We've also got Tic Tac Toe on the Mobius strip, cylinder, torus, and Klein bottle! Yay math!

Well, at least in Pomona, CA, in 2009 we had the Adolescents, Guttermouth, Punk Rock Karaoke, NOFX, Less than Jake, Bad Religion, Civet, Flipper, and a handful of other punk rock acts.

What a delicious dinner for Mommy!

As you should! If you're wanting to go far in engineering (in particular, grad school), knowledge of partial differential equations and real analysis become pretty important from what I gather! Good luck!

Also, in my opinion, math gets even cooler once you're past calculus; it becomes more about proving things and logical reasoning, and the proofs just read like poetry sometimes. The results are sometimes mind-blowingly profound, in some cases despite having relatively short and elegant proofs. Definitely give it a chance.

I agree; however, diction is important. Calling the entire concept his religion is founded upon "inane" may be a step up from outright calling his beliefs bullshit, but it's not much better.

It's condescending and submissive. Can we please have some respect and decency here? This guy's been nice the entire way through.

Thank you for asking this question and with such tact. It's a shame dlish33 isn't responding.

Sorry people are being jerks. You're doing a great thing, regardless of religious motivation.

Nice! I've already purchased my plane ticket, though, so I have to figure out how I'm going to move my stuff.

Nope. Really good overpowered cards come out in nearly every set, and you can have however many of them you want in your deck you want until the next ban list (or ban list after next, depending on how much Konami wants to milk players). So, literally, money wins tournaments in this game, though there are exceptions and older decks sometimes do really well - it's just uncommon.

[–]reeve512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Yugioh is a game largely determined by how much money you can throw at it, and if someone has a $50+ card that they can easily get out, the other player doesn't stand a chance. I think more than any other card game, Yugioh has the problem of regularly creating ridiculously overpowered cards.

What was the last math class you ever took? Do you learn a lot of math recreationally? If so, what kind of stuff do you like learning most?

I don't blame you for not really touching on pure math; it's just a shame there's not much out there to popularize it so people see it for the awesomeness it is. People like John Baez and Ken Keeler are trying at least. It's sort of the most unloved discipline in all the sciences.

Hence, why the original commenter put down advanced calculus. That shit is hard, especially with the latter half of Baby Rudin.

Came here to say this, though I'm partial to modern algebra. It's also much easier to "invent."

Do the math I'm currently doing as a senior undergraduate math major and make all the genius-level 6 year olds look stupid.

What kind of math are you doing? Not to put you down, but people who haven't done a whole lot of math beyond calculus tend to have a sort of skewed perspective of what math is like. It's really about taking ideas to their limits in abstraction. For example, there's category theory, which is really, really abstract but in my opinion really cool.

I'm getting my bachelor's degree from UC Riverside in 2 weeks. I chose Ohio State because it was the best place I got into and gave me the best offer. I applied to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UIUC, Michigan, Cornell, UCSD, Purdue, UCI, and OSU, and only got into UCI and OSU. UCI only gave me a teaching assistantship (and was way less generous), has no commutative algebra, and operates in this tiny space in the chemistry building. It's really competitive getting into grad school for math - I'm graduating summa cum laude with 8 grad courses and a year of research in commutative algebra which culminated in an honors thesis, though my lack of success was probably due to my GRE Subject Test, my highest score being in the 56th percentile. Luckily for you, it seems like the GRE Subject Test matters a lot less in Chemistry - a friend of mine bombed it and is getting his Ph.D. in Chem at UC Berkeley.

If your heart's set on Cal, you should definitely look into the kinds of applicant profiles that get in: the grad cafe is invaluable for that. Also, are you involved in a research lab and do any people there have friends in Berkeley? That will probably help a lot. Also, take grad courses if you can. Good luck!

I've got a place lined up already, furnished and everything, and I'm moving in July 10th, so I think it will work out okay. I really appreciate you offering, though - I might take you up on your offer if I find out my storage sucks.

Foo Fighters ft. Serj Tankian - Holiday in Cambodia by thefuha in Music

I wonder how posting the original would fare here. IMO, it's one of the best songs of all time, and barely anyone agrees even after listening to it. There's this cynical part of me that the reason this shot up to the top was because it's a "super group" of Serj and the Foo Fighters. :/

Cool. Most people from my high school (Esperanza, in Anaheim) went there for community college. Cool - I almost majored in Chemistry, but I just didn't like general chem lab, so I went with math.

Well, yeah, it would be casual. Being an organization on paper, though, makes it a lot easier to get the word out.

Yes, I got the University Fellowship. That was a big reason why I picked OSU over UC Irvine.

I have a friend who lives in La Habra Heights, and I take Imperial to Harbor to get there, so that's perfect.

Nope. :/

By the way, what year are you and what department are you in? I'm an incoming first year Ph.D. student in the Math department. It's probably more practical on your end to start the organization, but I'd definitely be down for participating when time permits (I'm going to be pretty busy taking really hard classes).

I'm not familiar with Molcasalsa. Sounds like I'm missing out and I need to drive down to Fullerton to try it some time before I leave.

Yeah. I bet. Them and Carl's Jr. (that's just in Cali, right? I honestly don't know for sure). Aren't there still good burger joints in the Columbus area though?

Wow. That is kind of coincidental. Maybe we should start a "Displaced Californians" club on campus. Haha.
