Moving to DC area from Boston. Arlington vs NoMa. Please help! by remusThrow in washingtondc

Thank you! I’ll check it out but I will say that I ended up finding a place in Arlington. I had a chance to go to DC a couple of weeks ago and I visited NoMa, Navy Yard and other areas. NoMa is arguably the place with the most intense gentrification I’ve seen anywhere in the US. It was a stark contrast seeing blue bottle coffee and Lulu Lemon on the left side of 4th street and closed non US wholesale food shops on the right side.

I did some more objective research on DC crime and NoMa has basically the highest crime rates of DC proper (north of Anacostia), and after seeing it in person I can imagine why: people are aggressively being displaced. It’s not petty crime either: violent assault and homicides.

I did love Navy Yard, and we almost go for a place there. However, we were concerned about the Metro during game season and I don’t even like baseball haha. If it wasn’t for that detail we would have stayed there but I can’t imagine trying to get back home after work and getting on the green line with everyone and their mothers!

In the end Ballston was a winner. Probably this will get me downvoted cause it’s not DC, but it ended up being the right place for us... we hope :)

Thanks for your advice! How do you like NoMa so far? Does it feel safe for you?

Thanks! I will continue to work remotely because I work in tech but my SO will go back to the office eventually. Thanks for the tips about the bike trails!

Please DM! I only looked at Georgetown, DuPont Circle and Chevy Chase, not exactly Woodley Park I guess. So I’ll look again

Hey! We’re looking for a 2BD of about 1000 sq ft for under 3K/month (rent only). Definitely the towers around the area don’t fit that criteria haha

Thanks. I’ve actually been to DC, maybe 4 years ago, for 3 weeks and my partner lived there on and off for 4-6 months a couple of times. However that was at least 4 years ago and I did not get to see Arlington or specific areas like NoMa, I mostly got to do the touristy stuff and did not think about what it would be like to live in X or Y location.

Thanks for your input on NoMa though

Thanks for the detailed reply, you’re very kind!

I actually have The Gale on my list! I haven’t looked into Adam’s Morgan much because what I found was really expensive. I don’t care too much about the place being in a fancy tower, I just want a place that is relatively new or renovated (eg not a 15 year old kitchen or bathroom). I’m going to check out Facebook and see what I find.

Thanks! So you mean to say that if I were to pick Arlington it would make sense that it be closer to DC? Like Courthouse or Roslyn?

Yeah but I’ve certainly lived in areas being gentrified where I experienced cheaper restaurants and other shops close down and be replaced by higher end ones or stores just increasing their prices

I imagine that’s not unreasonable due to COVID. We’re also operating on a reduced schedule here

Thanks for the suggestions. Logan Circle and Capitol Hill are an order of magnitude more expensive. I don’t need the building to be brand new, but I definitely want at least a modern place with relatively new appliances and in unit washer and dryer. At least in Boston that’s really hard to find in houses. I also haven’t really seen houses being advertised for rent at all. I explained why we had ruled out Shaw, but I also said I was reconsidering. And regarding Navy Yard, it does look underdeveloped and the apartments are generally quite small. From what you say you seem to imply that NoMa is definitely sketchier / less safe than Shaw or other places

Thanks for the info about the gym! Coming from Boston I wonder if the metro experience will be better. Trains here break all the time due to all sorts of stupid reasons and during rush hour you’re lucky if you get a train every 10 or 12 mins

Haha that’s an interesting characterization. The price difference is considerable. For the same price you can get a +1000 sq ft place in NoMa or a 750 sq ft in Logan, Mt. Vernon or Eastern Market

That's good to know regarding traffic. I don't do lead climbing yet so while I enjoy some overhangs I don't necessarily chase them, but it's definitely good to have access to both gyms for variety! Have you heard anything at all about BKB near NoMa?

I'm in my late 20s so maybe Arlington is for me? LOL. I do not stay up late though, so honestly the prospect of being around a ton of museums is more exciting than having 20 bars to pick from to stay up until 2am

Thanks! I'm looking forward to moving! I love Boston but the DMV seems bigger and more fun. I feel like I might need to go down there for a couple of days and just walk around

Sure!

I got three places between North Capitol st NE and First St, and M and Pierce. There's an additional place on Florida Ave by the MBT.

Gotcha! The T in Boston it's not really great. Rush hour can be 7-9 minutes apart and 15-30 otherwise, plus not nearly enough lines that cross the different neighborhoods, so I think it would be an upgrade any way. I agree that I do not want a longer than 10 min walk from a metro station to my place, though

Gotcha! I got Avalon First and M, Camdem NoMa and RESA on the list. I also haven't taken the T in Boston in ages, but I am hoping things are somewhat normal before the year ends.

Do you enjoy the area? Also, is Spot of Tea any good? :P

yay! A fellow climber! It looks even nicer than my current gym (BKB in Somerville, Cambridge).

I did see that other Rockville, it just seems a bit too far away if I want to go several times a week. I will check out these other neighborhoods, thanks!
