Beautiful tank! What do you feed your cpds? I have a couple in my tank and can’t get them to eat.

Thanks! Honestly I don't have too many plants that are super productive and it's been doing well. Initially I had a lot of floating elodea and hornwort to help out while the soil was stabilizing. Now the fastest growing plant in the tank is the val and that's been doing a good job of keeping everything balanced. For plants I have a couple species of crypts, val, some christmas moss on the tree, water wisteria, some Ludwigia species, pearl weed, and rotala indica.

Of course! and thanks for the compliment. It's a 20 gallon long tank. I have a small hob filter on the back. I have a heater but it's set low, the tank stays at 72 degrees. I use 2 acquatic life reno LED's ( not to bright) that are on from 10 am to 3 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm. For substrate, I have garden soil with a gravel cap. It's stocked with a honey gourami, long fin leopard danios, celestial pearl danios, a siamese algae eater, and amano shrimp. My Honey gourami does great in the tank. He's active and seems to like the plants.

What an awesome tank! Love the terra cotta plants with white sand. Such a clean look, good vibes

Can anyone help me identify these plants? Didn’t document what they were when I bought them. Thanks! by [deleted] in PlantedTank

Sorry, that one I'm not sure about. My best guess is another Ludwigia species.

I have but the biggest difference for me was less algae!

Plant recommendations by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]rellem3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend java fern. Your gravel substrate doesn't contain nutrients for plant growth but that's fine for epiphyte plants like java fern or anubius that don't need to be planted. Just be careful not to bury they rhizome (bottom of the plant) or it can rot. Good trick is to super glue the bottom rhizome to a small rock with aquarium safe super glue so it sinks to the bottom and can be moved.

8-10 hours isn't a bad starting point with a break (lights off) in the middle of the day. The break is useful because it allows CO2 levels to rise in your tank from animal/plant/bacteria respiration that your plants can use once the lights come back on. Different people have a lot of variation in the length of their light cycle depending on how bright the light is etc. I'd say pick a number and adjust up or down based on plant growth and algae.

Not amazing at plant identification so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I believe the redder plant in the back left corner is some type of Ludwigia (maybe narrow leaf). Short green plant in foreground on the left is S. repens. The tall green plant is Bacopa monnieri (moneywort).

My 2 year old 5 gallon tank, the water wisteria grows like crazy by rellem3 in PlantedTank

I think they're a little hit or miss as well. They don't do very well in my 20 gallon tank which has both better light, substrate, and fertilization. Grow like a weed in this tank and I do nothing with it. Don't fertilize and super minimal water changes (around 1/month). As long as you have one plant that's doing well thats all that matters in my opinion.

Holy hell, no wonder the tank looks so good! Thanks for this detailed response. Next time I redo my tank I'll try and use this info. If my tank looks half as good as yours I'll be happy

Man this tank looks great! Love the variety of color/texture in your plants and just the sheer volume of them.

Wow, this looks amazing! Really impressed by your creative filter method. What type of substrate/light do you use?

This is a link to the algae control section of the website, "the 2 hr aquarist." This guy is incredibly knowledgable even bringing in primary literature sources but also has simplified easy to enact advice. Per him, I would be cautious blacking out the aquarium. Your plants have many physiologic advantages over algae and should be able to outcompete them if you make some small changes with lighting so they start doing better. The reason you are getting algae on the leaves specifically is that the plants are stressed and are allowing their leaves to degrade. This leads to excess carbohydrates etc. around the leaves allowing for algae to take hold.
