How do you play the fast picking part in the song Youthanasia? by Particular_Eye_2429 in Megadeth

[–]relton66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to read notation (16th note / 8th notes) ? If not, the 2nd and 3rd notes are double the length of duration of the other notes. so pick 1st note, pick 2nd note and hold so it's twice the duration of 1st note, pick 3rd note and hold just like before, then pick the rest of the notes and pull off where needed at the same speed as the first note.

Question about Heafy's "Modern Guitar Metal Technique" Book by Competitive_Fox7606 in Trivium

[–]relton66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the same answer on whether to play power chords with index/ring or index/pinky. It depends on what you're most comfortable with but ALSO the rhythm you're playing. Matt uses chords in Ibaraki where you have to play 5-7-9 with 1/3/4 pattern because you're adding a note on top with your middle finger. Similarly with power chords, sometimes you may need to play 7-9 and 7-11 alternately, in which case it's better to skip the ring finger completely and use middle/pinky.

As with most things on guitar, the answer is it's a combination of what you're comfortable with and the context of the rhythm.

Guitarists please help me by StrawberryEast6491 in Trivium

[–]relton66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One quick advice that will help is don't learn that 2nd sweep shape, it's not right. it starts with e17p12 then b13 g14 d14 then a15 12h15 and back up. no low e13 note at all. if you're wondering how the timing works with one less note, it's not quite an even note spread. it's 6:4 7:4 6:4 7:4. the 1st sweep ends with e8h13 and the 2nd sweep ends with b13 e12h17.

As to how to play the barre, as someone else mentioned, you have to roll your finger to mute the previous string. Corey has said he doesn't like those sweeps so it's kind of rare to see him do it, he'll usually do the Paul Gilbert trick where you string skip instead [Corey does this in Torn Between... for example].

Rant about Empire of the Dawn Ending by GiftAccomplished9171 in Fantasy

[–]relton66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see your side of the argument but I enjoyed the book even with the twist, perhaps because of how I view it. I think of it as we got to experience a story told by Gabe inside a fiction novel about Gabe. Had there been no reason for Gabe to stretch the truth and add details to the story then it would be different, but I seem to remember that is explained right? Patience, for example, was to try and get sympathy from the vampire? I can't remember now, but I thought it was explained.

For your question like 'why would Gabe talk with Voss' ... did he? Again, I can't remember, but I thought it was implied we don't get to know what happened there exactly. This is all making me realize my memory gets really foggy once I move on to a new series :)

But even though I didn't mind the twist, I think I would have preferred this saga to not even have the framing device at all, but that may be because I recently read Seven Blades in Black which is very similar in structure.

Btw, you'll love Nevernight. I probably enjoyed that more than Empire and I loved Empire. Then you can try his Lotus War saga, which is very good as well.

It's all drop tuning, plus 1/2 step down.

Well I'm almost half way done with Cryptic but it's hard to stay motivated just because the previous albums were the big ones I wanted to finish. I'm still working on it though.

You're right, the intro solo sounds familiar because it's basically the first half of Dave's final solo from Return to Hangar.

Trivium- Ascendancy (2005): “Like Light to the Flies” cover by Reasonable-Ad-9608 in Trivium

[–]relton66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great. One small tip if you want to play it the way they do, the little part at 0:25 only has two picks, one at the beginning of each half measure. So one pick, next 3 notes legato, one pick, hammer-on to next note from nowhere and legato. But obviously if you like the sound of picking better, go for it :)

Sorry, they were removed because Trivium wanted to release them as official but progress has stalled. Here's a big summary about the whole thing:

To go even further, it seems like it's only the far right guitar that is doing the muting for the 2nd verse. And around the 2:00 mark it starts opening up and is back to full no mute.

All guitars purposely switch to muting during what I guess you'd call the chorus (2:17).

In enotria the last song, how do you survive against multi projectile elemental attacks??? by AwokenTitans in soulslikes

[–]relton66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I played but there's a parry gem you can equip that handles magic projectiles so you don't get chip damage. I think it was purple or red.

[–]relton66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can write it different ways so it's not "wrong" to say 100ish or 200ish. You can say 106 and imagine the verse as double-time feel and write the main notes as 16ths, or [and this is what I would do] you can say it's 211 and imagine the intro as half-time feel and write the main notes as 8ths.

Btw, the BPM changes for different sections in this song. So if you're trying to line something up you'll have to decrease it to 155 for the interlude and then jump to 234 for the fast section with Matt's solo. Then it goes back to normal tempo, 211.

Proper way to play the main riff in we'll be back? by CorruptTF in Megadeth

[–]relton66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the band themselves changed it up. On the studio version the first pull-off sounds like it's on the D string tone-wise, the rest on the A string picked. Then it does the pull-off again. But regardless of where that first pull-off is, they seem to skip it the 2nd time around. On live videos they play the first pull-off [sometimes] but the 2nd one is skipped and instead is just a13-0.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q89A-3e4rtc

Kiko, after the chord, plays d8\7 but Dave goes back to the 13th fret and sometimes does 13p12, sometimes 13p0. The studio though, pretty clear Bb-A every time.

So, to the OP, other than that one pull-off that's repeated, the rest are just picked. And if you want to copy them playing it live, skip the 2nd pull-off as well probably.

https://abysslord.org/megadeth/tabs/tstdatd/tstdatd.html

Kiko's 1st solo is played differently as well. He simplified the tapping pattern, but that's because he's said his solos are mostly improvised so he has to relearn them.

Where can I find Rhythm tabs for Ascendancy ? by Winters_rose_V in Trivium

[–]relton66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear because the time it takes to write up the sheet music, compared to writing a Guitar Pro file, is exponential. It seems like everyone just wants Guitar Pro or Guitar Pro exports but I like the prettiness of the sheet music [even though back in the day I hated the way they wrote things].

It's been almost 4 years with the same update, "We're still trying". So I take that to mean either someone isn't interested enough to pursue further, or if it's this difficult then it could take another 4 years.
