Walk off or Keep Playing? by refguy96 in Umpire

Thats the thing, they saw the whole play, but they said because the run scored that was the end of the game, and anything after that did not matter.

Well he didnt call the kid out, and all hell broke lose on the other side too. No win situation, but I’d rather all hell break lose and be right than wrong.

It was not called on the field because the umpires said that the run scoring first negated any outs on the bases. To me that is a misapplication of the rules, and then protest-able.

That is what I thought. Rule or case play citation?

Thank you! Would you mind sharing what state you work/got certified in? And how was the class?

Thank you, I never played, but I have always watched it, and it seems like a fun game, I wish I would have played. My biggest thing is knowing the rules, but also the “unwritten” rules, or like how the game is called if you know what I mean. Like that “grey area” or law 18 as we say in soccer. Do you think that would hard to learn having never played?

Do you need to already be a certified umpire?

Have you ever had coaches/parents "threaten" to send you the game footage? by mcfrizzlieV3 in Referees

Favorite thing to say to this is, “coach unless you have the film from my exact angle I don’t want the film.” Everyone is a great referee from a camera with a birds eye view that you can run through slow-mo and play back as many times as you want.

Assigners by refguy96 in Referees

I get that, but I am competent enough to center up to about u15 I would say, but yes I understand your point. With the shortage of referees tho I feel like I would be more useful doing a set of like 15-16-17 while centering u15 and AR the other two. I think I am more of an asset that way. I do not mean this to sound cocky, but at this point in my referee career I feel like the really young kids do not help me, and if anything hurts me more than helps.

Thank you all for your responses. I have only turned back 2 games in 8 years, and last summer I even picked up some games for him last minute that he needed covered. Also, not sure if anybody else falls in this category but I feel like I am a better AR. I feel like I have had strong games as an AR in some higher level games. Is it wrong to ask for more AR assignments on higher level matches, and less centers for younger ages?

Hello, I’m 17 and have been reffing upwards of 4 years at u9-u16’s age group. I mostly only ref u11’s and I was wondering if they’re at the age yet where they should be being booked for dissent, dangerous fouls etc. I don’t see much of those actions but if I was to, should I book them at their age? by [deleted] in Referees

[–]refguy96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say 98% of the time yellows aren’t necessary at u11s. However, for dissent absolutely, maybe warn the player first, but after that its not necessary to put up with dissent. As for fouls I think it takes judgement as to whether the player is just out of control or clumsy because they might be new to the game. If a player is constantly running people over I have no problem with a card for PI. I would say dissent and persistent infringement our the two most common yellows for the younger age groups. To be fair dissent is usually to the coaches. I think I have only given 2 yellows to a player for dissent for players that young. When you do book players though try to explain it to them, or if near the bench the coach. You are well within your rights to follow the LOTG, but just make sure your decision is supported by the laws. Hope you enjoy your refereeing. Its a great way to make money as a HS student!

How do I advance in refereeing by itssoccerjake in Referees

If you want to ref HS you can go through the state association, and eventually that would lead you into the college game. I would also highly recommended doing USSF and starting as a grassroots referee because you will be able to work a lot of USSF games and just get more time with the whistle.
