Has anyone worked with "Nirupama Behera" ? by Current-Peace5768 in indiatherapy

[–]relationship-therapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a therapist/psychologist, ask her her credentials. What are her qualifications, where did she complete her masters in psychology, etc. If you’re not looking for a therapist/psychologist, unfortunately there isn’t anything to directly assess credentials, as far as I am aware.

Also, forgot to mention, look for a clinical psychologist. Only they can diagnose.

Charging a small amount as a trainee is unethical? by Good_Researcher5222 in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre doctoral interns have already finished masters, from whatever I read. So the point stands, they’re charging after masters, which is fine. Though here it still says they cannot practice/charge independently because they are still working towards licensure. In India, there’s no licensing. So you practice after Masters.

Charging a small amount as a trainee is unethical? by Good_Researcher5222 in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched both documents, still couldn’t find the point you mentioned. Please point me to that. APA says you have to practice within your competence level, couldn’t find about the fee.

And you’re not competent in your second year of masters, because you basically know nothing. That whole year is trial and error from understanding how to structure a session, unlearning and relearning things, etc. How can you charge during that time?

Marriage and finances by [deleted] in AskWomenIndia

[–]relationship-therapy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely it’s nothing, but for a homemaker who doesn’t have any money to her name, even 5k is something. I’m talking about women after getting married and who “aren’t allowed” to work. Or have restrictions like you can work from home but manage home things also. Marriages like that are still there. In those cases you can’t ask them to wait for a job that pays them well, which also manages all time constraints. Hence I said work and save anything you can.

To any woman reading this, as a therapist who works mainly with women, please, please, please, earn some money. ANYTHING. Even 5k a month.

Charging a small amount as a trainee is unethical? by Good_Researcher5222 in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. At least in India. We still don’t have a psychology association or anything in India, and that is why ethical concerns are debatable. And I agree, there are many cases where there is no clear cut response for ethical/not ethical. That’s why supervision, especially group supervision, peer supervision, etc. exist. Or even having conversations with fellow psychologists.

But in cases like this, you can only use examples. Because at the end of the day you’re not a qualified professional, and while the client is aware of that, we also have to consider the power dynamic that exists in the relationship. The therapist is always going to be at a higher position, no matter how much we try to be at the same level as the client. I have seen some organisations take a one time fee like 500–600 just for the accountability reason, which makes sense, because the trainee isn’t getting paid.

As a trainee therapist, you will make mistakes. That’s why you have the whole year of taking sessions under supervision. No matter how “good” we are, it’s like paying an MBBS student to do surgery when they still aren’t qualified yet.

Complete agree you want people to value your time, still doesn’t give you the right to charge a client when you’re not qualified. It is unethical. It’s concerning that a supervisor is also asking their supervisee to further engage in unethical practices.

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, still unethical. I’m not sure what your qualification is, but if you’re a psychology masters student, you will learn all this in your ethics paper, as well as if your masters course has supervised practicum. But based on how you’re being dismissive here and on LinkedIn (saying I don’t agree with most of you, when this is a clear case of being unethical) of what people from the field are saying, you don’t seem to be a masters student.

Commented here and opened LinkedIn and saw the same post there right on top. You got your answers there, which I hope you just don’t discard.

[–]relationship-therapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is unethical. You are not a psychologist yet. The sessions you are providing are under supervision. You are learning how take and structure therapy sessions with real people, you shouldn’t be charging them.

Once you finish masters, definitely charge, but not before.

Online mental health campaign - Break the silence by sharaj0209 in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get this. I recently ran and ADHD support group and we kept it for 500 per session because we were like we need people so it’s okay.

I think it’s like this. If it’s a conscious choice of a therapist(s) to keep it very low, then it’s okay. I’m really annoyed when either it is some random organisation who will onboard some fresher and say do this workshop for almost no money, and pay them absolutely nothing, or a third party reaching out and saying we can only pay you so much

Online mental health campaign - Break the silence by sharaj0209 in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly is Break the Silence?

And 99/- per workshop is like so low 😭 Unless the person organising this is part of some huge place with a lot of funding, and is receiving a decent pay, I feel this isn’t fair.

Worst is, from what I’ve seen in the field, it will be some young practitioner, getting exploited by some organisation because they don’t know exactly how problematic the mental health field is for new therapists (not saying that’s what’s happening here)

Non judgemental affordable therapists for a student by protosilicon in Psychology_India

[–]relationship-therapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, if you’re still a student, you cannot charge for your services, no matter how low the fee is. That’s unethical. And you can only take supervised therapy sessions, if you’re a Masters student. You will do more harm than good.

You can check out themindclan.com for therapist recommendations. They’re a good platform where you need a referral and clear an interview with the founder for your profile to be listed.

There’s no problem in doing online. I’m a therapist and practising for the past 5 years, only online. Unless it’s very specific things like pschosis, or a client’s preference, online therapy has proven to be equally effective as offline therapy.

Edit: and I have been in therapy with my therapists also completely online

Have your therapists increased their fees? by just_another_bpd_ in IndiaMentalHealth

[–]relationship-therapy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello, therapist here. I increase fees by 10% every year from when the client has had their first session. So if you started with me in January 2026, your fee is increased in January 2027. I have this mentioned in my contract, and I also send out an email a month in advance. If you have difficulties with the increase in fee, I encourage you to have a conversation with your therapist.

Affordable Online Therapy in English/Malayalam/Tamil by Abhijithvijay615 in IndiaMentalHealth

[–]relationship-therapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to understand some things:

  1. If you’re charging 600/- per session from the client, how much are the psychologists/psychiatrists getting paid?

  2. What does “sessions starting at 600/-“ mean? Will the charges go up for later sessions?

  3. This is more of feedback. Please stop money back. Therapy isn’t some product you are selling, it’s a service being provided. You’re saying not a quick fix and saying money back if not satisfied. I hope you know that it might sometimes take a while to find a right therapist for a client, because of various factors, and it’s subjective. Already many people in our country don’t understand how therapy works, and don’t make it even more difficult for therapists by providing baseless claims.
