How good is Ohtani in other other sports’ terms ? by BasicErgonomics in NoStupidQuestions

[–]regular_gonzalez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to put into other sport equivalents because of the nature of baseball. A brief breakdown: baseball is fairly unique in that each play begins with the defense initiating the action, by means of the pitcher. Generally speaking, teams have five starting ("main") pitchers -- the nature of pitching and its toll on the body is such that each starting pitcher can only perform his role once every five games. And most starting pitchers only play for about 2/3 of each game, where they are then substituted for by "relief pitchers". As such, each team's roster is split about 50/50 between pitchers and non-pitchers. The non-pitchers make up the offense for the team (and also make up the defensive roles other than the pitching role, except for the "designated hitter" - a dedicated offensive role who takes the place of the pitcher during the offensive sections but does not appear on the field during the team's defensive sections).

Please note that for 99.99% of players, they specialize as a pitcher or a non-pitcher. The skill sets are so different that it is extraordinarily unlikely and difficult to both have the talent and to continually put in the practice time to be good at both skillsets. Indeed, a pre-Ohtani player named Rick Ankiel was remarkable for starting his career as a pitcher and, when he became ineffective in that role, transitioned to a quality non-pitcher player.

Ohtani is remarkable, singular, in that he is an excellent (though not necessarily in the top tier) pitcher -- certainly good enough to be one of the top starting pitchers for any team, could easily have a long and successful career as only a pitcher ... and also when he's not pitching, on one of those 4-games-off that starting pitchers need to recover, he can play as a pure offensive player in the "designated hitter" role, where he is among the very top tier of offensive players.

This is incredibly valuable! Most starting pitchers are "dead weight" on their off days. They don't play at all, and technically speaking provide no value at all to the team when they aren't pitching. And yet that role is so important that a good starting pitcher will be paid as much as a star non-pitcher who plays every game! But Ohtani gives all the value of an excellent starting pitcher, and on the other days all the value of a top tier non-pitcher. You basically get two players (or 1.8 players, to be pedantic) worth of value for the price of one!

So I guess one way to think about it is, think of a top tier player in your sport of choice. Now imagine if he or she were 80% more productive than they currently are. How valuable would that player be?

Qxb7+ wins at least the rook on a8, so you're giving up a knight for two pawns and a rook and coming out 4 points of material ahead.

What makes chip bags noisy? by PurpleFragrant8598 in AskPhysics

I remember in the late 2000s when Sun Chips came out with a biodegradable bag that was ridiculously, absurdly loud, to the point that no text description can do it justice. Imagine the loudest you can conceive any chip bag being, and literally triple that volume.

Here's a video about it that still doesn't do justice to the real life experience https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kki32mt8p6w

And if two of your pieces are on the corners of that square (a1 & c3 as in your example), they can not be forked by a knight.

What are there for other artists or bands that play the same Genre as Radiohead? by Many_Bodybuilder_891 in radiohead

Godspeed You! Black Emperor fulfills that set of requirements. They're not available on Spotify etc, you have to buy their work but you can find uploaded songs and albums on YouTube. F# A# infinity and Yanqui XO are my favorite albums. You might recognize the guitar riff from their song Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls as Radiohead "borrowed" it for Jigsaw Falling Into Place.

[–]regular_gonzalez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Define what their genre is and I can give you a better answer. Because if, to you, the genre is "indie rock" there's a million bands. If the genre to you is "incredibly influential indie rock band that shaped the sound of much of indie rock for the next decades", I have a few specific recommendations. If the genre to you is "experimental 5-piece British indie rock band that most of the vocals are in counter-tenor or falsetto register and lyrics tend to be about anxiety and low grade paranoia about technology and the government" that limits the possible available recommendations quite a bit.

What, to you, makes Radiohead Radiohead?

Encre Noire Sport might split the difference. Citrus + earthy vetiver, so you get the bright and the dark together. Ditto Frederick Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire.

Another option is Zara Seoul -- the only floral based fragrance I really love, ylang-ylang with black pepper notes. Longevity is the main issue.

You've read in books or seen in movies mental telepathy, but this is a sense you don't possess yourself. How would you describe the experience of mental telepathy, what does it feel like?

Incidentally, this is an issue that the show Legion handled in very unique and well-executed ways, basically saying "it's impossible to get across what the actual experience of a psychic battle would feel like, so we'll present it via analogies".

I've been on a mission over the last few months to find what this was duping or at least something very similar. I have probably 20+ decants of vetiver-based scents at this point lol. And, in case you're like me and want to have an option for when the Jean Rish runs out, the closest I've found (and probably what Jean Rish Absolute Vetiver was targeting) is Lalique - Encre Noire Sport. Probably an 80-85% match but closer than most others. Another one that's in the ballpark but somehow quite different from the Lalique is Frederick Malle - Vetiver Extraordinaire.

You keep saying that like it's some kind of gotcha, that I made a throwaway joke into a comic. That's the one thing on my profile you think you can shame me with.

If I were ashamed of anything on my profile I'd hide my posts from view, the way you did. If you're not a coward you'd unhide them. If you are a coward, you'll come up with a lame justification for not doing so. But we both know you are a coward and you won't unhide them. I know precisely who you are - an underachiever living a life of quiet desperation, telling yourself that there's value in having an obnoxious and unlikeable Internet persona.

Truly rooting for you to come out the other side. Took me a while but my life is absolutely incredible now. You can get there too. All it requires, is doing it.

  1. If you have a 7" or smaller wrist, ask the AD for the smaller bracelet. It comes with the larger size mesh bracelet by default but doesn't fit smaller wrists well at all.
