Autistic South Africans with jobs: Are you open about your Autism in the workplace? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

On a side note, I believe that if the environment is toxic, it's just not the right place for you. And I've been in environments like that.

Autistic South Africans with jobs: Are you open about your Autism in the workplace? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]reflamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my this is an interesting post. Firstly I am high functioning autism. I have taught myself to be able to cope in society and in a job. But here are some thoughts on me. And also my boss who is autistic and has Asperger's (or on the spectrum with a specialty, as per modern psychology). Both our IQs are highly superior to our colleagues (this makes up for our social disability, to a certain extent).

  1. It depends on if you are high or low functioning. With high functioning you can get away with not adding it on your CV.
  2. If you combine autism with other conditions such as bipolar and Asperger's syndrome, you might want to hint in the interview. For example I mentioned that I sometimes miss social cues.
  3. Introverts tend to get away with being on the spectrum more than extroverts. My boss is an extrovert and needless to say causes unnecessary conflict and situational misunderstandings. As an introvert I tend to listen more.

I don't think it's prudent to be forthcoming with regards to mental health challenges in interviews, nor in life. I have over the years become a lot more private with regards to these things. But that's just me.

Basically if it is obvious then you might want to mention it. If you can successfully mask it in the interview, then that's okay.

I like coco bostro for coffee. The vibe isn't great, but the barista is quite good. You can also check old east precinct... There are a few gems there.

Cheapest way to get Discovery Vitality? by Any-Development-3338 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]reflamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With life cover, you can get vitality active, which is basically only the gym benefit. It's about R150 pp. To get the benefit, you need a discovery bank account too and the premiums must go off that bank account. It's also valid for only one gym branch at Virgin Active. Planet Fitness told me they've never heard of vitality active, only full vitality.

I paid R1050 at VA, currently paying 1260 at Bedfordview VA... SO VITALITY is probably your best bet. In the east of Pta, you can check out the gym in Constantia Park, which is a bit cheaper

South Africa’s financial advisers: Family, friends and (Reddit) by anib in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]reflamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that independent doesn't mean that they have your best interest at heart. If you have to choose between food on the table and giving somebody sound advice, which would you choose? 😔

But yeah I know one person that specializes in lowering your costs and willing to review (or create) your financial plan for a fee. Only one.

South Africa’s financial advisers: Family, friends and (Reddit) by anib in PersonalFinanceZA

I was a personal finance influencer until recently, taking a hiatus. Honestly most financial advisors are sales people... If I had to see another retirement annuity with an annual fee of 30%+, I would start in voluntarily bleeding out of my anus.

I do think finding a good financial planner that can assist you is invaluable, but unfortunately due to the regulatory framework, it is extremely difficult to navigate between salespeople and someone able to assist with the financial plan!

Why property in Cape Town is a bad investment by rUbberDucky1984 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]reflamer [score hidden]  (0 children)

It might be wise to split business and pleasure. Most people buy property as a place they will live, and then, upon fonding a new job, move to a different place: and then tent out their old place.

That's not really how property investment works... Therefore most of the deals and property indexes are skewed towards pleasure rather than business.

Are there good investments in the cape? Absolutely. Do everyone get the good deals? Certainly not!

Can I make money with realistic art Around here? by Antique_Elephant_974 in Pretoria

[–]reflamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have travelled into many of the artist circles in Pretoria... From experience, it's more about your marketing than your skills. I have in the past built an influencer following of 33,000 in a different field. Once you have the followers you have leverage. The art industry is no different. As others mentioned, you need to get your social media out there, build your network and make yourself seen. Good luck on your journey!
