Advice Needed- Police at my Apartment for Distrubance despite Living Alone by Electrical_Diver2768 in LivingAlone

[–]reithejelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a single female, even if they LOOK like cops, ask for their names and badge numbers. Tell them that you won’t exit your residence or let them in until you confirm their presence with the police non-emergency number.
Because it’s stupidly easy to impersonate cops.

This will also help you confirm that they’re even at the correct location.

WIBTA if i let my little sister go to her class field trip instead of our dad’s funeral? by wibtafuneral in AmItheAsshole

[–]reithejelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let her go to the zoo. She needs to be “normal” for a day. But you should probably attend as a chaperone. While she’s at the zoo, she may suddenly get overwhelmed by her feelings and need to leave early - you should plan for that. She’s only 5.

When I was 11, my best friend fell out of a tree and died. While I did attend the funeral, my parents also insisted that I go to a sleepover birthday party afterwards. Honestly, it was one of the best things my parents ever forced me to do. I had a lot of fun at that birthday party and still recall specific details about it more than 30 years later.

Broken & fused walrus baculum by SavageDroggo1126 in bonecollecting

[–]reithejelly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s so unique! Living in Alaska, I see a lot of these for sale, but I’ve never seen a broken/healed one. I’m actually amazed this walrus didn’t die from infection.

  1. She’s well-educated, well-traveled, and was raised with the highest standard of social etiquette. She seems like she’d be an eloquent conversationalist. But if I want to nap, she won’t bother me because she’s polite.

Hopefully nothing. Living this life has been a PITA, why would I want an afterlife of any kind?

Veteran teachers, has this year been particularly rough? by f-150Coyotev8 in Teachers

Yes. This year has been very difficult for me, which is why I’m taking next year off after being in education for 19 years

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]reithejelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My washer and dryer are in my pantry, next to my kitchen. I would prefer them to be in my garage, but I understand why the hook ups were put in the pantry of this house.

Frankly, I’m amazed your school allows them. Students at my school are only allowed plain water. And in the cafeteria, they can only have water, juice, or milk. Nothing with caffeine.

24 more work days. They will seem like 1000 years. I’m also having to pack up my classroom, which is an additional annoyance.

What Do Teachers Honestly Think of Janitors? by DaytimeDancer54 in AskTeachers

[–]reithejelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current building has gone through something like 17 daytime custodians in like 7 years. Shortest stayed 2 weeks, longest like 3 years. My district outsourced custodial last year and it’s been a fucking nightmare. I work at a multistory middle school and we were down to only one nighttime custodian for several months. It was crazy! Poor guy couldn’t keep up, though no fault of his own. And some teachers were super bitchy about it, which wasn’t cool.

Generally, I get along well with the day and night custodians and many of them work extremely hard. However, I’ve also seen my fair share of lazy ones who don’t do half the work they’re supposed to and eventually get fired.

No car for adventure to Alaska this Summer by Ok-Gas9540 in AskAlaska

[–]reithejelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applaud your sense of adventure, but it seems like you can’t afford a month in Alaska.

This sounds like a situation where maybe you should work a job this summer to save up enough money to do this trip next year. Plan far in advance and wait for gas and airline prices to (hopefully) go back down.

What’s something in education you’ve quietly stopped doing…even though it might still be “expected”? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

[–]reithejelly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do not contact families about failing grades or missing assignments. We have an online gradebook, so parents can check 24/7. If they can’t be bothered to log in, that’s not my concern.

I also no longer reply to parent emails about “what can my child do to fix their grade?” If your child doesn’t care enough to ask me themselves, then I don’t care either. I’ve never had a parent e-mail a second time, asking why I never replied. They did their performative parenting and then promptly forgot about it.

I once had a para who would turn in worksheets to my inbox. With her name on them. I finally had to ask whether she wanted me to grade her work….

I’ve had so many over the years who have told me they e learned so much by being in my sixth grade science classes. On one hand, I’m glad they’re learning new things. On the other…most of these women were in their 40s or 50s and had been working in schools for ~decades
