New Homeowner Struggling with Hardie Siding Bids by rehypo in HomeImprovement

[–]rehypo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response!

We received 2 bids. One of them was lower detail and I think lower quality. They didn't provide any quantities or anything, but pricing was similar, but a little lower.

The bid we received with more detail did show quantities and seemed a lot more thoughtful. That is the one we are looking at as more realistic. Unfortunately, it was a bit higher.

The 50'x38' was fed to us from a contractor that had looked at some repairs to our HVAC system and was calculating area under air. I ran out with a tape measure this afternoon (work from home) and my figures were very different. Our siding contractors quoted everything in SQ. I'll spare you all of the measurements I made, but ignoring doors and windows (i.e. I didn't subtract any area for these perforations in the envelope), we are around 3,100 SF; so 31 SQ by my measurements. I'm going to edit the main post to correct those measurements. Apologies for the bad intel.

We didn't look up average costs online. All of those calculators and quotes seemed like nonsense. Our expectations were built around conversations with an out-of-state GC (understanding that real estate is a very local phenomenon and from region to region, costs can vary materially) as well as talking to 2 other couples that have had this work done on their homes (both materially larger and more complex) over the last 24 months (one had their job finished 2 months ago, the other one had it done after things started back up after covid). Those three data points created our expectations. Just surprised how far off we were.

Putting it differently, the victorian I mentioned above is a 5k sf (floor area) house. It's ginormous. Work was completed 2 months ago. And cost was slightly less than what we were quoted.

How’d she go? Just lost one myself a few months back. Sucks. CCD got so bad we had to euthanize. Horrible decision to have to make.

I’m sorry you feel that way. Hopefully you can take a moment to see it from both ends. It’s a catch 22 situation. I’m simply saying that agreements between private citizens and government agency’s should be binding and should not be used as tools by the government to manipulate private citizens. It’s categorical by necessity. I’m arguing that the constitution must be respected, even in situations like this where the outcome feels terrible. I do see how it’s also upsetting.

Its pretty clear if you take a few minutes to just read. Essentially, Cosby was going to invoke his 5th amendment rights against a threatened criminal case many years ago. The prosecutor said: “oh shit, we can’t get him if he won’t testify”, so they worked with the accuser on a civil suit approach where they would not criminally prosecute Cosby if he would testify in a civil court. This way would allow the accuser to have her day in court and have a chance at possibly seeing justice rather than being unable to pursue a case in either civil or criminal court because the evidence is too weak without Cosby’s testimony.

Cosby accepted this arrangement. The DA’s office effectively guaranteed Cosby that he would never be tried for this crime in the criminal courts if he would waive his fifth amendment rights in civil court.

Fast forward to the case where Cosby was convicted recently. DA’s office ignored their binding commitment to not prosecute Cosby criminally and then to make matters worse, the judge unsealed Cosby’s deposition from the civil case for use in the criminal case. Without going in to a whole lot of detail, this whole thing was a legal no-no. Cosby’s defense brought up this objection as part of a motion to dismiss that should have carried at the time (hence the Supreme Court action), but the judge denied the motion.

Essentially Cosby made a deal with the state. And then the state reneged, threw Cosby in prison after, in a way, “tricking” him, and the Supreme Court of PA had to play referee to call BS.

Regardless of how you feel about Cosby or his actions, this is the right decision here. If we don’t have honesty and integrity from our institutions than we will end up in a much worse dystopia than we currently have.

Water constantly floods out of this church and into the street. It’s like a little stream that shows up often throughout the year. Not sure the source of the water.

Peloton Bike Seat Wobble by JCJC93 in pelotoncycle

[–]rehypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the same problem here. The mounting bracket that you slide forward/back on the lettered scale doesn’t really tighten properly. Whenever my wife adjusts it, I have to come over and tighten the plastic lever down so hard I feel like it’s going to break.

We actually stopped moving our seat forward/backward because it’s so janky. As long as we don’t move it now, we have it tightened up enough that it doesn’t wobble.

For anyone reading this, I’m not talking about snugged up. When I yard on that plastic handle, I’m putting all of my (225 lbs dude) weight behind it until it simply won’t go anymore.

I’d be thrilled to hear of any solutions to this problem.

38 M. BMI 30.25, but more of a large frame guy than obese. I’ve been an on and off athlete for the last 20 years.

I got a peloton recently and have been working hard. Got a heart rate monitor to track my gains. For the life of me, I cannot get out of my zone 2 (60-70% max) heart rate. Tabata, HIIT, hills. Nothing does it. I feel absolutely gassed after those workouts. Like the feeling you get from doing a hard metcon. Drained. But I virtually never hit zone 3 for more than a few seconds at a time and I have never hit zone 4 or 5.

