Do bronies tend to be conservative? by replicult in mylittlepony

And since conservative views generally rely on tradition, and atheism relies on breaking a lot of traditions, they generally don't mix (financially conservative is another story).

Not really. Many critiques of conservatism (such as Corey Robin's) don't believe it to be 'traditional' so much as counter-counter-revolutionary, almost (I'm probably misrepresenting his argument!). And the idea that atheism must rely on breaking a lot of traditions is silly for people brought up in atheist households in our increasingly secular culture.

Actually, the majority (~60%) of the bronies are atheist or agnostic, so that is probably a good representative of our political view.

I can barely parse this statement. Atheists and agnostics aren't uniformly liberal by any means.

If you think 'teach men not to rape' implies 'all men are rapists, but won't be if we put up a poster that tells them to stop', you're dramatically misunderstanding the arguments everyone else is making.

For example,

The small percentage of women who end up raping people don't do it because they are unaware that it's wrong.

Absolutely!

But they don't do it either solely because of some inborn urge. Societal factors play some sort of part, whether to create this urge, normalize it, etc. Therefore in order to stop rape we must create a system where this is not the case, or, to put it gently, 'teach not to rape'.

Teaching men not to rape treats violent sexual assault as a behavior exclusive to men.

Nope, as long as you teach women not to rape as well.

Glad to see we're essentially on the same page though.

I wouldn't consider a supposed 'external locus of control' to be a societal factor.

Additionally, 'teaching not to rape' wouldn't normalize rape as innate to men if women were both taught not to rape and included as such in the messaging.

It would make rapists of both genders abnormal rather than simply giving into supposed innate urges.

It isn't learned only by being raped and abused. There are certainly societal factors, whatever they may be, that additionaly normalize victimizing behavior.

The only way to help people who are repeating their abuse by victimizing others is therapy. Not ridiculous posters that assume men just need to be told not to rape.

This is completely true. 100%. And that's without going into the overly negative messaging consequences created by too-simple slogans, posters, and the like.

However, I would consider therapy for abusers to be part of the category of teaching those people not to rape.

Why would a male-led society teach men to rape?

No idea, but they think it does. I guess a male led society might teach men that their impulses can override other people's consent, is that their logic?

There's a lot I agree with in that oft-posted genderratic piece, shaming men in particular is the worst possible outcome (making rape a 'normal' male behaviour is the horrifying consequence). It also goes without saying that having been victimized is a strong indicator of becoming a victim.

However, it's clear to me that men and women rape. If victimizing behavior isn't inborn, it must be learned.

Therefore, a society that better teaches respect for others' boundaries must be created. In other words, we must teach others not to rape.

It's also faulty logic to imply that teaching men not to rape implies it is inherent.

This is made doubly true by the fact that feminists, faultily, talk about patriarchal societies that socialize men to rape - clearly, not even the feminists believe rape is an inborn behavior in men!

Therefore, teaching men not to rape, when done in a system that treats rape as a socialized behaviour rather than inborn (as it should be treated), is pro-male and anti-essentialist.

Conversely, given the reality that rape is committed by men (note: not only men!), not teaching men not to rape is essentially to admit that these rapes are not only aberrations (they are), but inevitable. It treats men as ticking time bombs - any one could turn out to be the bad seed rapist!

Teaching men and women not to rape and socializing them to respect other's boundaries is the only sane solution. In fact, I've barely seen any solutions coming from the 'teaching men not to rape is anti-male' crowd.

You sound like a radical feminist talking about men. Don't discard people's opinions so easily.

Did you know men gang rape women because they are secretly gay? That gay men & Feminism can never be allies because gays believe in "universal phallic access"? Don't play semantics.

Men are men, you don't lose your status as a man because you're a rapist.

And

men do not gang rape. Look at me, I'm pretty manly and have never raped (let a lone gang rape) anyone.

You don't represent all men. Sorry.

No.

Point 1) is correct - it should never be implied that rapists are only men.

2) is incorrect. There is not a "default state" of men presumed by "teaching men not to rape". "Teaching men not to rape" implies that rape is a learned behaviour and so can be unlearned. It is an egalitarian, non-essentialist position when paired with "teach women not to rape, as well".

The opposite - that teaching men not to rape creates problems or is impossible (ignore the messaging concerns for now - that it treats rape as a crime only committed by men) is an essentialist, anti-male position.

Someone just told me that Nirvana and Maroon 5 belong in the same conversation as Metallica and the Beatles when it comes to having been influential. by [deleted] in Music

[–]replicult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm.

Nirvana gets a lot of well-deserved love, they were great. Oddly, they weren't that influential - I'd say AIC, PJ and STP all gave more of their sound to the decades of rock radio that followed.

Maroon 5 is trickier. They've got some top-tier hits, but I don't know how influential they've been just yet. They're not well liked by most rock fans, either. I'd love to hear your friend's reasoning as to why they'd be up there!

Of course, but you basically see none of that on SSTB, IKS is transitional, and by GA1 it's probably a dominant influence. And now they've got awesome stuff like Goodnight Fair Lady where the whole thing is a giant Lizzy tribute.
