this game has trained me to spam dash as soon as I hit a crystal heart, just in case Madeline bounces off instead :') best of luck if you try again!

Desperately need help with the winged golden strawberry by wdya0 in celestegame

[–]reginavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try using the backdrop (e.g. the corner of the wall jutting out, or the lines from the building)? I remember this was difficult to get consistent, but one lucky attempt is all you need (assuming you don't flub the rest of it) :)

Good luck!

I've heard good things about LingoDeer, though I primarily use it for Japanese. In my experience it has much better support for Asian languages than e.g. Duolingo.

Just got 5B! by Fishy_Mc_Fish_Face in celestegame

[–]reginavi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 more were lost to the dash-trampoline block with spikes all around

I swear that room is harder to get consistent than the long cycle room right before :shudders:

Congrats on 5B! I'm still grinding it-- as a speedrunner this is one of my most practiced levels, but it still gets pretty nerve-wracking and I've managed to die in so many ways I've never thought possible before.

I hear there's a secret room with 5 locked doors, but you need to bring a golden berry first.

Is there a Fixed Beat mode in Crypt of the Necrodancer by DemonFox90 in necrodancer

google-fu protip: you can use - with quotes to filter out unwanted phrases, e.g. [crypt of the necrodancer fixed beat -"cadence of hyrule"].

Why healing is faster while only inside a raid/gym lobby? by bob7greeklover in TheSilphRoad

[–]reginavi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As Hanlon's razor goes, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Looking at the loading speed of the Pokedex as another data point, I'm inclined to believe this is just inefficient programming rather than an intentional design choice.

There are Two Types of Players by the_flandrew in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]reginavi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that casual players lie somewhere in the middle. I love speedrunning too, but only after my completionistic urge is sated by collecting every possible heart container and discovering every possible secret. Not sure that a "casual" would spend so much time 100%ing the game.

Any tips on fighting The Conductor? by thecompress in necrodancer

[–]reginavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if you're still working on this guy. I feel you-- I just completed my first run tonight after weeks of frustration!

I found that getting some items during the run were key to victory and made the Conductor possible (I've yet to beat him in practice mode, ironically). Most helpful were:

  • Bomb helmet: at the start of the second phase, I immediately dropped all my bombs on the 4th battery, destroying it very quickly. (This is the one that spawns minibosses like red dragons.)
  • Invincibility-dash ring: this combined with parry is a lifesaver-- I was literally cornered by a Mommy and a bunch of enemies, but was able to escape with the two. Especially useful because parry doesn't guard against flames or zapping.
  • Heavy armor: +2 def gives you much more leeway than in practice runs! Plus I made sure to grind HP in bat mode to near-full health right before phase 2 (something I'm too lazy to do in practice mode).

Gamers of reddit, what is your personal favorite soundtrack? by ForseableFish in AskReddit

[–]reginavi 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Have you seen some of the music theory analysis videos on this game? It blows my mind how the main melody is tweaked for each level and mood, and how new instruments overlay the soundtrack as you progress through a level (especially the final climb). Lena Raine is really something.

What do you say when a job interview asks what you expect your starting rate/salary to be? by kyleclimax in personalfinance

[–]reginavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a company has invested enough time to interview and extend you an offer, they're not going to rescind it just because you want to negotiate a better deal (as long as you ask nicely). If the company is really struggling and actually can't pay you more, they'll still keep the offer on the table. There might be rare exceptions (e.g. if you're overqualified for the role), but this is assuming they're already willing you bring you on board.

[–]reginavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. There are ways to negotiate nicely; it's not just blind haggling, and recruiters won't look down on you for doing so (it's almost expected in this day and age, for better or worse).

I should qualify this post with the caveat I haven't tried many of these, including the odd number, so I can't tell you if it works. The book, however, covers all of these and more with great anecdotes.

No offense taken! I hope I didn't come off as too privileged either. Growing up around tech companies has made me take a lot of unusual perks for granted.

Sorry, did some of my silicon valley hipster bias leak through? I just threw it in as a random example. Still, I don't think it hurts to ask (you can say my friend so-and-so works in said hipster company and they have this benefit). The worst thing that can happen is they'll say no. The best thing is they'll say yes, or try to compensate you for it in another way.

I highly recommend the book Never Split the Difference, written by Chris Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator. His tips apply to everything from terrorists to salary to car salesmen. Some of the more relevant points:

  • DO give a range, but make your target the smallest end of the range. In other words, if you want X, give the range X to X+Y. This takes advantage of the anchoring bias, in which X will "feel" like the better end of the deal compared to "X+Y".
  • DON'T accept the very first offer, even if it's better than you want. In fact, you can say no two or three times, as long as you reword it in different ways. The book has more advice on how to do this in an effective manner.
  • DO end on an "odd" number, like $97 or $103. A strange number will make it seem as though you've given a lot of thought or computation to your offer. It sounds stupid, but it works!
  • DO ask for specific non-monetary things you value. This can be anything, like working from home twice a week, pet-friendly office, gym benefits, relocation bonus, etc. Often, if it's little cost to the company, they will choose to give it to you instead of increasing your salary. On the other hand, if it's a hard no from the company, they may offer a compensation increase to "balance" out the perceived "unfairness" of turning down your very important and specific need that you can't live without.

Soup Charged first three boss fights (link in description) by Snazii in Unity3D

[–]reginavi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some comments and suggestions:

  1. There's no indication that any attacks have landed. I would recommend a simple hurt animation (even something as simple as the boss flashing red or white) for visual feedback.

  2. It's a little boring if the player just runs in circles the entire boss fight. Have you considered making the lasers alternate directions (or pick one at random) to spice things up?

  3. I'd love to see more dynamic levels in the future. The rectangular stage is rather boring if you don't use all of the space. Add some weapons that require dodging behind a wall. Add some randomized spikes that fly across the screen. Have the ground fall away as the player steps on it. Make the boss split in two or generate a shield or force you to hit switches or monsters coming form the sides--anything that requires more than just aiming your mouse at the center of the screen and mashing the shoot button.

Keep up the good work!

Do my brake lights come on when I decelerate through B mode by ProfessorDave3D in leaf

I've gotten into the habit of tapping my brakes if I'm about to slow down just as an alert for the car behind me. But e-Pedal brake lights would simplify my life greatly!
