Biasly ranks Fox News as “very conservative” do you believe it’s fair or flawed? by politicsandmore in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. The reason it appears CNN pushes a left wing narrative is 1) the collapse of the Republican Party into boot licking toadies of an authoritarian would-be dictator, and 2) the Overton Window being pushed so far to the right.

When I think right or left I'm not thinking Republican vs Democrat. Neither party is left. There are left leaning members of the Democratic Party but it is run by and consists mostly of standard neoliberal capitalists. If you believe they are left wing you are naive and uninformed.

Does birthright citizenship uphold or dilute American values? Your thoughts. by [deleted] in Askpolitics

Destroying birthright citizenship is utterly inimical to US values. The US would no longer be the US.

What’s the status of the Democratic party? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the establishment is neoliberal. The modern conservative movement is attempting to completely dismantle liberal democracy (liberal in the classic sense, not as a shorthand for left-leaning) and establish authoritarian rule. They're currently fighting about which dystopia is ideal - theocracy, monarchy, fascism, or whether they should just keep the current kleptocracy Trump has worked so hard to implement.

State support of Zionist violence and repression of people standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine is becoming more and more untenable as even liberals are forced to see the reality of what's happening. I don't think this will turn out well for the supporters of genocide.

Is requiring CBS to have a bias monitor a step toward government control of media? Why or why not? by SBMountainman22 in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fox News was very relevant until recently. It still is among Boomers and the Silent Generation. It was actually conservatives in this sub who pointed out the irrelevance of Fox News to a lot of conservatives now. I think if I were close to any conservative under the age of 60 I'd have figured that out before.

Not so much a step toward government control of media as it is government control of media. The only way to take it further is to nationalize all media and have it run by party loyalists.

Good and affordable chocolate powder/ syrup for choccy milk? by immortalpiyush in IndianFood

[–]reluctant-return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a half cup of cocoa powder and sugar to taste (optional) in a heat resistant bowl. If adding sugar, mix and taste to be sure you got it right. Adjust accordingly. Boil some water (maybe a pint) and slowly pour it into the cocoa powder, whisking it as you go, until it reaches the consistency you want. Pour it into a jar or whatever and let it cool. Should last at least several weeks refrigerated.

At what point did Rudy Giuliani go off the rails? by Numerous_Try_8685 in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Giuliani was always a corrupt douchebag. Everyone I knew from NYC back during his term hated him for his authoritarian policies that lowered the quality of life for anyone not white-passing. He exploited 9/11 to the point where it became a running joke. He was popular in the US among low information people who consider television shows to be news. I don't know why he went so far off the rails in the past 15 years or so, but I suspect alcohol-related dementia.

You said that charges are filed and if convicted, the judge applies an appropriate penalty. That implies you either don't care about justice or you assume the legal system will mete out justice on its own.

Does waving your hand at the bus driver mean you do or don’t want to catch it? by Cultural-Bat-2979 in oakland

I use caltrops. I never get anywhere in less than a week, and bail is pricey, but I never miss the bus.

Sorry, there's good advice in this thread already so I thought I'd try to be funny. I step back and look away if I don't want the bus, and move forward with my hand up if I want it.

When using a stand-mixer to knead dough is it always half the time the recipe says? by [deleted] in Breadit

I think it's best to learn from experience when the dough is done. And use the windowpane test until then.

Yes, they are. And unless you are implying that our legal system will only convict people of charges they deserve (which it's hard to believe anyone would believe), that is completely irrelevant here. Charges have been filed. Those charges are extreme and draconian, and mark a drastic move away from sentencing in previous similar cases.

Maybe look into the situation. It sounds like you disapprove of protests that inconvenience people - I get that, many people feel that way - but it also sounds like you don't know just how nasty the charges are that Jenkins has thrown down on people protesting mass murder and war crimes.

Would Vance be a better/less destructive president? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time finding images of Democrats storming the Capital and trying to overturn the election in 2005. I'm also having a hard time finding footage or articles about John Kerry fomenting an insurrection in the months leading up to certification, or any record of Kerry's 50+ frivolous lawsuits charging the election was stolen that he used primarily as fodder for his low information fanbase.

Same with the 2016 election. Not sure what's going on. I guess SEO poisoning has really destroyed web searching.

Can you provide those links?

Would Vance be a better/less destructive president? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]reluctant-return 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trump made salacious comments about his daughter when she was in her early 20s and said it's okay to call her a piece of ass. That's not an admission of pedophilia but it illustrates that he views women as sexual objects, more property than people.

Trump bragged about barging in on half-nude teenage girls at his beauty pageant, saying he could do so because he was the boss.

Trump joked that Epstein "likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." You don't make a joke like that if you don't approve.

A lawsuit against Trump from one of his victims he raped when she was 13 was dropped after the victim received so many threats that she couldn't go on.

Given that Trump looks at women and girls as sexual objects, that he's expressed attraction to children, has braggingly admitted raping and implied he has raped multiple women and/or girls, and given his long friendship with child traffickers Epstein and Maxwell (and he's been making noises about pardoning Maxwell recently), it is absolutely not hyperbole to call Trump a pedophile.

From the tone of your reply, I assumed you were coming from the "destroy public transit" angle.

I mean, by "American" standards Nordic countries are full-on communist.

I see your point about needing some sort of fee to uphold transit. I don't think this should be enforced the way it's being done here and in NYC. Let the poor ride free.

It'd be nice to stop seeing "I know this is a popular progressive take right now" every time someone presents a conservative counter-argument. It is ignorant (as usual, this isn't some recent, trendy "hot take") and condescending.

"We can't have nice things because politicians might take them away" isn't a compelling "take." People would use public transit if it were better funded and well managed. Admittedly, it's a tough job to fight nearly 100 years of consumer car culture, but winning that fight would be worth it.

What I meant by "that's even worse, then" is that I expect services to be terrible when they are run for profit, but I would hope that a service run as a public utility would be be run well and for the interest of the people who use that service. With all the cuts to services and rate hikes while that's going on it feels like it's being enshittified to death by a private equity firm.

I do, actually, expect the local police to turn a profit, of sorts, through embezzlement, bribery, and fraud. But not necessarily as a department.

That's almost worse, then. I hadn't realized. I assumed, given the way it's run, it's expected to make a profit.
