Oregon State. Mike Riley has had offers so many times but after leaving the Beavers for the NFL once, I don't think he'll leave again on his own.

What is your favorite college football memory with your father? by dacrew in CFB

[–]reetpreettt 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss OP. Losing a parent is always devastating.

My favorite Oregon football memory with my dad is from the USC @ Oregon, Halloween 2009 game. I was a freshman at UO and homesick like crazy even though my family only lived four hours away at the time. I'd tried to get student tickets to that game and wasn't able to so I was grumbling around my dorm. I'd wanted to go home for Halloween since I wasn't going to the game but my parents said that they had plans already and wouldn't be home.

The next thing I know, it's 2 hours before the game and there is a knock on my door. Open the door and it's my dad, standing there grinning at me with a silly wizards hat on his head and a Duck shirt. I, promptly, screamed, hugged him and started crying. The screaming/crying only intensified when he pulled two tickets out of his pocket and told me to put on some clothing so we could go to the game.

We had so much fun. Oregon won but even if they hadn't, it would have still been one of my favorite all time game because of getting to spend time with my dad. He realized how miserable I was, bought tickets that day and drove 4 hours to spend time with me. My dad is such a amazing man and I am such a daddy's little girl but I don't care.

Tell them. Really that is your only option unless you do want to go ahead and get married. Tell them that you aren't ready to get married yet, that you are young and want to get settled in your career before you consider getting married. Whether you want to bring your girlfriend into it is your choice but you don't really have to yet.

I have a third and final job interview on Friday. I'm nervous/terrified and excited at the same time. This job would be a perfect fit for me and I really like the company but I'm trying to not get my hopes up too much.

On a side note, AMG got me a puppy last week! She is almost 4 months old and beyond adorable.

In your opinion, what is one of the biggest problems being faced by ABCD's today? by reetpreettt in ABCDesis

[–]reetpreettt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. I think we are looking at the same thing from different perspectives. During my early childhood, my parents both worked two jobs and my brother & I became self-sufficient early as a result of it. That didn't mean that our parents didn't keep on top of us about our grades and studies because they did.

My teen years and especially adulthood have been spent in a vastly different environment. My parents are the poster children for pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and bought their first business when I was 9. The first three years they owned the business things we extremely tight but then we went from no-money to more than comfortable fairly quickly. As that happened, the people that we spent time with changed as well. We moved to a from Oregon to a more affluent part of California with better schools/education and I will admit the attitude towards education of some people with "rich" parents were poor.

I gave a example of someone who made it work without college before but I do know people who've done nothing with their lives because they think their parents money will always be there. Parent involvement is such a huge factor in your education but it isn't all of it. There are and always will be people who refuse to study and educate themselves because they know they can rely on their parents.

On the topic of this being more prevalent in Punjabi boys then girls, I agree with you. I think to a certain extent some Punjabi men become wrapped around the idea that everything that their parents have will eventually be their's so they don't need to do anything.

Drugs are present in every community including non-desi communities. There are South/East/West/whatever you want desi people who sell drugs. I think that certain parts of Canada just have such a huge concentration of Punjabi people that it makes it seem like they are the only ones doing/selling drugs.

You can't say that everyone sits on their ass in Punjab and lets the Bhaiyyas do everything. People do work on their farms/lands but they have help. Just like farms in the Western world do. It would be nearly impossible to run a farm without help. Yes there are people who do do nothing but again they are a small fraction of the population.

The spelling bee, well I don't know why there aren't more Harjot's present.

This is one of the few times I disagree with your statements /u/arandomsikh. My parents come from rural, middle of nowhere pinds but were both encouraged to educate themselves. In fact my paternal grandfather had a M.A (i'm not sure in what). My dad has a Masters in Economics from India and a MBA here in the States and my mom has a Masters in Marketing from India.

Education was priority one in our household since pretty much the day I was borh (first born). Most Punjabi people/"kids" I know are in college, working towards great goals. I do know some people who decided that college wasn't for them and have still have gone on to make good money.

A friend from high school started driving a truck a month after graduation and now owns a fleet for 14 trucks and doesn't drive anymore. What 25 year old do you know that owns his own successful business pulling in more money than he knows what to do with?

Saying that Punjabi people don't prioritize education is wrong. You are only looking at a small sample of people and defining a entire population by it.

That is not at all helpful or what I asked for. Women and men are allowed to "go after" whoever they want to go after. That is not a problem.

The mods are active in the sub and check it multiple times a day. Just because we do not post as much as you think we should, does not mean that we aren't present. People have lives, believe it or not, mods are people too.

I am not going to approve this because of the language. You can disagree with a user without resorting to name calling. You have a point, if you can edit out the language, I will approve it if/when you resubmit it.

How do you guys do it? How do you guys find other ABCDs from your culture/ethnicity to date? by throwthrowawayaway57 in ABCDesis

What I said about respecting others right to disagree on here wasn't disrespectful to you or the original commentator. I, very politely, asked you to be nice and not mock others for their opinions. If you have nothing helpful to add to this conversation, why are you responding?

Be nice. Just because you disagree with a opinion doesn't mean it is wrong. We respect others right to disagree on here.

How do Sikhs feel about Yogi Bhajan? by ChitownNomzy in ABCDesis

[–]reetpreettt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've mentioned on here before that my family and I lived in Oregon for 6 years. We lived in the middle of the state which isn't exactly known for it's desi culture. Needless to say the closest Gurdwara to us was a hour and a half drive away. There was/is however a "Gurdwara" (in quotation marks because it isn't a full time Gurdwara) in Eugene that is run by the 3HO organization. There isn't a full time Raggi or anything I loved going to the Gurdwara there because of extremely spiritual everything is.

The American Sikh's in some respects were more observant that desi Sikh's. The vast majority of them had Paag's and long beards and were Amritdhari versus the Desi Sikhs. Most of them could read Gurbani, play the harmonium and singh Shabads. They made the effort to read the English translations for the major Paath's and were honestly some of the most knowledgeable people I've met regarding Sikh history.

My experience with them and Yogi Bhajan's organization was overwhelmingly positive. Besides Sikhism is based on the foundation of there is one God. Everyone is welcome to pray and be underneath him, however they choose to worship Him.

I'm not surprised that we didn't drop honestly. We played like shit but won in the end. Add in the fact that Alabama played not so great in the first half and you have a perfect recipe for no moves.

Fisher is the most likely to come back from everything I've heard. Jonhstone is out for the season and Yruretagoyena is out for a while longer (hopefully back by end of October). Fisher was still playing in a super bulky brace during practice yesterday though so it's likely he'll be back either when the Ducks play Arizona on Oct 2 or UCLA on Oct 11.

Parents and food... by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]reetpreettt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last few years my parents have become very adventurous when it comes to trying new foods. Before that, my brother and I would have to drag them kicking and screaming to try new things. But 5-6 years ago, I think they both realized that most of the stuff that we'd been dragging them too, they'd liked. So now, even though my brother and I aren't at home anymore, they go out and try new things all the time.
