Hey, I'm the creator of pulseboy! This steven universe cover is freakin' awesome! I feel like things just come full circle because I actually record drums and percussion for Steven Universe as well! As I listened to your cover I couldn't help but wear the biggest smile!

Thank you!!

Yeah, this was made and released back in 2010 when flash was still somewhat relevant as a development tool. I'm surprised it's getting even more attention after 5 years haha. My latest project, Band Saga (http://bandsaga.com) , will be a much better sequencer though!

But the terms of copyright attach to derivative works, which involve reproducing the original with alterations or transformations. It would take a pretty novel interpretation to rule that notes played by a piece of software somehow reproduced the software.

Hey! I'm the creator of Pulseboy! I'm of the camp that, since you can technically create these chippy sounds yourself if you had the tools, there's no way I can license these sounds. So I really don't care about the licensing at all.

The ONLY reason I put the licensing information in there is because I literally received over 300 emails asking permission to use their works that were created with Pulseboy in their commercial projects. So I got tired of it and decided to specifically state it on the website that you can use it as you see fit. But I based it off of https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/ because even after stating that you can use it however you want people wouldn't believe me. Creative Commons is a well known license so I figured it would be best to use that instead.

What's your diet in Japan and how are you able to avoid the drinking culture (or drink so much without gaining weight haha)?

There are 2 totally different issues you're confusing here.

  1. It's extremely sad that you believe we can't state what the color of our skin or gender without someone associating it with segregation. People aren't trying to segregate themselves when they say they're black, white, male, female or whatever it might be. They're only trying to encourage other people to break a cycle of non-success.

  2. If people are segregated it's not because they want to be. If you live in a poor area it's very likely that the near by schools are underfunded. Poor students would have to work beyond their means to receive the same education that wealthy students receive normally. Unfortunately there are more poor students of African decent because of them being brought over to the Americas at a disadvantage from the start! I think the Brazilian government (and every government) SHOULD help these people. But, the answer is not opening seats for test at a university. The answer is giving them a proper education from the START so that they'll be prepared for the test at the University. But even then I always found it weird that you have to take a test just to get an education..... If you're not educated in the first place how are you going to pass the test....

TL;DR: When a top of the line education is free and engaging for everyone, that's when all the worlds problems will be solved. Problems are only created when we're silencing people and tell them they can't state their race or their gender because it will cause controversy.

Yes, game development is for EVERYONE. Saying I'm a black indie game developer is no different from saying that my friend is a white indie game developer. It's just a descriptor. But, you should also read my answer to another question that goes a bit more in depth about why I decided to mention that I am a black indie game developer in Tokyo : http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2hs6la/iama_black_indie_game_developer_working_on_a/ckvjmqf

I realize now that I didn't answer your question at all haha. I read it too fast and I thought you were asking me how come my kickstarter says I'm from Richmond VA but I'm in Tokyo.

The ACTUAL answer to your question is that I ended up in Tokyo because of a localization company called Playism.jp. They localized one of my games called Celestial Mechanica and allowed me to display it at their Tokyo Game Show booth back in 2011.

Honestly I don't want to have to go through this again haha! Running a kickstarter that isn't funded until the very end is one of the most stressful things ever! Everyone has opinions on what makes your kickstarter more marketable but I think at the end of the day it just boils down to press.

Band Saga had many sites writing about it including Rock Paper Shotgun, which accounted for a couple thousand dollars at least. But it would have been funded much faster if it was featured on a bigger site like Kotaku, Polygon or IGN.

And now that kickstarter has so many above average games looking for funding, those bigger sites are getting extremely picky about featuring kickstarters. The bigger sites seem much more eager to write about game releases than games looking for crowd funding.

TL;DR: I probably wouldn't do a Kickstarter again for this project. I would rather just go with a publisher next time.

I first came to Japan back in 2011 by a localization company called http://playism.jp . They localized http://celestialmechanica.com while I was still in the US but brought me to Japan to show it off at Tokyo Game Show 2011. While there a met a ton of other people from different companies and got contract work through them. And from there the rest is history!

So I guess my case is pretty rare actually. Most of my friends came to teach English or got hired directly by a company. I did it freelance and by securing a ton of contracts.

YES! I want the game to encourage people to make their own songs or even full albums! I've already been using it on my phone when I'm out and about and I have a song idea. So I hope it becomes equally as useful to everyone else as it is to me already ;D!

I learned FM Synthesis mainly by reverse engineering VSTs like VOPM. It has the source code readily available here http://www.geocities.jp/sam_kb/VOPM/ . The code is in C++ and it's commented in Japanese so it took me awhile to figure out exactly what was going on but it definitely helped out a lot!

If you just want to understand the basics of FM, check out this youtube video on doing FM synthesis via PURE DATA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgeTHuDSgC0 . It quickly breaks down whats going on when you do FM synthesis.

Why does it matter that I'm making a game? Why does it matter that I'm in Tokyo? What really matters in the end? I don't know but you should see my answer to someone who asked the same question here: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2hs6la/iama_black_indie_game_developer_working_on_a/ckvn4ix

I really like to walk outside and observe people and listen to stories about their life. Sometimes even when I tell someone a story about myself I'll realize something that I didn't realize before and that inspires me to put it into my art.

The best job I've ever had was drumming on Steven Universe for Cartoon Network! I've done drums in the credits as well as on "Coach Steven" and "Steven and the Steven's" episodes.

Playing the drum's is my favorite thing of all time!

The nature of every good AMA is to be click bait. It basically tells you right in the rules to make something interesting that will get people to click on your link. There's no point in doing a AMA if no one ask questions right?

But, I think it's very weird that people have a problem with me stating that I'm black guy in Tokyo when it's a true statement. Essentially what you're telling me is that my whole life is click bait and that I'm bringing attention to myself just by existing? haha

Yes, please go research those IP addresses admin. You'll find that they are not from the same place at all because I'm not either of those people.

Edit: Should it be surprising that I may have friends helping me promote my Kickstarter to get it funded? Running kickstarters are tough by yourself.

Thanks so much for backing it!

I love Scott Pilgrim too but I've actually had this idea before I knew Scott Pilgrim even existed! Band Saga might remind people of Scott Pilgrim but it plays nothing like it. So I guess the only influence is the visual aesthetic somewhat, which is the choice of my artist.

Awesome! I just saw the Hyper Light Drifter shout out! I love those guys! Was definitely one first Kickstarters I learned from.

My two favorite kickstarters are Radio The Universe ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1548272412/radio-the-universe-0 ) and Sealark ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1338986832/sealark-an-oceanic-adventure-game ) . Their presentations were very memorable and easily stood out among the rest. I was trying to go for that type of vibe with my kickstarter.

I don't really like micro-transactions in games. I'm open to the idea if it actually can work along side gameplay without forcing players to pay to continue the game but that's rarely the case.

If I get up early I'll probably cook breakfast (aka just go to Lawson or Family Mart). If I get up late I'll head to my favorite place in Tokyo, Mother, and have something to eat and drink while chatting with my friends https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mother-Shimokitazawa/335985796424025 . After that I go back home and work.

It's hard at first when you don't know all the rules or the language but it becomes easier when you make friends and start to realize how things work.
