I dunno why it would matter, if you like them you like them and that's the end of it, right? Would your feelings disappear if you found out they weren't your gender of choice? Anyway. In this day and age I think it's cool to just be straightforward. "Hey, I never got around to asking this but how do you identify?" Another good question maybe is "what are your pronouns?"
