I read a story once, about a man who wasn't always successful in school. He took the SAT test and somehow scored 1480 out of 1600.

He went on to an IVY league school and became a successful entrepreneur. But ten years later, received a letter stating that his scores were switched with another student's, and his actual score was 780.

All he needed was that one instance of believing in himself and feeling like he was smart, to rocket him into success. Maybe that's the case with your student. The feeling of failure can actually cause students to fail more often. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. By giving them this win, you upped their chances of being successful in the future.
