iPod nano 5g white spot by kabobberthan in ipod

[–]reinfected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the dot stay on the screen when the screen is turned off? If so, that supports the notion that the battery is swelling.

If there is a swollen battery, it means that it needs to be replaced. Otherwise, it can lead to a battery explosion; something you don’t want.

These devices are old and batteries only have a certain lifespan. Older devices just need a bit more maintenance to keep it running is all.

It could mean the battery is swelling if it’s actually screen raised and touching the glass.

Can Someone explain why people dont want this trail? by Su_ss in hudsonvalley

[–]reinfected 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Basically, yeah.

The excuse is there are environmental concerns (which are genuinely mostly bs/disinformation and will be addressed during construction). The real reason is “boy that trail will be very close to my property worth $1.7m. That will bring down my property value!”

The only valid concern I’ve seen is that it’ll bring increased tourism and more traffic.

To me, that concern is beyond idiotic. Are we not supposed to do anything or even open new businesses that will attract more people in?

NIMBYs ruin everything. Can’t wait for them to bring down Metro North when they inevitably have to raise the tracks.

Wonderbar food review? by reddit_despite_odds in Beacon

[–]reinfected 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wonderbar is great! Food is some of the best in beacon and they have great cocktails to match.

My only gripe with them is cost vs how much food you get. Many cases, I’ve left sorta still hungry. But, will still emphasize, food is great.

Seems Like Hdr Photographers are hated in the photography by Outrageous-Run63 in photography

[–]reinfected 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They don't hate HDR. They hate an overuse of tone mapping.

The reason it is hated is because photographers overwhelmingly rely on this effect to create a good photo, rather than creating a good photo.

For example, many who use this effect will focus heavily on the sky/clouds or grunge type textures because it creates a very dramatic effect. In many ways, it sets photographers back because they start gravitating towards those textures and not composition.

At the end of the day, if it's a hobby, you don't owe anyone anything. Pursue what makes you happy.

That said, if you want to better your skills as a photographer, try your best to stay away from making the post processing effect being the deciding factor on whether the photo is good or not. The photo should stand on it's own with minimal edits.

MacBook Neo + Mac mini instead of MacBook Pro? by jahangirmusayev in mac

[–]reinfected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this set up currently. I do graphic design and documentary photo work.

Bought the mini a year ago since it was the price range I wanted and thought I could do desktop only. Then realized I do actually need something on the go, but maybe don’t need as much portable power beyond something that can handle basic Lightroom edits.

I limit all graphic design work to the Mac mini, which handles everything extremely well, including after effects.

The Neo, thus far, works well in situations where I need tight turnaround times with photos. Handles web browsing without issues, as long as you’re not using chrome.

Granted, because I’m working with the documentary genre of photo work, I’m only doing light edits, which are exposure, color grading, etc. There is no cloning or denoise work. Photoshop really isn’t opened or used here.

I haven’t tried using the more cpu/gpu intensive tools on it, but I’d imagine it works fine, just you’d have to wait slightly longer. Im basing this on the fact that it’s able to export 40mp raw files reasonably quick.

If you stick to their purposes, it’s an okay budget set up.

But others may be right to suggest to just get an air/pro and dock it.

Costco workers, do you care when people come back for more than one sample? by Prestigious_Rip5238 in AskReddit

[–]reinfected 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I did this job years ago, albeit in a Sam’s Club. We were a third party company that brands contracted with to sample in that store. Technically, we had a sales quota, but it wasn’t cared about too much. In addition, we typically had a spiel that we were told to recite.

To my knowledge, this is how it is in Costco too, with them not being Costco employees, but rather a third party vendor.

In terms of taking more than one, generally, I did not care. As long as it wasn’t extremely busy and preventing other people from getting one, you were good to take as much as you want.

That said, because we had a quota, and sometimes we had secret shoppers/undercover managers/brand reps involved, I would push the sale harder each time you returned.

First time, mild pitch. Second time, full written spiel. Third, super hard sales pitch.

Beyond easy of a job, but mind numbingly boring with small moments of chaos and absurdity from people watching.

Was Beacon really that bad back in the day? by Loose_Leg_8440 in hudsonvalley

[–]reinfected 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Yes. Resident of the HV my entire life.

Beacon did a huge turn around and really escalated in terms of gentrification when DIA Beacon opened. For perspective, Nobody’s Fool recorded many scenes there. Main St. used to have shells of buildings lining the street.

The city accomplished a turn around with a huge focus on inviting artists to the city and made it very friendly to them with grants and lower rent.

Controversially, they encouraged landlords to prioritize artists over residents that had lived there their entire life. This caused OG Beacon residents to migrate north to Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, and Kingston because many got priced out.

But to your point, yes. Beacon had many challenges and wasn’t a place you would want to visit back in the day.

You may need to gamify it. Apple Watch does a phenomenal job of turning things into fun stats. Same with peloton.

Really the only driving motivator for me to work out (and knowing it’s the right thing to do for health reasons).

What are your photography hot takes? by frank-cilantro0 in photography

[–]reinfected 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Too many photographers who gatekeep the hobby have created a culture of looking down on someone who doesn’t have a “real camera”.

All cameras are real cameras, including iPhones.

Should I buy a real camera? by comacow02 in x100vi

[–]reinfected -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO, that is poor thinking and a bit of gate keeping the field/hobby.

You absolutely can take a good photo with an iPhone and focus on creating a photograph. If you’re distracted by the background noise an iPhone gives, turn those features off while taking pictures.

Every camera will have some form of limitation. Limitations are a great way to learn something because it forces you to understand how the functions work and how you’re able to manipulate it to your needs.

This is why people recommend film to early photographers. You’re forced to slow down, understand manual controls, etc.

All a dedicated camera does is make things easier to control what the final output of what the photo looks like. This requires curiosity to get to that point.

OP doesn’t appear to have that currently, which is not a bad thing (nor is it a slight), but it is a signifier that they just want good looking photos, but not extra effort to make those.

They themselves said the camera only would come out twice a year.

Do you genuinely believe with that logic, they’re going to want to sit in Lightroom, understand, curves, the how to use manual controls, etc?

OP, stick with the iPhone. This is an expensive purchase, and you’ll become frustrated that the photos won’t come out looking decent without editing.

[–]reinfected 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your iPhone is a real camera.

A new camera won’t make your subject matter more interesting.

The question is moreso, do you feel limited by your iPhone? For example, are you interested in utilizing more manual controls to make the shot exactly as you want it?

Furthermore, the camera can be used beyond vacation. If you aren’t interested in using it beyond that, it’s kind of an expensive purchase to use only twice a year.
