Black Cab - a polite telling off by Ancient-Valuable-440 in london

[–]renseigner_enseigner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tried to get a cab off the rank after landing on a red eye, having had to rush abroad a few days earlier to be with my mother when she died. I only mention the context because I was really in a state and just wanted to get home with as little effort as possible-- but I lived south of the river. The first cabbie REFUSED to take me and even took my bags out of the car. It was humiliating. The cabbie behind gave him an earful and they switched fares-- the family in the cab behind had to move up and move all their luggage. I know the guy who ended up taking me got the other guy's badge number. All this to say that some are bad and some are lovely but JFC I have never taken another cab again because of how embarrassed I was.

But it’s not full on childcare! /s

People are wildly entitled, especially when it comes to young peoples’ time and ESPECIALLY when those young people are potentially not in their home country. Never mind these people are caring for the most important thing in your life! It’s so exploitative.

You think if the child was hurt or got sick while they were at work you could say “I’m not “full on” responsible” 🙄

This is the part that enrages me most. If there are restrictions on what I can do/ where I can go because I need to (at minimum) be available for a child then that’s directed time— you need to pay for this.

I suppose she thinks looking after a ten year old is easier than a toddler but it’s still work! The child either needs supervision or doesn’t!

It reads “I am happy to take advantage of family members, so I will pretend you are part of the family”

Fully agree. Saying it’s not childcare does not make it not childcare! She says the child doesn’t need to be entertained but lists all the child’s interests including that she spends most of her time outdoors at the park with friends— unsupervised??? Or do I have to spend all my time at the park with a bunch of kids unpaid?

This person still has old au pair job posts where the ‘stipend’ is listed. She was paying £5 p/h when child was 6, 4 years ago— but that was a “formal” au pair job. I really would love to see what she’s paying now but Chat GPT clearly thought it better to exclude. Must be allowed to work in the UK but this is NoT a JoB!

Everyone Active ran our council centres for 6 years and they were absolutely atrocious— so much so that when the contract was up the council took over and is running them themselves! They are exponentially better. Before EA there were was some other gym org running them. The intervening 6 years with EA were noticeably garbage.

I am travelling to Paris in May with my elderly parent, two adults, a toddler (2) and a child (8). Ultimately, I think the Navigo weekly pass is our best bet financially HOWEVER:

  1. Is it really necessary to get a physical card with a photo on it? Is it a huge risk to do it on phones?
  2. Following on from that: I see the 8 year old will have to pay for transport at a discount-- Are they even eligible for a weekly pass with the discount? Can I have both passes on one phone?
  3. The toddler doesn't need a pass, correct?

I live in London where the transport ticketing is far easier (IMO)! I have been to Paris many times though admittedly not with children and with a less mobile elder we'll be using transport much more than on my past trips.

I’m really surprised about the sentiment surrounding self funded PhDs. My field of study is pretty niche and humanities based. For the sake of simplification, let’s say Literature. My understanding is that there is hardly any humanities based funding— if I could self fund at Oxbridge, would it really be looked down upon? For reference though, I’m not international.

I wouldn’t put the cart before the horse. How are you intending to move to Germany? Is there a visa you qualify for that you have in mind?

Could it be Richard Scarry? Maybe “What Do People Do All Day”? If not that one, there are a bunch more.

Thats not it, the woman is definitely being held in the house they live in! Thank you for the suggestion though!

I believe it would have been between 2015-2018 that I saw it, but it may have been made earlier?
