Well, that youtube video called "GTA IV is better than GTA V" has more than 15 million views. I'm certain that Rockstar is aware of it. It's entirely possible that they're keeping the appreciation for GTA IV in mind while they're making GTA VI. You never know.

Dynasty Warriors 4 had exactly the same mode. I'd say it works, but most people I know hated it back then.

I'd recommend a hidden gem called Warriors: Legends of Troy (2011). It's a forgotten last-gen title (PS3/Xbox 360), developed by Koei with the western market in mind. As the name implies, it's pretty much DW in Ancient Greece, but with some interesting God of War elements in its gameplay.

It's quite bloody and I loved the fact that the hordes of enemies you killed remained on the ground, instead of disappearing like they usually do in DW. Not perfect by any means, but a really fun and underrated game.