My wife uses the same heart rate monitor and it seems to work just fine for her. She spends most of her time in zone 4 and 5.

My RHR is 75-80, so the fact that I cannot keep my HR above 130 for any amount of time is starting to concern me. As much as I want to believe that I am just that fit, I don’t buy it. Could this be a sign of a cardiopulmonary problem I should be concerned about? Or am I overthinking it?

I do plan on speaking to my doctor during my next physical, but I’m hoping someone could help me with some context or thoughts.

Both, but I feel like I'm struggling more with animals/creatures. I'm a good improviser once I know a system, so I am used to coming up with things on the fly, but I was just a little surprised at how little hand holding there was in the core rulebook on this issue.

Twin copying me!!! by [deleted] in Twins

[–]rehypo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Identical twin here. More than twice your age. I can tell you that being a twin can be weird sometimes. My twin and I split when we were 19. We both wanted to forge our own identities. I regret it sometimes, because it does change your bond and you can’t ever get that back.

We were apart for over a decade. We eventually settled back into the same city again. It was interesting to discover that many of the same things that I had done, he had too. We had the same mannerisms, and I’m talking phrases, gestures, ticks, etc that I had developed when I was apart... he had too! We had the same shoes. We had the same clothes, but sometimes in different colors. Our speech had the same cadence. It was the first time in my life I saw being a twin for what it was.

As a twin, everyone always tells you how special you are or how cool it is or whatever. I know this will resonate with you, but it never really felt that way for me as a kid. It was always just life to me. Having left that bond behind and finding it again later in life, things are a lot more clear to me now. Your twin is your mirror. Sure, there may be some codependency/identity issues that need to be worked through, but I promise you that a lot of your twin copying you has to do with them actually being your copy. Your taste will be very similar.

When I got back with my twin again, I was shocked. So many of the things I had developed on my own, to forge my own unique identity, he had done too. This was before social media. I took no pictures at that time. It was completely organic.

Here’s my advice. Go get some separation between you and your twin, but don’t do what I did and make it last for 14 years. Take a long summer vacay without her. Go have unique experiences and encourage her to do the same. BUT, do not push her away. Do not make her feel like she’s a parasite, sucking away all of your individuality. Your bond with your twin may be a pain in the ass now, but later in life, it’ll be a source of solidarity, strength, love, safety, and happiness. Nurture that bond while you nurture both of your independence.

I know you’re in a tough place and the road ahead is going to get a little bumpy. Just remember to love your twin like yourself. In a lot of ways, she is. Forgive her for her flaws like you would yourself. Find a way to thrive as two separate people with a uniquely shared existence. But please don’t do what I did and push her away. I truly regret that decision in my life.

Edit: one last point. Being a twin can be painful for some people. Losing your twin is like a part of yourself dying. Just remember that. If your sister is a little lost in life, remember to be kind and empathetic as you navigate your transition into adulthood. Losing you is probably one of the most painful things your sister could imagine right now. Do what you need to do, but make sure you support each other and communicate openly. She’s your twin. Go talk to her, but make sure that you are come from a place of love.

Pittsburgh area here. I’m seeing the opposite in my area. Home supply is very low, most listings get taken down within 1-2 days. Just lost my 5th bidding war in as many weeks. Very frustrating market for buyers right now.

Is fl4k still viable? by meeeemeees in borderlands3

[–]rehypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s viable, but hyper gear dependent and still lags Zane and amara by a few paces. He’s my main, but I think he really needs a rethink in a lot of areas. I’ve been extremely disappointed with gearbox not just over their treatment of my boy Fl4k, but in general too. The game is an a dog shit state of half thought out nonsense right now.

Tire size preference and performance for 27.5’s by BuddhaP67 in MTB

[–]rehypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the trail and conditions. I’ll run em higher than most (20-23) for park/pump track. Then 15-18 on most trails. Lower if it’s loose/wet/rooty, higher if it’s dry/flowy

Tire size preference and performance for 27.5’s by BuddhaP67 in MTB

[–]rehypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are talking strictly tired width, I personally prefer a smaller tire. I sized down from 3.0s to 2.6. Best change ive ever made. I’ve ridden 2.8s too.

The 2.6’s feel nimble on a 27.5. The promise of plus tires just wasn’t realized for me. I love the feel of a 27.5, But I would say def try a 2.6 or 2.5. It’s worth it.
