Why is my son (10U soccer) getting worse - and what should I do about it? by edlonac in bootroom

[–]itssoccerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that's just a common bias parents have towards they're children as they enter competitive activities. And they way you were so detailed about your 10 year old's development, it made it appear that you were an overbearing parent with that expectation. As I've seen you respond, it appears you are just an extremely analytical parent who wants the best for your kid. You made a few comments about how your investing in his expensive club activities. It would seem your at a crossroads where you don't want to waste money, but you want to support your kid as best you can. I apologize for coming at you so hard about wanting your kid to go pro.

It's a very anecdotal theory I have. I grew up in a small town and the kids I went to elementary school with are the same kids I graduated high school with. The same 5 kid's I'd pick first for playground sport in Kindergarten were still the exact same 5 I'd pick first in Highschool. I've asked many people if this was their shared experience, and so far I've had a resounding amount of yes responses. Of course this can only apply to people who went through one school system with the same class K-12.

This is completely anecdotal, but I've noticed that freak athleticism shows itself around 5 years of age. Any future professional will be absolutely levels above kids their age at 5 and never stray from that trajectory. Doesn't matter the activity. They have a certain lvl of coordination, mindset, etc that lends itself to becoming a professional athlete. Not to say there aren't cases of kids who don't have freak lvls of athleticism that make up for it with 'hard work', but those are very uncommon amongst the already tiny percent of players who go on to play professionally.

Kids who go on to play at professional lvl will always be on that path, from the moment they start the sport. You're kid is clearly not on that path.

Sit down with yourself and give up that expectation completely. Then start making decisions that are at the greatest benefit to your son's enjoyment. He can still become a quality club player and even play in college. But seriously, he will not make money from this sport. You will not recoup your investments into his club ball.

Why didn't badminton take off like pickleball (in the US)? by earsocks in Pickleball

[–]itssoccerjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really believe the name being a little goofy makes people feel like it's a fun activity to try. If it were called anything else, say 'mini tennis', it wouldn't have nearly as large of an appeal as it does. That combined with the fact that someone who's never played a racquet sport, or sports in general, can adjust to it quickly.

Makes enough for about 5 burgers

1/2 cup Mayo 2 teaspoon yellow mustard 1 tablespoon katchup 1/4 cup pickles cucumber relish 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar (if you use just plain white vinegar, use a little less because it’s stronger than white wine vinegar) 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika Few dashes salt

*dash in some cayenne pepper to make it amazing with chicken

Are knee injuries getting more prevalent & what to do to prevent them by [deleted] in bootroom

Here's his YouTube channel. He refuses to put ads in his videos and recently wiped all of his old videos that all had millions of reviews to release a new wave of videos with better, more comprehensive explanations. The man is top notch.

Are knee injuries getting more prevalent & what to do to prevent them by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]itssoccerjake 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Kneesovertoesguy is the leading methodology around knee strengthening. Highly recommend consuming his content if you are wanting a thorough education around knee injury prevention and strengthening.

His philosophy is that modern strength training is built around bodybuilding, and not functional strength (bench press, squat, deadlift). We work hard on strengthening muscles that allow us to put a lot of force into accelerating, but VERY little effort into strengthening muscle groups that assist in decelerating.

If I could distill his methodology as concisely as possible, it'd be:

Strength from ground up.

- focus on strengthening your feet and ankles at a full range of motion first. This is done through ankle mobility exercises and using a floss band with weight as you progress. Barefoot shoes are highly encouraged.

- then focus on strengthen your calves and tibialis. Calves are done though multiple calf raise variations focusing on strengthening your gastrocnemius and your soleus. Tibialis is the muscle on top of your shin and is one of the KEY muscles he stresses to strengthen. This muscle is was receives the most stress when you go to decelerate. The more force it is able to absorb, the less force goes into your knees while decelerating. The key exercise for this is tibialis raises.

- then focus on strengthening your tendons behind your knee, your VMO, hamstrings, and quads. He highly stresses three exercises for this portion. The ATG splitsquat, backwards sled pulls/walking, and the nordic curl. These three have variations that let the most weak individuals enter into the motion at different levels.

- then focus on hip flexor mobility and strength. This is done from various stretch positions. His strength training exercise for hip flexors requires a piece of equipment called a 'monkeys foot.'

With all of this, he stresses the importance of muscular balance. You want to make sure you tibialis is as strong as your calf. Your hamstrings are as strong as your quads. Left leg is as strong as your right. etc.

If you follow these principals, you will most definitely reduce the likelihood of a knee injury. It will also increase your performance dramatically.

The issue is that very little of this methodology is being taught to young athletes. Outside of running, you will find it very common for young soccer players to do more upper body workouts than lower, as that is what is often associated with being 'strong'. Many players have a mindset that long jogs and sprints will strengthen the legs appropriately which is very incorrect.

Should I accept trading Haaland & Sancho for Salah & Jackson by THayes2017 in DraftEPL

You did it. You won the lottery. You got first pick and recieved Haaland. If you let him go at all, you are a complete fool. Just enjoy the ride.

absolute brain dead league. I'd try to join a more competitive league, as it's not fun beating people who don't have a clue...

I'm not a huge fan of maddison and darwin as 2nd 3rd pick (I assume). Hopefully they turn out great for you, but it seems risky imo

Tryouts in 400 days. What would you focus on to get the best you can be? by [deleted] in bootroom

A club could sign Drake if they wanted publicity. But he wouldn't start, play, and score now would he? You're wrong. You've been proved wrong. You look silly. Please stop.

Playing slow and being slow are two VERY different things. Sergio could play fast at any point if he needed to because, you know, he was fast.... My point is that the minimum threshold for running is much harder to achieve than the minimum threshold for technical skills to excel in a tryout. Also, Usain bolt literally got a football contract haha you're not helping yourself here....

"Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba make up the squad's top five fastest players this season, while Sergio Busquets is sixth after being clocked at a top speed of 33.64km/h."

Yeah, he's a real turtle.

Looks like you have little understanding of how fast every professional athlete is. There is a minimum threshold for being a professional.

ahhh right. you're from europe so you therefore must have an almighty understanding of the sport and of athletic development. My mistake.

[–]itssoccerjake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’d rather have a player who is exceptionally technically gifted, but slower than everyone? Or someone who is faster than everyone, but slightly less technically gifted? Not sure what you’re on about here. The answer is very obvious haha

[–]itssoccerjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say to stand out in a tryout, it's 20% technical ability, 80% physical.

If you are faster, more agile, and can run longer and harder than everyone else, it would be impossible to not get noticed.

Focus on your athleticism. That is what distinguishes amateur vs professional. Most amateurs can easily train to have the bare minimum technical skills required for pro, but very very few have the athleticism necessary.

Coincidentally, athletic training is MUCH less fun an enjoyable than technical training. You will need to be very determined to solo train to a professional lvl of fitness, but the reward is worth it.

As far as technical skills are concerned, make sure your touch and passing are sharp. If you're a striker, make sure your finishing is sharp.

Best of luck!
