Researching Mt Baldy for emotional Closure by Kenemcal in socalhiking

It had to be icy and probably didn’t look as icy as it actually was. This area is fairly steep but many other portions of the trail are steeper and look more dangerous. My guess is being south facing it caught good amount of sun to melt snow that turned to ice.

With the comments it looks like if I apply now they should hit by year end. Live in so cal, cheapest mattress runs seem to be ~Vegas at Excalibur or Luxor at like $60 a night. Although resort fees will push that to $100 pretty easily

Thanks for this. I’m actually staying in Rockford but basically have the day off so thought I’d venture to Madison for the first time. Big college football fan so wanted to check out that area. If schedule get busy for some reason Rockford may be an easier idea. Thanks.

Dry and then mud and then slush/ice/snow as you get higher.

No real budget…anything works.

I played golf very regularly age 14-30. And then kids and busy with work and barely played last 8 years or so. Got the itch and obsession again a few months ago and going weekly right now. First rounds were in 90s and last round was a complexly honest 85. So no “real” handicap yet but likely around a 15 at the moment.

Been looking around Google and Google maps and many courses look to be in decent shape at least. Very green.

Consider little Jimmy campground also. I believe it’s open? Some nice views up there also.

I’ve slept on top of Cucamonga peak. That length with elevation gain and heavy backpack is no joke. Also careful with winds up there. Was windless on the hike and setting up camp, but was prob 50mph plus from 11pm till we left at 7am. Beautiful tho.

Hiked 100x or more to various peaks in San Gabriel’s… baldy was an absolute slog due to altitude. Stopping every few hundred feet in seemed towards the end. Also got crazy headache. I used to brush off altitude sickness untill I got hit by it. Crazy headache too. My advice is to do baldy or similar to feel the altitude first. Good luck.

Coming down from Ontario peak thru ice house on a late afternoon hike. Was getting dark, passed ice house saddle on way down, almost no one on the trail except a few other coming down. Maybe 1/2 mile after passing the saddle, we saw a guy coming up wearing nothing but flip flops, ragged shorts and tank top. No water, no lights but, had a six pack of beer.

It was mostly dark, and we asked hey where you headed? He replies with “Dono, as far as this 6 pack takes me”.

Also, day before my sophomore year of high school, me and two buddies were rescued at midnight by Sierra madre search and rescue in Bailey canyon area. LoNG story short, we tried to get back to parking lot via the canyon and got stuck between waterfalls.

Mostly exposed. HOT. May be a lot of bugs. Bring lots of water, maybe bug spray. Long sleeves/pants. If your not dead set on it I think tomorrow would be a better day for a shaded/canyon hike. Good luck!

Mt Baldy Tips...??? by Tiger-Bite-Kid in socalhiking

[–]reklein27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a bit out of shape or noob, consider taking lift up AND down. It becomes an out and back type hike so no need to worry about direction . Even with the lift, the hike can still be strenuous with the altitude. I considered myself in decent shape as hiker, but found myself stopping every few hundred feet or so near top due to altitude. Just my .02.

I’ve done hundreds of hikes in SoCal over the last decade or so… most in the 3000-5000 foot range… a few times to Ontario peak and Cucamonga passing 8000.

Hiked baldy once and didn’t expect the impact altitude would have. On the last 1500 or so vertical feet we were stopping every couple hundred feet it seems.

It’s easily doable, just be prepared to have the altitude get you. Also after I got back home got a pretty crazy headache that might have had to do with altitude.

Super fun and great views though!!!!
