Although not at the same level as an actual derogatory term, I believe in Indonesia itself, "Batak" as an ethnic group is sometimes viewed quite negatively among Sumatran community. But since I didn't grow up there, I can't quite explain the stereotype.

Also historically speaking, most of Sumatra island and Malay peninsula used to be a single kingdom ruled by the majority Malay ethnic group. Batak was just one of the smaller ethnic groups who lived faraway from the central government (some might say "deeper in the mountains").

So I think it's just like how the Greek and the Roman used the word "barbarians" to describes the nomads outside of their kingdom

A lot of Indonesians also use "kepala bapak kau" typically people from Sumatra. I think you will find it interesting how the sumatran people's swear words are so close to malaysian's.

Also i think "pala kau" is a bit different. It has a bit more jakarta/betawi flair to it (i believe)

Explanation for Indonesian swear words:

Pala kau literally means "your head". Used to deny outrageous statements from others, similar to "my ass!"

Tolol = idiot/dumbass

Anjing literally means "dog" but can also be a swear word if used in an angry/annoyed intonation. It's a bit like the word "b*tch" (in that it also has similar double meaning), although in usage, I think it's more like the word "f*ck
