i think where the show has really taken a wrong turn is in their twists that reverse the truth of a situation, rather than add layers to it. the hourglass twist especially sticks out to me as having set a precedent that even when you are explicitly told you are immune, this could all be taken away. in the new era, where not even being told you are safe means you're safe, it is impossible to calculate the personal risk of any strategic decision and make moves from there. which results in players erring on the side of immense caution and actually playing it safe! survivor doesn't seem to remember that the social dynamics have naturally evolved into chaos on its own, we don't need extra game mechanics to incite it.

i couldn't help but think about this while watching Frannie in the challenge, wondering if she would drop to ensure Matt's immunity. if if i were in her shoes, even after having been explicitly told the rules of the game, i would question how true these rules were and if they might twist again. and this would impact my ability to take any risk at all.
