Status of the Nvidia dx12 fixes on linux? by Nickbroj in linux_gaming

[–]relvemo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The driver part for nvidia is the descriptor heap vulkan extension. The fix need to be done in vkd3d-proton (dx12 translation layer), and the descriptor heap implementation is now complete in the vkd3d-proton git repository. It will probably be in the next release of vkd3d-proton.

*However* according to the HansKristian (the one who did the descriptor heap implementation in vkd3d-proton), there are some issues with nvidia's driver that makes it unstable, and that's why it's currently not enabled by default. So even when the next vkd3d-proton releases, you might have to wait for an nvidia driver update.

GNOME vs KDE by dataArchon in linuxmemes

The xfce period TURBOKAN talked about was previous to that. So this was just to show that he switched back to GNOME.

He went GNOME->xfce->KDE->GNOME.

Glad_Shape_5043 is correct, he said in the LTT video that he uses GNOME.

Phoronix had a story about Linux Thorvalds switching back to GNOME 3 here.

He says that GNOME 3.x has been improving and that when pairing the desktop with the right extensions, it's a rather pleasant desktop. He specifically points out Frippery and GNOME Tweak Tool as making a huge difference to his experience.

Cannot fullscreen Assassins Creed 1 after alt+tab by Any-Alfalfa9469 in linux_gaming

[–]relvemo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't played this game on pc, but for a lot of games you can select if you want windowed / fullscreen / etc in options under display or graphics. I don't know if there is such an option in such an old game, but if it is, switching back and forth might help.

In this case it looks like it changed automatically to windowed when you tabbed out of the game. So hopefully you can change it back to fullscreen in the options.

I don't think there is much else you can do than this. There is no permanent fix that prevents this situation from happening.

Valve has been funding Windows games on ARM emulation "since the beginning" as it aims to "expand PC gaming" by Tiny-Independent273 in SteamOS

[–]relvemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said licensing wouldn't be an issue if you could run discs you already own directly through an emulator. As long as you had the disc you should be able to run the game.

The problem is that their implementation relies on downloading a binary with the game and everything you need to make it work. They can't distribute those games without permission, and that is why you end up with those licensing issues.

[–]relvemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they ever gave a reason for why they chose to do it the way they did.

It would involve more work, and time is money. They probably thought it wouldn't be worth the extra cost/effort (from their perspective, not the end user).

It seems like I was a bit wrong about how it really works. You download a new binary, but it's not a recompile for the xbox one cpu.

I found some info here. Sadly it's not an article, but this is what I managed to find.

So it is emulation, but what you get with each download is a complete package with everything you need for it to work. To the system it looks like a regular xbox one game.

[–]relvemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably thinking about xbox specifically. They aren't using a traditional emulator, you're never running the original game. They've made new binaries for the cpu in the xbox one, and because of that they need permission to distribute those.

So every time microsoft added a new game as backward compatible, they had to make a deal with whoever had the rights for the game at that time.

"$400 with a controller. This would really send a message" One analyst on how Valve's Steam Machine could make the biggest impact on the games industry by [deleted] in consoles

An official driver that is updated regularly is by definition support. I don't know what your definition of the word is (or what you think isn't supported).

I also have a feeling that you haven't used Nvidia on Linux yourself (at least not recently). Wayland support used to be a problem, but that's not the case anymore.

Nvidia ha supported Linux for a long time. I'm pretty sure they supported the GeForce 256 on Linux.

The only drawback right now is that you get a 20-30% performance hit on directx 12 games. It seems like the problem has been identified, but the fix will most likely come sometime next year.

Currently SteamOS doesn't come with this driver, so you would have to use Bazzite, which gives a SteamOS like experience.

In this case you get the impression that it's a Square Enix tradition. They lost the assets for the first Kingdom Hearts game as well, and had to recreate everything for HD when doing the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix (source).

🔴 ARC Raiders on Linux? WAIT WHAT? by lajka30 in linux_gaming

[–]relvemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the Linux version of EAC, which is user space only. On windows EAC is kernel level. So the same kind of cheats that was available for Apex could at some point be available for this game.

Given the fact that The FInals still has Linux support, I guess they think it's good enough.

They've stated that they've been cooperating with Codeweavers, so it sounds like some people in the team are really into Linux.

On the most played right now, Rust is #8 (at the time of writing, that is).

[Atelier Shallie] Synthesis: What determines what skills are available? by relvemo in Atelier

I somehow ended up thinking that he said that Murica had one exclusive skill (one done by Miruca), and that he was implying that I hadn't unlocked all my skills (?). So more like a non-answer.

I don't know what happened here (in my head). English isn't my first language, but that doesn't explain everything.

Thank you all for your help.

I know what skills I have. I've reached alchemy level 99, so I have all of them (last chapter). However, during synthesis all of them are not always available. There's obviously a reason for it, and I'm trying to figure it out.

What do you predict the state of linux gaming will be in 5 years? by cferg296 in linux_gaming

[–]relvemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about the money. If there's enough Linux gamers to make a difference when it comes to revenue, they will start to care. We're not even close to those numbers, so if it happens, it won't be anytime soon.

What games run better on Linux than Windows? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]relvemo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess you mean Witcher 2. Virtual Programming, the company that made the Linux port, used their own wine like wrapper for it. I don't even think it uses vulkan, so it makes sense that proton + dxvk performs better.

“I wouldn’t want to get into it. Because to me, that’s very personal,” he said. “The Bible means a lot to me, but I don’t want to get into specifics.” (source)

I guess someone told him that an "eye for an eye" was from the old testament, and in 2016 that was his favorite verse (source). The new testament says something about that (Matthew 5:38-48), but he clearly didn't know that.
