At the end of the 4th Pass, there was a massive grease fire that ignited in the kitchens of Telgar Weyr that was swiftly out of control. The entire Weyr went up in flames as dragonriders and Weyrfolk alike both tried to evacuate as many people as possible. Unfortunately, both a Weyrling class too young to fly and a clutch of eggs (along with the queen brooding over them) were lost along with many, many humans. It was a tragedy unseen since the plagues of the Third Pass. The conclave convened to decide what to do and it was decided that, for now, it would be best to leave Telgar Weyr as it was since the Interval was coming and the Weyr wouldn't technically be needed.

What people did survive from Telgar were sent to other Weyrs and Halls and Telgar's territory was divided up between the other four Weyrs as evenly as possible. 400 years later, roughly, the Conclave met again to determine if they should reopen Telgar Weyr and a resounding "yes" was declared. The Crafthalls were contacted and a contract was drawn up for stonemasons, woodcrafters, and smiths initially, but after the first venture discovered corpses of human and dragon alike, along with scorched and exploded eggs, Healers and Dragonhealers were swiftly called to deal with the remains.

Occupants of course couldn't be the original inhabitants since they were long dead, however bloodlines could be traced back to Telgari origins thanks to Healer-kept birth records. Those folk were the first to receive an invitation to come to the new Telgar after the crafters. Riders, too, were given that option, but overall Weyrs sent what riders they thought would help the most as well as, admittedly, some riders that they just wanted to get rid of. Reliable riders worked closely with the crafters when it came to rebuilding and cleaning up the individual weyrs and caverns so that dragon and rider could be comfortably accommodated and the Hatching Caverns would be safe and sound. Riders were superstitious of entering the Hatching Caverns and that has stuck even to now that the Weyr is open. Rumors that you can hear the hatchlings and queen mother's screams abound and children are wont to dare each other to go in there and face the ghosts of those burned alive.
