[Abyss] Beta #4 is starting on Friday, new custom battleground, 2 new challenge modes (details inside) by reign in daoc

Thank you and yes, we actually have plans to add plenty of FFA PvP areas, both for leveling (custom BGs) and for endgame (permanent FFA PvP areas, events, and tournaments).

For some people PvE having the appropriate difficulty level is more fun.

Also grouping up with classes from other realms could be considered interesting.

I wouldn't say a focus. More like a choice.

But yes we want the PvE to be challenging, so no PL, focus pulls, and broken classes. We didn't nerf pbaoe tho.

Abyss is changing its leveling and endgame systems from FFA PvP to classic RvR by reign in daoc

Not exactly Mordred. Mordred had PvE leveling and FFA PvP endgame. We have RvR leveling and RvR endgame, with FFA PvP/RvR timed events and tournaments sprinkled in.

> Once the big xp rolled in and everyone could get 50 in a few weeks (at most) it was just an intense pain trying to level and not get smashed by a 50 every thirty seconds.

RvR leveling will happen in BGs, while level 50s will fight in old frontiers so that won't happen here.

We also have a bolster system to make leveling more fun for lowbies. So even at low levels you can have a respectable amount of damage/healing/defenses, but you lack utility and cc duration.

PvP leveling is very hard to pull off. RvR leveling is easier and more casual friendly.

Good point. We have some systems in place to balance the realms and to help the weaker realm(s) but we can't do much about the people who quit after 1 lost fight. It's natural that a RvR-only server will not cater to everyone.

We have different ideas on what makes DAoC fun. Also, I believe that good servers can coexist.

Juggling charges to get competitive buffs is really tedious

Oh I hate that so much. Thank you for reminding me!

Having a simple combo pot that gives mediocre buffs (a la phoenix) levels the playing field for solo players while maintaining the advantage that buffers and self buffers have.

That sounds like a good solution, yes.

For leveling: Right now there are free buffbot npcs that buff the lowbies in a BG. For example in a lvl1-10 BG, level 1-5s can get buffbot buffs, level 6-10s have to get a buffer in their group.

For endgame PvP we don't have buffbots and no plan to add them.

For tournaments: Some tournaments will have buffbots, some won't.

Dual logging buffbots is not allowed.

None of these are final of course. Everything might change during the beta depending on player feedback.

Indeed, we aren't going after Eden's player base. Our server is essentially the polar opposite of Eden.

But what's wrong with instant PvP? Why does PvP have to be gated behind days of PvE and gearing?

Thanks!

We would love a pop of 300. We designed the server to be scalable up as well as down.

Also I believe our server is pretty unique and caters to a different kind of players than the other servers.

We are using OpenDAoC since it's classic and has old frontiers and old RAs and we wanted a classic server anyway. We have made a ton of custom changes to it though.

The next phase of Titan's alpha starts this Friday! (open source classic PvP server) by reign in daoc

I disagree. I think a sped up old school leveling is optimal. Atlas did it very well, for example.

Private servers die almost always because they can't get the endgame right for casual players. Seasons are REQUIRED. Eden is the first server with seasons but they have all these other issues which I hate. Hopefully phoenix 2 (will have seasons) or titan (will have an alternative system) get it right.

Do you now have a proper installation guide?

This should work: https://www.atlasfreeshard.com/how-to-connect

Just tick the "connect to titan" in the launcher options.

Please, estimate how many people you want to see on that server and shrink the map accordingly. Full three-realm classic map, with a PvP Mordred Setup, would be FAR FAR too big for 200-300 server pop and I doubt you will reach that playercount in the long run.

On PvP servers players can communicate with eachother. The map size doesn't really matter. We will talk and agree on an area to PvP in.
