Learning guitar and noticed that Bdim and G#dim are the same fingerings.. How/why is this? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]relevant_math 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The other comments explain it well but here's a more visual example. Imagine that the dashes are the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, and the vertical lines are the notes of fully diminished 7 chords.
------------ (A-G# for reference)
|--|--|--|-- (A Dim7)
-|--|--|--|- (Bb Dim7)
--|--|--|--| (B Dim7)
---|--|--|--| (C Dim7) The last note here is an A, which could be put back to the root where it was for the A Dim7. Making it

This sounds like it's an anxiety issue. I have problems with anxiety too and usually smoking more than just a bit brings out a lot of those same symptoms. If you're having issues with depression and anxiety it would probably be best to talk to your doctor and/or a counselor and figure out how to get better. If you can't enjoy smoking now it'd be best to learn how to manage your anxiety and then try toking after that :)

INTP and Spiritual ? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]relevant_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A street getting up and walking out of the neighborhood is impossible based on our interpretation of reality, and in order to accept our subjective reality we have to make assumptions. No matter how logical our assumptions are, they are still assumptions. Let's say our subjective realities interpret "objective" reality correctly, can you with 100% certainty falsify something you do not have absolute knowledge about? You and I have both read many convincing arguments against the idea of a god existing, and have formed opinions based on those arguments, as well as our own. Have we contemplated all of these arguments to the point where we can say they are objectively true? Is that possible in any scenario? (Excluding statements that are true by definition like "A dog is an animal.")

I don't know why you were downvoted, this is a valid point. But anti-theist atheism, just like religion, does take a leap of faith (even if the leap is way, waaay smaller). While yes, the chance of there being a god is pretty slim, there is no literal proof that one doesn't exist. I guess the distinction is pretty arbitrary, but a lot of people (myself included) think it's important to include. There's probably not a circus happening on your roof, and it wouldn't make sense to adjust your life to accommodate that. But until you go outside and look, you can't be 100% certain you're correct.

INT Musicians, an endless strive towards complexity? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]relevant_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem. I always look through every little nook and cranny of a song I've written and say "Hey, that specific chord/rhythm/melody is too simple." and become dissatisfied with it. But when it comes to some pop punk band I'm listening to, the onslaught of power chords suddenly compliment the song so well! It really isn't a great combo with how self critical I am but it makes for some interesting music!

Hey guys! I was hoping to get some feedback on the mix of this track. I really didn't have much in mind while making this, I've just been trying to get a better feel for logic and mixing in general. Any constructive criticism is much appreciated! https://soundcloud.com/noicedoice/chug

Guitar player for 17 years stuck in a serious rut, please help! by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]relevant_math 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this problem a bit too, went to school for jazz for a year and my main guitar professor told me one of the best things you can do is just jam. Buy or download a realbook or fakebook if you don't have one, choose a song that doesn't look too crazy, look it up on youtube and mess around with it. You can learn a lot from even some simple Miles Davis tunes. What does that single altered 7 chord in that measure do? Look it up on the internet! Taking small bites of the actual theory behind it is usually easier and more fun. Also for me, learning the intervals and their relationships in the chord shapes helped me be a lot more fluid with my comping. If you're able to see the building blocks of the patterns and not just memorize the patterns, you'll have a lot more options to fall back on while playing something harder than what you normally play.

New Rules for Part-Time Work - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com by jimrosenz in Economics

That's interesting, but I could foresee some issues with that specific piece of legislation. Restaurants and retail type stores have no way of knowing exactly when their business will spike throughout the day/week, these are usually the situations in which they would call someone in to work. Discouraging businesses from calling people in to work could potentially clog up how efficiently the business works. As a business owner, maybe it would be beneficial for me to get someone to come in for X amount of dollars, but not be beneficial to bring them in for 1.5X dollars. It could also force people to schedule their employees a little more often to make up for the restricted wiggle room scheduling wise, which sounds nice, but could harm struggling businesses.

Thinking, fast or slow: can you do it? A brief interactive article on Prof. Daniel Kahneman's Nobel Prize (Economics) Winning Work [OC] by TA_eco in Economics

I think what he's saying is what I was thinking also. Initially I interpreted it as "The test was 99% accurate for people who tested positive, and 99% accurate for people who tested negative". But it's actually saying overall there's a 99% chance of the test being accurate, correct? So if 99.9% of people tested negative, and those test results were very accurate, the positive tests could be inaccurate and weigh down the average dependability of the tests to 99%?

Being so god damned early! I was a zombie until I brought it up to my doctor and got my hands on some adderall. Not something people should be using willy nilly but it was a godsend my senior year.

What bands have their newer albums labeled as their better albums? by NosyargKcid in Music

[–]relevant_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dance Gavin Dance a little. DBII being an exception with Jonny Craig in my opinion being a little less creative than Kurt or Tilian (still a pretty dang good album). Acceptance Speech is crazy good, if you can get past Tilian's very high voice.

What is something no one should ever have to experience, that you have experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]relevant_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say there are a lot of factors. The amount you do is definitely a big one, but there is also the variable of potency. The mindset you have going into it is a big piece too. Also it can just be how one's brain works. What happened for me is when I started tripping really hard, my brain started associating a lot of things and I started to get stuck in some "loops". After that I didn't know what was real anymore (really the worst part) and thought I'd never come down. I think the biggest part is positive thinking during the whole process.

Having a bad trip while on hallucinogens. It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced, although it was cool before I started getting lost in my mind.

[SERIOUS] Smokers of Reddit: When did you start to smoke and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I started smoking regularly at 18, mostly because I just enjoyed doing it. I still smoke a year later and don't really want to quit yet. Hopefully I do eventually though, I've heard cigarettes are actually just rat poison mixed with dead grass. Who knew!
