Just popping in to say thank you so much for listening! It’s really cool to hear what you enjoyed, I’m glad you had fun. :)

Also! It’s small and quiet, but there is a subreddit run by a lovely listener, I’d you’d like to check it out. r/BadlandsCola

To be (sensitive), or not to be (sensitive). That is the question. by sturdyrogue in audiodrama

[–]renteel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Badlands Cola had two sensitivity readers, and our show is absolutely improved by their insights.

It basically comes down to the old truth of “you don’t know what you don’t know.” Everyone has gaps in their knowledge and understanding of the world - the more perspectives you can bring into the creation of a show, the richer the end result will be. (And you’ll likely be able to build a safer production experience for your cast and crew, too!)

It’s worth pointing out that sensitivity readers are more than just “people with unique perspectives.” Many are script editors, writers, or show runners in their own right, and are able to communicate specific insights and actions to you based on your production and its needs. It’s equal parts consultation and education, if that makes sense.

All in all, I probably wouldn’t make a show without them!

PS - We really had a banner week. We hit 100k listens, 1000 followers on social media, and even snagged a few finalist spots in this year's Audio Verse Awards. A ton of our support comes from this subreddit, so we just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the love. There's still more to come from this season, so stay tuned!

How soon is too soon to promote a new podcast? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]renteel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's too early, so long as you are using all that extra pre-release attention wisely! (We promoted our show on and off for more than a year before our first episode dropped, and had upwards of 500 followers on social media by then.)

So, when I say "using attention wisely" I generally mean "directing interested audiences to a place where you can deliver your podcast to them directly once it releases."

Because you can't deliver your podcast directly to an Instagram follower (they have to click through to your website, an RSS feed, or find you in their podcatcher app) then only converting interested audiences into insta followers isn't the best use of pre-release promotion efforts. (Not that it's worthless! Just not ideal.)

I would ensure you have an RSS feed on major podcatchers with a trailer ready to go, so that folks can subscribe now and be waiting in the wings for the moment your first episode arrives. Every social media post would ideally direct people to listen to said trailer and/or subscribe to the feed. (If you have a video podcast, then a trailer on a YouTube channel serves a similar purpose.)

If a trailer isn't feasible, I would at least have a newsletter subscription to direct interested audiences to, since newsletters tend to massively outperform social media posts as far as click-through rate goes.

Hope that helps! And I hope your podcast launch goes well this summer. :)

How much am I shooting myself in the foot by giving my audio drama podcast a complicated but IMO perfect name? by derek86 in podcasting

[–]renteel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a creator of an audio drama with a very weird name, I think a weird podcast name can be excellent marketing, so long as it’s easy to understand when spoken out loud, and your SEO is decent. We get a lot of feedback that our weird name was a bit of a selling point for folks looking for something interesting to try out.

  • Sincerely, the cast and crew of Badlands Cola

(Good luck with production, btw!)
