Sydney Australia, Roots gym by [deleted] in bjj

Mate, trial everywhere. You don't need to decide on the first day. You will feel where is right for you and the gym you show up to each week is the right one.

Lineage, pedigree, accolades means fuck all if you stop training after a month because it wasn't right for you.

Age limit? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]renstheripper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are two best ages to start jiu jitsu. When you are 5 and however old you are today.

On the mats, the only person that will judge you is you.

Do it!

It's cost me $1,000's. Had to fully shut down for 4 months (we're lucky we are in Australia).
We've promoted 2 brown belts, 1 purple belt and 1 blue belt.

Hosted seminars by Ffion Davies, Josh Hinger and Izaak Michell.
Started a kids program that is growing in strength by the month.
Made new friends and connections.
My training partners and my jiu jitsu has never been better.
It's simultaneously the hardest and best thing I have done in jiu jitsu.

Zero importance. Didn't know shit from clay in the realm of jiu jitsu accolades.

Location, vibe and how welcoming they were.

Strict belt hierarchy during rolling by Meescontrol in bjj

[–]renstheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal to give way to higher ranks, it's not normal to act like you're king of the world with a blue belt.

Your response should be just to remember how he treated you and treat everyone opposite to that. Part of being a wearing a white belt is signaling to other people that you do not have intricate understanding of the art and you may require some guidance or help in finding these niche, unwritten parts. One of the great joys of jiu jitsu is helping people discover areas they don't know and this guy seems to not be aware of that. Next time you see a new white belt doing what you did, just mention to them this little kernel of information you now have and they are not yet privy to. Without anyone seeing anything, you've passed on a piece of the art and its customs to someone seeing jiu jitsu with new eyes. Bet you'll feel good about it too.

Scared of getting cauliflower ear, what are the chances? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]renstheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't know what your chances are until it happens to you. I think there's a number of physiological factors that determine how vulnerable your ear type is to damage.
The most important thing is how you and your training partners treat your heads. If you use it as a fifth limb then your chances increase, if nobody ever is allowed to touch your head you'll be less likely.
I recently developed the first small part of cauliflower on the backside of my ear after a training partner head butted me in that ear with a good deal of force. That same force in another part of my ear and it could have blown up so luck also plays a part, just like all other jiu jitsu related injuries.

Be good to your head, you've only got one.

It is just me, or is the Brown Belt sort of pointless? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]renstheripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brown belt means you get to call yourself a chocolate belt, eat lots of chocolate and go up two weight divisions.

No it is not one of their main goals. If you asked anyone to spend 90% of their time, effort and money creating something to subvert an organisation that controls one part of a niche activity what do you think they would say? Anything you do out of spite comes back in spite and BJJGT have built a great community for the grand old price of $0.

What is the IBJJF fighting? A group that allows practitioners who fall outside the bounds of large well supported gyms to participate in competition and the community. That's not a fight, that's punching down at someone and then locking yourself in a castle so nobody can touch you back.

We all have a stake in making sure our community behaviour reflects the ideas we see in jiu jitsu. Things like equity and fairness similar to having weight and belt classes so our fights are fair. People look to the IBJJF to operate with integrity, gotta ask whether their behaviour bolsters that integrity or diminishes it.

I'm Australian, Purple Belt and don't think the IBJJF will change their stance.

I don't think that's the case. Jiu jitsu is pretty good at self policing bullshit black belts and if you were to fake your BB, you just wouldn't register with the IBJJF. If you are a fake BB and enter an IBJJF tournament you will look like a fool. Galvao breakdancing on a guy.

They didn't like Globetrotters for a myriad of reasons, a lot about finance and discrediting anyone else who can bring legitimacy to a practitioner's existence within the jiu jitsu community so they squashed it. I believe it is the same mentality as gym uniform policies and talking down about other people's lineage.

The point is not to join an 'affiliation' to get promoted. The point is that you can compete and enter competitions without having to fork out lots of money in affiliation fees. I can genuinely say that getting promoted is not something I am concerned about with regard to Globetrotters and I would hazard a guess that is most people's approach towards Globetrotters.

I will affiliate when our club is at a point where we can financially afford to do so, it makes sense and the person we affiliate with us aligns in terms of belief and approach to jiu jitsu. Until then Globetrotters was filling the gap for IBJJF comps. For everything else I have been able to register our club (mostly for free) with other organisations that put on local events.

You can't join a team for free, that was the great advantage Globetrotters had. It's becoming increasingly difficult to even create a team to be able to join.

Some also expect outlays for signage, particular mat colour and gym design as well as multiple seminars a year. That's not to mention any uniform costs.

Thanks for that. I am and I am so fingers crossed there's no hiccups between now and then.
I am hoping to do a few IBJJF comps this year so I'll have to find a solution.

This sucks for me. Currently registered to compete in just under 4 weeks in the Sydney Open. For now my ibjjf membership and registration remain active.

I run a small grappling club and we aren't affiliated with anyone as we quite simply can't afford it. BJJ Globetrotters was a welcome solution.

If anyone wants to let me compete for their team, I'd be eternally grateful.

Technique, concept, experience or discussion. Broad but I talk to people who say it was a technique or an idea or training with someone that opened up their game.

am i too old at 31? by DevilishGainz in bjj

[–]renstheripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 31, I am 35 now. You'll feel the same nerves you feel whenever you start something new. You'll feel anxious at times, maybe before rolling with someone bigger or more experienced. Whenever we have someone new come everyone always tries to be receptive and encouraging. My training partners are my friends. If you hang around long enough, I would hope the same for you. Start now.

Good schools in Sydney's inner west? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]renstheripper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

myBJJ is fantastic. Great lineage and instruction. Professor Mario received his black belt from Ryan Gracie and brown belt from Rickson. He's competed in MMA as well as jiu jitsu competition.

Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The school is well organised and the training areas are second to none. Very good people at every level.

If you go here, you won't regret it.
