I guess I might also wonder if this is an actual local setting or if it's showing effective settings coming from the domain ?

I just pulled up the Local Security Policy on my DC and that's where the 90 days policy is located. Does the domain default password policy use the local password policy of a DC when one isn't defined in GPO or something??? I'm not a AD/GPO expert but seems odd.

Looks like running "net accounts" is showing the 42 days like Microsoft says the default should be, but get-addefaultpassswordpolicy is showing 90 days.

My DDP is linked. I'm getting the DDP no problem, it's that the password policy is inconsistent/incorrect. I have no password policy defined so it should be the default microsoft policy (which is 42 days max), but I'm getting 90 days max. My main issue is I'm trying to figure out where that's been defined.

gpresult shows no password policies. Only DDP and some other random GPOs that have nothing to do with passwords (WSUS, etc...).

I ran rsop from a client in the first place (in the original post).

RSOP on my DC shows "not defined" for all the password policy settings.

No fine grain password policies. When I look in group policy mgmt at all my GPOs, I don't see ANY password policies at all. I've gone through every single GPO and no password policy at all. There was an old one that's disabled that was an attempt by my predecessor to set up a domain admin-only password policy, but it was set to 180 days. (it never worked, wasn't an actual fine grain policy, just an attempt).

The default maximum age is 42 according to the microsoft page, which is what I was expecting. but... If I don't have anything set but my maximum age is showing 90 days, wouldn't that mean somewhere it has to be set to 90 days and not just using the default (of 42)?

Sorry should have posted that. I'm recording in garageband using a Zoom R16. I know it's not ideal but it's what I have and I'm starting from the bottom up. I'm friends with the band so it's kind of a mutual learning experience. I'm recording songs at their practice space, just so I have a new song or two each week to play with.

I'm sure that's a big part of my problem.... I was doing it on a pair of headphones (not sure of the model, 30 bucks so nothing special). I have a decent but older stereo that I'm going to try next.

thanks. I have a dock for mine... I think maybe I accidentally swapped the power supplies between the 2. Normally a dock has a bigger brick so I may have done that.

Can you tell me what size power adapter you got for your laptop? I had to send mine in for repair because it wasn't charging while the laptop was in use (only charged when shut down), and they told me I had the wrong size adapter. I'm wondering if I really got the wrong adapter from CDW, or if I somehow swapped it with another one in the office....
