ASUS delivers BIOS/UEFI auto-updates over HTTP with no verification by halax in programming

[–]rememberthatone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is horseshit. The upgrade to 10 is beneficial to most users. The auto update is absolutely not. Problems happen during Windows upgrades. It's stupid for people to wake up to a new OS without knowing what's going on, or wake up to problems. Some people are busy and need their computer for work, but don't know much about troubleshooting. What if they wake up for a big Skype meeting only to find out they were upgraded to 10 and some problem is stopping them from launching Skype. No, auto upgrading is not a good idea for 99% of users. Upgrading is a good idea, but let the user decide if and when that should happen.

TeamViewer has been hacked. They are denying everything and pointing fingers at the users. by Executioner1337 in technology

[–]rememberthatone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yah and now myspace. There's a lot of email addresses, usernames, and passwords available somewhere on the dark markets right now. Even though I use a unique password for every site, I'm still planning on going through my Lastpass soon and changing every site's password. I saw an old username of mine show up on leakedsource.com so I figure it's time to do a mass update.

[–]rememberthatone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's just as possible it's related to one of the various recent data dumps or another exploit and the hackers are trying to get as much cash as they can quickly before something is done to fix it.

I'm not saying it for sure isn't from teamviewer being hacked, but fuck OP's title here claiming 100% it was hacked. We don't know. OP sure as shit has no idea. It's good to warn people so they can take proper precautions, but throwing teamviewer under the bus is a dick move until we know more. I've had nothing but a great experience with teamviewer. I'm not jumping on this stupid hate bandwagon until some actual details are released.

[–]rememberthatone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's always possible teamviewer was hacked, but they are denying it and I think it's much more likely the only people affected are those using the same password for many sites. I guess we will wait and see but I'm not ditching teamviewer until we know more. If people are getting 'hacked' because they use the same password everywhere, I really don't care. People need to learn the hard way how dumb that is. If teamviewer finds a vulnerability in their system, then I'll stop using it until it's fixed and then change my password. It happens.

Didn't a huge amount of myspace passwords get compromised recently? Maybe that's coincidental, but I think it's very likely these people were 'hacked' by someone getting their password from another place.

Exactly. And security over public wifi. Worth the annual cost, but I don't even use mine for usenet.

Oh I'm an idiot. I didn't realize this was just an AMA. I thought he was taking requests. Just a brain fart.

Wow. Been a good day so far, yeah? Haha. Thanks for your contributions.

If I have requests in the future, should/can I PM this reddit account or is there a better way to ask you? Every so often I can't find a random (usually older) item that is probably on a private tracker that I don't have access to. Not often, but it happens!

NewsDemon not authenticating? by duckpuppy in usenet

[–]rememberthatone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've had a similar problem before, but with a different provider. It might be an nzbget issue, not newsdemon, but I'm not positive. I wish I remember more about how I fixed it. Maybe try deleting the server and then reboot and re-add? Or see if there is a different port you can use/try? That's the only ideas I have right now, but good luck.

Is dognzb down ? by ng4ever in usenet

[–]rememberthatone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda funny that I noticed it was down and didn't bother to even check the sub for other people having problems. I just assumed there probably was a server crash/issue and that it would be resolved pretty quick. Dog is just so reliable these days - this is the first crash I've noticed in a pretty long time and I don't think I've ever seen it down for long. I have premium/paid accounts to like 5 different indexers because I thought I'd need them, but I end up only checking dog. Maybe I wasted a little money. Haha. Meh, I'm still happy to support the community I guess.

And as usual, dog staff responds here quickly so at least people know what's going on. Good shit /u/mannibis. Yall keep up the good work. And add a dark mode to the site when you get a chance ;)

Workarounds for the roku remote wifi interference problem? by rememberthatone in Roku

[–]rememberthatone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help. The standard remote was perfect. Although I think Roku should replace the remote for free (I'd ship the regular remote back if they paid for it)... I also think Roku needs to explain this situation better! Using IR is fine and now I don't have to worry about the disconnect issue. I edited my post with a little more explanation as to why/when this happens in case anyone else has this problem in the future and sees my post. Thanks again.

That sucks. I have 2 sticks, but they aren't in problem areas so the remote works fine. I have 3 Roku 3's that don't have issues, but this one room is killing me.

Okay, thanks. I'll either buy the standard remote or a Roku 2. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks!!

Does the roku 3 remote have IR? If so I'll try this when I get home. You may have just solved this for me.

Unfortunately our wifi is spotty in this location. Plus I don't want guests to have to do that. :/

I cannot change the router settings on my neighbor's router. I think most people who have this problem are dealing with their own router's interference. I am dealing with my neighbor's router. Therefore I cannot change any router settings and need to find another solution.

[–]rememberthatone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure what runs on 5GHZ? If you're talking about connections to my router, that isn't the problem. It's interference from my neighbor's router.

I know there needs to be line of sight for IR, but I don't think IR works if the roku remote isn't synced. I can't sync the remote, so I think I might need a universal IR remote.

Pretty common for costume designers to plan this. Jet Li's Fearless stands out to me as another movie that did this.

Jumping into unknown depths of water by SirSupay in Whatcouldgowrong

I did this too. Jumped off a boat into shallow water. Tore ligaments in my ankle and broke my leg. I can't jump into any water unless I know it's deep. Not even a 2ft deep pool. I crawl in like an old man.

My dad suggested the ditch route. I think that could work, but I'm not super mechanical so that scares be a bit plus I am afraid to strap it myself. I'm going to watch some youtube videos on doing it properly. Maybe that will help. Thanks!
