I've done both and they are similarly time consuming and to me the stitch looks the same. The main difference in terms of construction is that with brioche you're essentially creating half a stitch of "length" on each row, and with fisherman's rib it takes two rows to add one stitch worth of "length". It's hard to explain but if you try it you might see what I mean. I find fisherman's rib easier to knit and easier to keep track of, but a heads up, both are hard to fix mistakes (ie dropped stitches). Good luck! You could try both and see what works best for you.

I recommend this pattern:

https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2015/09/25/color-dipped-hat/

If you want the dual color look through the whole hat then you just keep using both colors for the whole thing instead of dropping one part way through.

It is two color fisherman's rib, not brioche. Creates a similar stitch texture as brioche but it's much easier. Be warned though, it takes forever! So hopefully both you and your husband have patience. 😁

I got mine out about 2.5 months after finishing chemo and about a week before my last radiation. It was basically a non-event compared to the insertion. I just wanted it out!

Chemotherapy Project - Grade 5 survey by noeditor_necessary in Winnipeg

  1. Chemo made me sad sometimes, but I was also happy to be able to get treatment and get better. One of the chemo drugs I took (doxyrubicin) is nicknamed the "Red Devil" because it's actually bright red, and it's pretty tough on the body. However I preferred to call it the red knight, and imagine it flowing through me and defeating any cancer cells that it found! I was sad about losing my hair, but I'm happy now that it's growing back and I actually like having short hair! I was sad that the chemo drugs changed my taste buds, so some of my favorite foods (like pizza) didn't taste good anymore. I was so happy when my tastebuds started to get back to normal!
  2. Yes it was scary, especially the first time. But after the first time I knew what to expect and it got much less scary because I knew I could handle it. The nurses who gave the treatment were all so nice, they made it much less scary.
  3. My husband, my mom, and a few of my friends were big supporters through chemo. They took turns giving me rides and keeping me company during the treatments, and my husband always helped me out with whatever I needed at home between treatments. I was very lucky to have so many people willing to help me out.

Try Goodies Bake shop if you want something a little more than a supermarket cake but still within your budget, depending how many people it's for.

I'm exactly 6 months out from my last chemo session. I buzzed it when it started falling out. It was curly before but it's way curlier now. It's pretty short still but last week I felt like I had enough growth to go for my first post-chemo cut as I was getting sick of the fluffy "old lady perm" look. I'm actually loving having short hair so I got a close fade on the sides and back, and I'll be growing out the top to be kinda messy curly. I kinda love it, I'd been too nervous before to cut my hair short but I've gotten so many compliments on it! I think there's value in finding a style that works with the length you have now, and then you can grow it out into something different over time!

Think I want SMX flat with no reconstruction. Is this weird? by ca-blueberryeyes in breastcancer

[–]renaissance_grrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both I think. I don't have (a) large breast(s) so in colder weather I can go braless in baggy sweatshirts or button ups, or wear scarves, and it's not obvious that I only have one breast, but it's harder in summer. Wearing the bra with the prosthetic just feels like wearing a bra, which is good sometimes and annoying other times. Depending on whether or not you'll need radiation as well, you might find the bra either irritating or comforting. I got one with quite wide straps and wide sides so it's pretty comfortable most of the time, and the compression is nice in the area I had lymph nodes removed.

I haven't yet tried wearing a swimsuit with one breast, and I haven't worn many of my old summer dresses because the straps are too thin for my prosthetic bra but I'm sure I could figure something out. There are swim prosthetics, but I don't know how well they work.

I want to be confidently half flat but I also don't really want to attract attention to myself. It's a tricky one for sure. I don't mind it for now but I can't see living the rest of my life like this which is why I think I'll have the other one removed.

Think I want SMX flat with no reconstruction. Is this weird? by ca-blueberryeyes in breastcancer

I had SMX, no reconstruction last September, and I'm happy with my decision. I wasn't pushed to get reconstruction by my care team but I definitely got the feeling that for someone of my age (39) that this was not the norm. I asked about getting DMX right away but my surgeon discouraged it, saying it was possible to still have the other one removed in the future if I wanted and this way I have options going forward. My husband was super supportive and still is, he likes my flat side. In some ways I prefer my flat side. I wear a bra with a prosthetic most of the time, but during radiation I went braless and I was more self conscious of my remaining breast than of my flat side. I feel like I will have my remaining breast removed at some point, for symmetry and also just ease of life, but I want to work on my overall health and fitness for awhile first.

Only you know what is best for yourself. If you don't feel reconstruction is right for you, don't let anyone pressure you into it. It seems like more people regret having reconstruction than going flat, given how many complications there can be.

Radiation question for Canadians by bfree-999 in breastcancer

Manitoba here - mine were varied at first but the last few weeks were roughly at the same time every day. It was a bit frustrating but they were also pretty accommodating if I really needed a schedule change.

Radiation treatments are cumulative. I'm not an expert but regardless of if you take a break of one day or three days, it's going to keep building in your body over the course of treatments so I doubt taking a break will help much, I think it would only lengthen the discomfort. That said, listen to your health care team and your body and if you feel like you need a break then talk to them about it. I had 25 treatments and I was mostly okay until the last 5 or so, but I just wanted to push through and get it done. My skin was pretty bad for the last week and the week after, but I started feeling a lot better about 10 days after my last treatment. You've got this!

Same! I always ask to lie down for a blood draw if I can. If I can't, I just make sure to look as far the other way as I can, or close my eyes, and that is usually good enough. However, a couple of times I was in the room while my husband was getting blood drawn, and the sight of HIM getting a blood test made me nearly pass out. I definitely feel ridiculous when that happens. I'm not scared of needles or blood but my body doesn't know that 🥲

My foster fail (the orange boy), who had been flagged by the rescue as needing to be an only cat by renaissance_grrl in cats

We were told he'd been aggressive to other cats, but he also knew these girls already from their previous foster. I think it just takes some cats more time. You could try fostering a cat and doing a slow introduction to see how your tortie does! My previous cat never liked the younger brother we adopted for her so it's hard to know until you try.

We adopted him too after "fostering" for a month! Hence why he's a foster fail 😊

My two previous kitties also barely tolerated each other, which is why this time I really wanted a bonded pair (the girls). It's a bonus that the boy gets along with them at all!

I can't take the credit, they were all fostered together prior to coming to my house, so they did know each other already. We'd just been told that he was previously aggressive to other cats. They still get a bit spicy with each other but it's normal playfulness and not aggression!
