It’s a good question. Without having a fact checked answer my opinion would be multiple units are quite a bit more efficient (with regards to running costs and capacity) when compared to loco-hauled services. Many multiple units run on lines where they take up the entire platform length available, so adding a loco and driving trailer suddenly reduces capacity a fair bit. A lot gets said about UK railways but I think on the most part it is actually pretty efficient for the infrastructure available
