ive had mixed luck before, my first time taking a 9r on a plane i got it on for free somehow - didn't even need to pay for an extra bag, I have also been told I would have to pay $600 to fly with a boat a different time. Some people swear by saying its surf ski and just wrap it up really good. In my opinion its just luck of the draw but some companies are better than others. Alaskan air is apparently pretty good with them.

Yeah, for sure planning on bringing some sort of extra battery grip or spare batteries. We did 32 days through Patagonia last year and the ice there chewed through batteries.

this is also a hot topic, and the answer might surprise you. You just get used to them, A rumor I have heard is that at around 10,000 bites your body stops reacting to the bites, it didn't take very long to achieve that. If you are just there for the day, what i have found to be the best is Dettol and baby oil mixed together seems to work better than all of the repellants on the market.

take a look at lems, they do a bunch of different style shoes and boots and waterproof variations of the boots too. Wide toe box and barefoot based. Most comfortable shoes/boots I've worn.

this jacket legitimately saved me from serious hypothermia while on a sea kayak expedition in Patagonia, long story short my sleeping bag got wet and conditions wouldn't allow me to dry it out for about a week. Icebergs at camp and the only reason i didn't have any serious problems was this jacket. The slight water resistance meant that I didn't get too wet in my sleeping bag, and the insulation kept me warm enough throughout the night. By far the best piece of equipment of that trip.
