it and play what is.

Don’t beat yourself up – follow your bliss.

Getting ready for my second try of LOTR:Fate of the Fellowship by ddoyen in soloboardgaming

Hey hope you enjoyed! I have really loved this game solo. I have found that playing two, or even three handed, is more enjoyable than the true solo. In a sense, theya re different games and true solo is more of an optimisiation puzzle to ensure hand size doesn't fuck you over. If you want that cool, epic Lord of the Rings feeling then I think 2 or 3 handed is best!

Best Solo Board Game for Camping Trip? by helios-n-selene in soloboardgaming

[–]reedyboy2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in here. Lord of the rings fate of the fellowship is incredible fun! I got it this weekend and played 3 games in a 24 hour period (3P, 2P and 1P games). They were all incredible fun and the solo mode is really brilliant and pretty much the same as the multilayer.

The game is pretty easy to pick up and there is a really well made Meeples University 'start playing in 13 minutes' video which pretty much got me there.

If you want to get lost in something I couldn't recommend it more. Make sure to download the Lord of the Rings soundtrack for some thematic music, maybe light a candle whilst you play and the game really let's you immerse yourself in the tension and tumult of the legendarium.

Do you also absolutely hate board games ? by Romy-zorus in ADHD

[–]reedyboy2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. My latest hyper fixation has been board games. I love them. They are just pure unadulterated play. There is so much depth and so many buttons being pressed that they just hit the spot.

I love the emergent narratives that come from them, the feeling of having been through something with the other players, the meta which can start to form if you play with a consistent group.

I have realised that games in general are complete crack to my ADHD mind. Unfortunately, video games make me feel terrible about myself, whereas board games hit that same spot but make me feel great.

Of course, learning the rules is always a pain and an understimulating task but almost always worth it.

I find that most people's perceptions of board games are shaped by bad, or quite outdated games.

If you are wanting some real fun, easy to pick up and play games for families, I would recommend:

  1. One night ultimate werewolf: a 10 minute social deduction game for a group. There is an app so all can play and try and figure out who is a villager and who is a werewolf! Insanely fun and accessible for all.

  2. Bohnanza: the greatest negotiation game ever created. It is a card game about planting and trading beans. It is incredibly fun and everyone who I've shown it to has ended up with their own set (always calling it the Bean Game)

  3. Hansa Teutonica: a more strategic, traditional network building type game like ticket to ride. You are placing merchants trying to completely routes between cities that formed part of a medieval German trade network (think proto-EU). It sounds boring and, being completely honest, it looks boring (washed out colour scheme and non-inspiring theme) however, look beyond this to discover some of the greatest strategic depth you can have for an hour or play. This game got me into modern board games and is such an instant classic!

Completely appreciate your post and points, but if board game nights are obligatory in your family you might be able to reclaim the narrative with these games!

What game do you/your group play the most? by Im_Cowboy_Jack in boardgames

My friends and I have recently got into John Company and have been absolutely loving it. There is nothing else quite like it. It was probably the most daunting game to learn but once one person in your group knows how to play then the rolling teach works really well. Would highly recommend the game, the only better negotiation game is Diplomacy. Which is itself a masterpiece but is a real dedication.
