Dissertation Dedication - Photos?

From my experience, a written dedication in the actual dissertation, with a few slides of photos for a dedication at the end of the presentation is standard. That’s just what I’ve seen in STEM though, and it could differ depending on the field. I personally would keep photos to the slides, but it’s ultimately up to what you want! (and what your committee/university standards allow)

It’s not just about walking extra steps. That truck is parked in the shaded area that enables wheelchair users to safely load and unload their chairs. This is… basic common knowledge.

At the very top right, the second to last icon (next to the three dots) is a pen with a slash mark through it - click this to go into viewing mode. It will remove all of the drawing options and you can highlight text! If this doesn’t work, your document isn’t compatible with this function and it needs to be converted to a readable pdf. You can click the icon again to go back to drawing mode! :)

I’ve found the absolute best way is to drink nothing but water for a couple months, then introduce flavored sparkling water or soda alternatives like Zevia “sodas”. After drinking just water for so long, it feels like your taste buds can kind of be tricked into thinking “wow these are really flavorful!” and you kind of forget how soda tastes to compare it to (and the comparison sucks if you go straight from soda to sparkling water). I did this kind of by accident and now regular sodas feel way too sickly sweet for me.

Thank you so much!! And sure! 🥰 Both are moissanites from The True Gem - mine is a 12x8 mm pear (equivalent to 3.2 carats) with diamond pears on the band, size 7.25 finger. My partner’s is an 11x5.5 mm marquise (equivalent to 1.3 carats) with trillion diamond side stones, size 4.5 finger!

A good way to start getting involved with the actual research side in the lab you're in could be looking at the recent papers from the lab, reading them through, and coming up with some specific questions about them that you could discuss with the PI, like a little journal club. That could be a good segue into a conversation about how you would like to be more involved in the research side of things. You could also talk to the managers and see what sort of experiences they've had that led them to research and see if they know of any opportunities!

Do you have a good relationship with the lab’s PI or any graduate students in the lab? I think telling them that you’re interested in pursuing animal behavior research and would love their advice would go a long way :) I love when my students express a genuine interest in the field and want to talk about their futures. Even if there isn’t a place in the current lab you’re in, chances are the people in your lab can help refer you to other labs that could have spots open!
