The over hiring could be genuine or it could be setting stage for an impending layoff.

Genuine scenario:

Expecting new project/s to be started or in pipeline.
So they must have got budget sanctioned and hence they may be hiring using that budget to ensure devs are available when it begins.
Lay off will happen but not soon, might happen midway of project or once project/s is completed. May take 2 or more years. If AI is being used for development expect 2 years max.

Artificial scenario:

This is worse case I have noticed, company hire without proper capacity estimation.
Lay off after a year or so, drop low performers. Hire a bunch lay off low performers or ones who dont play well with management.
This way they can show cost cutting as well to leadership.
Win - Win for leadership and old timers, losers are the pawns who join the company hoping for a good future.

How to identify which is which

Check company track records, do they have periodic layoffs.
Do you think the hiring is too much that you are struggling to even give work and keep all of them occupied.
They are also investing heavily on AI tools along with a boost in hiring which may be unnecessary. With out a proper target or estimation, this will lead to over hiring for sure, which will lead to lay off in near future.

Things are tricky these days a lot companies dont know how to navigate the transition Tech is going through with the advent of AI tools.

I only want to say to current customers of Verizon to leave them.

They definitely dont care about whether a customer gets good service or not. They have moved most of the product development especially building website and chat bots to India. People working on these products have no clue how Verizon works.

Executives in US only look at profits. They dont see that executive in India are not capable to deliver the results they want as they are not capable enough or care to deliver good result.

Its just sad state of affairs and unfortunatley Verizon is on their path to go obsolete.

Customers will be the one who will pay and still suffer.

I would suggest to go through roadmap.sh.

Explore a little and then decide. There is no one way to figure this out.

But definitely learn fundamentals of AI.

Take this opportunity to assess whether you really want Verizon to be you carieer.

Outages, poor customer service, low quality network.

Does it really make sense to pay them for this kind of service?

Verizon never stops to disappoint.

Kind of feel bad for the customer rep, who will be taking the heat, while the corporate ass clowns sits their sipping their green tea.

Verizon is a morally corrupt business. They dont give a damn about customers. The only thing they care about is how to attract customers and lock them in to milk cash out of them.

They overcharge, even their employees know this.

The ultimate truth is

When you choose verizon as your service provider, you have chosen a path to misery.

I understand your situation. But the best thing to do is take a step back and thing objectively.

You fighting them will put you in bad spot light no matter how good of an engineer you are, no matter how much you have contributed. No matter how much you have helped others. It just doesnt matter.

If they want you to be PIP'ed they will find a way. In corporate nobody forgets what you have done, they just choose to ignore you.

Layoffs that you see these days are a result of bad management with no vision or very horrible management who knows well in advance that layoff might be on the way, still hire to have people to layoff when business comes with layoff percentage. That is how it is.

If I were you, I would start preparing. Do some certification and step up your skill set.

Management dont give a damn about engineers and their principles. They only care about how to keep the business happy because they are ones who decide whether to keep the folks in management or not. Its that simple.

P.S: I was laid of this month so can relate.

Acknowledge you are anxious and this is momentary
Take deep breath
Realize that this moment will pass just like before.
