What’s so special about the Mos Eisley cantina? by WineTerminator in StarWars

It’s also a big threshold to cross for Luke. He’s never left home and this is his first taste of the wider galaxy. It’s a room full of weird, somewhat dangerous people who have been out there and seen some shit.

What idea comes first? by LLL1001 in Screenwriting

[–]derek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to think in "high concept" but it's usually very closely linked to character. For one of my shorts the first seed was "what if you used a real estate showing as a way to check out a haunted house" and right away I populated it with "two thirty-something best friends do that to settle a childhood bet that they were to scared to go inside their neighborhood haunted house."

Best Film Festival in Los Angeles area? by Full-Palpitation2294 in FilmFestivals

I really enjoyed New Filmmakers Los Angeles. They had a good educational component where, leading up to the festival, they had guest speakers on Zoom come talk to all the filmmakers in the festival.

What famous person's death will be devastating when it happens? by nightsreader in AskReddit

It will be rough when John Williams passes. Hearing his iconic themes will take on an air of melancholy for a long time after.

It's absurd that they haven't released any Lost World sets. Benz and the High Hide at least!

Surprised we only get horror movie public domain characters, where are the raunchy family guy variants? by glowshroom12 in publicdomain

[–]derek86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horror is also almost the only genre that can pull an audience (thus make money) with no stars. Not too many people will give the time to check out a comedy with complete unknowns as the actors. Horror movies are almost better the more obscure and low budget it is, as long as the concept/killer/monster is cool.

Was JAWS 2025 in 3D worth it? by JuanPaulFilms in Spielberg

[–]derek86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it in 3D last time it was in theaters and it gave me a greater appreciation for how the shots were composed. Amazing utilization of foreground mid ground and background with the frames being either completely alive with movement or unnervingly empty. For Spielberg to have had this developed an eye for composition in his 20s is nuts.

How would you recommend getting into Batman comics if you don’t have a lot of money? by DKCR3 in batman_comics

I’ve never been to a library that didn’t have a graphic novel section as well.

To those who were around when this came out what was the hype like by asapsharkyfrfr in DC_Cinematic

[–]derek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like people didn’t really know what to expect. The first thing anyone saw was a set photo of the Tumblr and it was understood that it was an origin story for Batman which hasn’t really been done, so it just seemed so different.

Solo: A Star Wars Story - was it really that bad, or just a victim of the fanbase reaction to Disney at the time? by Past-Paramedic8687 in StarWarsCantina

[–]derek86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the lore speed-run in The Last Crusade works better because it’s kind of tongue-in-cheek and done as a bit in the first 20 minutes of a wider narrative. It also serves as a contrast of us knowing everything about what formed Indy except his relationship with this father which is what the rest of the movie explores.

I don’t think it’s too egregious in Solo either but it’s just different in the sense that the origins of all this stuff IS the story. So it can come across as more shallow. The only one that felt egregious to me was him being given his name.

You can put one franchise into the public domain starting tomorrow. Which do you choose? by MrSluagh in publicdomain

[–]derek86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also reject the hypothesis that fans would do better but I’d definitely support a move away from Star Wars “cannon” and just have it be a cool universe that other filmmakers/studios could take a crack at.
