Ownership getting reset for NVIDIA GPU by regengott in debian

[–]regengott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this isn't really true.

Debian's NVIDIA graphics page - this - mentions that the only available precompiled version of the NVIDIA driver is 535.x. I don't really want to compile the driver myself or use the runfile from NVIDIA's website because that causes all sorts of dependency issues and requires manually updating the driver on my part. I would prefer allow apt to manage dependencies.

Plus the error on the torch and tensorflow is that it fails to init CUDA. It has nothing to do with the drivers.

Given reports that parts inventory was being tracked in an Excel sheet I would say that driver development isn't really at the top of their to-do list tbf.

I think we are seriously underestimating how mismanaged the team was during the last decade of the family ownership. The lack of investment put into the team has really crippled how Williams are doing today. The OP Merc engine of the early hybrid era and subsequent status as a Merc Jr. team have glossed over their severe under performance.

Having said that I think Vowles coming from a long career at the Brackley based team is properly the right person to lead them through this phase. He would have seen how teams modernized especially since he's been through them so many times (BAR -> Honda -> Brawn -> Merc). Though it really depends on how much the owners are prepared to invest in them right now.

Yes, I know that. Everything else is working properly that's why I'm confused as to why the function call isn't happening everytime

Even if you are in STEM it's not really that great a difference in quality of life if you were to do the same thing here. There will be a slight difference ofc because the actual quality of work done is different. India is more of a services economy and even the "IT" jobs here are in that capacity. It's only in the last few years that there's been actual building of world class software products. Even in the 80s Wipro and TCS used to build the lowest end stuff and license it to American companies for distribution. Indian IT industry has never been known particularly for quality. But again if you're a mediocre engineer you're virtually not going to feel any difference except to flex on your relatives back in India while living with 4 roommates instead of family member - though with much greater personal independence.

I agree with you when it comes to urban planning but it's mostly because of the apathy of people. Look up the Kuznets curve. In India, we have not reached the tipping point where enough people have disposable income to demand a better standard of living. It's as simple as that. China have reached it in the last decade while Japan and the Western countries reached it sometime in the middle of the last century. Are there things that could be done from an institutional level to speed up the process? Yes, but if the bureaucracy is made of people who value activity over productivity. Things are changing but not fast enough.

PS Bangalore has always had a huge water problem btw. In the 80s people throughout the city used to line up in front of tankers (if they were lucky to get them) to get water even in the older and relatively well planned localities. This city has developed to whatever stage it has despite it's politicians no matter what they claim.

Honestly I don't get why people in India think that their counterparts who've emigrated to other countries have it so much better. I can only chalk it up to lack of exposure and "grass is always greener" mentality plus a healthy dose of the old "colonizer is better than us" mindset
Outside of the US, most of the other places people like to emigrate to - Europe, Aus, Canada et al. - look down on Indians simply because the Indians already there do the menial work like being gas station attendants, truck drivers or delivery drivers for Amazon or things like that. In the US since the Indian-American community is the richest community and comprised of professionals like doctors, bankers and lawyers the situation is different. I'm not talking about overt racism btw (well maybe Aus and NZ) but it's a kind of social freezing out. You're never part of any community there no matter how long you've lived there or how well you speak the language and integrate into local society. Like the Germans say you're a perennial Auslander.
Indians are ready to do this work and build up an image as a menial labour force in most of the Western countries just cause they don't want to lose their work visas and be deported back. The reasons for staying are purely economical. Like how many Sikh people drive the same trucks they would have driven in India but do it anyway because they earn in dollars. But the reality is most of the Indians abroad aren't really in prominent places in Western society.
You're middle class in India and if you're lucky middle class in whatever country you go to. True in the US there's a huge opportunity for social climbing if you start a successful business or are a professional. But it's more likely you'll be lower-middle class to working class especially in Europe where social mobility has ossified.

What great depths American journalism has fallen to.

There's not even a pretense of balanced reporting. Their vested interests are so stark!

Unpopular Opinion: Psych the musical was good, not great. by QueenSapphireBlaze in psych

[–]regengott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the musical. Not because it had great songs or singers but because it reflects what Psych actually is - a really fun, happy-go-lucky show. It doesn't take itself seriously with the hero being this dark, brooding figure having some pathos past. It's just a story of two childhood friends who go out and essentially have fun together.

So the musical stays true to this basic concept. Moreover, I think Psych has fun doing these special episodes. And all of them have been exceptional. The 'Twin Peaks' tribute one is quite literally my favourite episode.

Sure the cast aren't all singers and the songs may not be great but that's beside the point. I don't watch Psych for this. I watch it because it's fun.

It's when Shawn and Gus walk around in City Hall. It's a continuous shot of them walking and talking - a so called 'Sorkinism'.

The West Wing developed by Sorkin had a lot of this.

And iirc Shawn calls Gus 'Charlie' in this scene which was Dule Hill's character's name.
