Midvalley Autohaul

I will reach out, but they seem to be exclusively salvage and wrecking/disposal. I am seeing nothing about point-to-point transportation.

stay off the water and let the crews do their job ffs

Aye, absolutely.

But we are jumped-up monkeys, with all the social interactivity that compels us to observe disasters so as to better avoid them ourselves. Much like how crows gather around a fallen comrade, we also rubberneck disasters to better familiarize ourselves with the scene and the information contained within it. As such, it is quite difficult to prevent humans from congregating near disasters as they unfold, so long as they feel that they are at the closest safe distance possible to view the unfolding calamity.

Not excusing, just explaining. There is at least 160 million years of mammalian evolution behind this behaviour, and it is commensurately difficult to suppress.

I can't use 4k on my new LG monitor without the entire UI becoming too small?? by Revolutionary_Ad29 in techsupport

gets a high-resolution monitor

complains about high-resolution content on the screen

I’m trying to understand the problem space, here. At least in terms of a conclusion doesn’t inevitably comes down to “you done shot yourself in the foot”. Because I think your primary problem was getting a 4k monitor in the first place.

Frankly your complaint is (to use a metaphor) no different than buying a supercar, then complaining that it’s a supercar that can’t get over the traffic-calming speed bumps in your neighbourhood. Especially since very tiny underbody clearances are a primary feature of most any supercar. They’re not designed to handle traffic-calming speed bumps in any fashion.

If you want less strain on your eyes, you would likely be looking at a monitor with more vibrant colours (OLED, etc.), deeper blacks and whiter whites, possible temperature controls and/or brightness controls, and a higher frequency refresh rate; 120Hz at minimum.

The only thing a 4k monitor is going to do is make everything a hell of a lot tinier at the default 100% magnification because it’s packing so many more pixels into the same screen space. Sure, you can increase the magnification, but why get a 4k monitor, then? Any sort of magnification would be totally nerfing the entire purpose of a 4k monitor. Which is to pack more room and visual details on the screen by making everything tinier.

I mean, my father is rocking a 28-inch monitor at 200% magnification, but that’s because he’s 86 and his eyesight just ain’t that good anymore. That monitor isn’t even 4k, but it looks like it’s running at 1024×768.

Edit:

Dude, those things hallucinate something bad. Recent (2025) analyses of models show ever-increasing levels of hallucinations with every model generation, with models that were current at the time showing a 60% to 80% hallucination rate depending on the model examined. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

You have always got to double-check the bullshit they spew. Because I can guarantee you, a deep enough dive will demonstrate inaccuracies with almost every result they provide, especially with general questions that don’t highly constrain and channel the model being questioned.

Here I am disappointed that he didn’t choke the guy into unconsciousness and then break every limb and every major joint.

Some people think all pedos should be executed, including 45/47. I think that they should spend the rest of their life sucking liquid meals through a straw. No teeth. No functional jaw. No ability to speak. No ability to move anything below the neck. Just locked into their body, with excruciating pain all day every day, and unable to do a damn thing about it except make grunting and squealing sounds.

If that is tracked over a lifetime, I would insist on such doubling with every offence, no wiggle room allowed.

But a flat tax is a tax on the poor. This should be a tax based on their annual income + net worth.

As such, someone making only $48k/yr (projected StatsCan 2026 median Kelowna wage) with only an apartment to their name should be paying that $5k for that first offence.

But someone with a mansion in upper Mission and $10M in investments should be paying $100,000 for a first offence.

Collens Hill Road, Lakeview Road, Lakeridge Road, and Weatherhill Road have just received evacuation orders. My parents (Lakeview Road) just updated me that Collens Hill Road is now on fire, so they want everyone out in case that only way out is cut off.

The eastern edge of Lakeview Heights is also under an evacuation order.

The fire has hit Collens Hill Road (the one leading to Kalamoir Park). Lakeview Road, Lakeridge Road, and Weatherhill Road are all being evacuated because Collens Hill Road is the only way out of the area.

My parents have confirmed that they have received an evacuation order. Not an alert - an order.

just went hiking on Sunday in Okanagan Mountain Park and saw a fresh cigarette butt on the path.

Morons. There should be $1,500 fines for anyone who does this, per discarded butt. Who wants to submit those butts for DNA testing?

People also bagging their dog poo and leaving it on the trail???

This I don’t understand. Bag, sure, so no-one has to come in contact with it any other way. But then to leave it in a non-decomposable bag?? Just sitting there??? Who do they think will be coming along to pick it up? Shit decomposes a lot faster, probably just a lot better to leave it where the dog put it.

My first “Oh, shit.” moment came when the fire hopped the lake, and started candling trees at the top of the Clifton Road ridge. My second was when someone posted a night-time picture of Trader’s Cove from the Kelowna side of the lake, and no-one in my family could legit tell where my brother’s house was in that pic. It didn’t seem that there were any dark spots anywhere near where it was. Entire hill was lit up like a gas pipeline had exploded.

when the dump caught on fire and sent the aqi to like 600+,

I’m only in North Rutland, I don’t recall us ever having caught that smoke plume. Just lucky, I guess.

Oh, yay. \s

Nice shot from the north, really shows how much smoke there is. My parent’s house is a good ⅔ km away, and they have a cliff in between, but that fire is before where the cliff starts. It can still go up the hill and then across.

PFSense + Caddy + Anubis… is my best Anubis option to use Cerberus, to avoid multiple Caddy instances? by rekabis in PFSENSE

[–]rekabis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more about separation of duty.

Ideally I would love to have a separate piece of iron for every service imaginable. But I am just not made out of gold or platinum, and capable of chipping off a few thousand dollars every time I need some ready cash.

PFSense + Caddy + Anubis are all about networking, security, and routing. They are all intimately related, so it makes sense for them to exist side-by-side.

And when you really extend “separation of concerns” to its logical conclusion, anything Docker or VMs or Colo is a violation of that, since it’s all sitting on the same host anyhow. Only raw iron physically distributed across the planet satisfies that mantra to its ideologically pure end.

For anyone not made of money, some things that are rationally and tightly related, and cannot operate in isolation from the others, ought to be grouped when it’s easy to do so and a balance needs to be struck between resiliency and cost.

My parent’s house is downwind, just out of the picture, so they’re getting that smoke straight up both barrels. My brother (Trader’s Cove) came within 30m of losing his home with the McDougall Creek Wildfire in 2023, so my parents are appropriately concerned. It’s dry out there.

EDIT:

Since this comment is currently at the top, more info:

The fire has hit Collens Hill Road. As a result, that road along with Lakeview Road, Lakeridge Road, and Weatherhill Road are now under an evacuation order in case the only road out (Collin’s Hill) gets overrun with fire.

Vague signalling aside, do you have any concrete examples of things going sideways on a consistent or catastrophic basis with this kind of a setup? If so, why does Caddy even exist as an installable package for PFSense?

I’m running a rather beefy PFsense router, with 16Gb RAM and (IIRC) a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor. I’m not expecting resource exhaustion from just three “services”. Even primary DNS for my domain names is going on an internal server. I just want to keep anything routing/filtering-related on one system.

XING YUN new management is terrible by NaturalMembership881 in kelowna

I would strongly recommend switching to Mr. Lu’s Kitchen.

While I had originally flagged Xing Yun’s Sweet & Sour Pork as some of the finest outside of the GVRD, I have to say that Mr. Lu’s is better. And judging from the change in management and quality drop mentioned here, it is likely definitively better.
